Car is Located in South Lake Tahoe, California, .

Vehicle Description

1956 Chrysler 300B Historic Stock Car
Painfully restored by Bob Lutz former President of Chrysler and Jack Boxstrom, Canadian racing legend. The Beautiful Brute is a tribrute to a NASCAR racing legend that can be driven at any major historic racing event or rally. Currently races with HMSA, CSRG, General Racing, and any FIA event.

This 300B has undergone a no expense spared restoration. It has been faithfully refurbished to the design specifications which were inspired by the Carl Keikhaefer's NASCAR dominating 300B's which won 21 of the first 25 races they entered, setting a record of 16 straight wins.

The Legend Continues
In keeping with the NASCAR theme, the 354 CID Hemi engine, steering and suspension are all maintained from the original road racing setup. Period correct update include a 4 speed transmission and aluminum Buick finned drums on all corners. Safety upgrades are fire system, roll cage and fuel cell. Included are the original dual four barrel carburators and EXTREMELY RARE "BATWING" air cleaner.

The Beautiful Brute has been fitted with it's 1956 NASCAR Record Flying Mile Livery.

"ONLY 1102 of these cars were ever built; 116 remain accounted for."

One little glitch in that resto - it's Carl not Karl - see the rear fender... I'm a vintage outboard nut too, and restore vintage '50s Mercs, which was what Carl was actually most famous for, he owned all the outboard racing titles at the time, along with Nascar, until he quit...

"PAINFULLY" restored?

I wonder if the seller meant to say :"painstakingly"?

MY car was 'painfully' restored, though.

And, why would the dual carb (300) aircleaner be "extremely rare" (on/for a 300?)

You want "rare"---go find a 56 Dodge dual 4-bbl air cleaner!!

And, I wonder what kind/brand of "updated" period-correct floor mounted 4-speed tranmission
the car might have?

--just checked Ron Mog's "Miscellaneous For Sale" posting (on page 2 of that Board),
and he's got three bat-wing aircleaners, lying around his workshop.

No lie, Neil - Describe it for what it is (updated racer), not try to hype it up as a perfectly preserved time capsule of a racer.

The thing initially had window vents and original bench & back seats (see 3rd picture above).

Painfully restored my ass.....

The beaucoups dollares hype is what is painful.

Hoosiers were real popular in the 50's, weren't they ?

And the Confederate Army held air superiority at Bull Run.

Nice car, maybe ?

Can we lose the hype ?

Sure, it's a decent car, Doc - My beef is with the inaccurate description.

That seems like a huge oversight. Any chance the original was painted that way? They did spell "Carl" correctly in the description.

Hey: the seller posted a "correction" to his listing, saying that the car's owner was :" Karl Kiekaefer" ! (guess that
he looked at the quarter panel spelling!)

That should clear up any confusion, regarding the general knowledge about the car, by the seller.

I googled both Carl Kiekhaefer and Karl Kiekhaefer and it turns out that the spelling is used about 50/50. I tend to think the original car did have "Karl." I mean it would be like making a #3 replica and putting Dayle Earnhardt on it.

The article, in addition to spelling Carl's name, Carl, also features a juxtaposed photo, with Big Bill (France), and has a photo caption
with "Carl Kiekaefer" appearing underneath his photo.

Here is a website that uses both spellings on the same page:

http://fireballrobertsm1.com/p_4.html

Even the last name is spelled different!

And it is spelled Karl in this article:

I took these two photos at the 2002 Amelia Island Concour d'Elegance. Note the car in question doesn't look too prepared for actual racing. The sign in the rear view of the 300 is spelled 'Carl'.. FWIW...

Well. there is NO debate on this issue, no 50/50 - his was born "Elmer Carl Kiekhaefer" on June 6 1906, which is a matter of record. He actually went by "Elmer" until he was well into his 30s and started to become well known, when he began to insist on being addressed as "Carl", for obvious reasons.

He was a driven, dictatorial mechanical genius who made the most advanced outboards of the day, and was equally famous for his fits of temper. He once had one of his employee's convertibles (not a Mopar!) filled up with concrete when he saw the worker's car parked at a ladyfriend's house instead of being at work where he belonged!! He also once got his 3 day old Cadillac convertible stuck in the Florida mud at his new Mercury test center at Lake X, got enraged, climbed into a nearby D-5 Cat (he was a farm boy), dug a big hole, and buried it! He was famous for these sort of antics ...AND he had good taste - he almost always drove Chryslers and Imperials!! He had some interesting go-rounds with Highland Park during his Nascar days.. so anyway it IS Carl, not Karl.

An excellent biography of Carl Kiekhaefer is "Iron Fist... the lives of Carl Kiekhaefer, Caesar of a Marine Industial Empire" by Jeffrey Rodengen - a great read!

BTW - the "Full Jeweled" on the 300's roof referred to the fact that the Mercury outboards were the only outboards of the day to use all roller and needle bearing crank/rod bearings, one reason for their overwhelming racing supremacy. I'll try to post a pic of my fully restored 1957 Merc Mk 30 (30 cu in 4 cylinder 30hp) in Sarasota Blue (turquoise) and Sand Beige (off white).

Thanks, John! ... his bio is very entertaining and worth reading - he was an real
bundle of contradictions... he was known to pay in full, with cash, for an employees' operation ... yet also all too typical was one occasion when he was walking through his factory in Cedarburg Wisconsin and saw a worker sitting on a pallet of Coke. Enraged, he roared "COME WITH ME", and the cowed man follwed him quietly to his office, where Kiekhaefer ordered his secretary to find out what the man's back wages were and then wheeled around and yelled "YOU"RE FIRED - GET OUT" at the poor fellow... wherein the secretary piped up and said "Mr. Kiekhafer, he's a delivery man!" Kiekhaefer had "fired" the Coke man, who was waitng to make a delivery!

His brief exploits in Nascar and the Mexican Road Races were legendary - there's probably never been anyone there as colorful as Carl Kiekhaefer since those days!
best, Roger

First things first,
The Boxstrom/Lutz car has no relationship with the real Flying Mile 300B. Clearly, the recreation/tribute car is painted black, but the original Flying Mile B was sprayed Regimental Red at Jefferson Assembly. The photo of Carl Kiekhaefer with the Flying Mile B and the racing trophies on the ground was taken during the summer of 1956 in Wisconsin. The Flying Mile B was used to publicize the upcoming race at Road America in Elkhart Lake. Sadly, evidence suggests that this B, with VIN 3N561177, was a victim of parts scavenging to keep the racing Bs on the tracks during the latter half of the 1956 NASCAR GN season. Speaking of the racing Bs, the Cloud White example pictured above is the same one that Carl Kiekhaefer kept until his death in 1983. This car was mainly raced by Speedy Thompson, and originally had a VIN of 3N561175. Robert Valpey was responsible for the car's restoration in the 1990s.

Yes, and it is the same B that Tim Flock and Vicki Wood had over 140 mph on the sands of Daytona Beach during their speed runs in February 1956. The engine received a very quick dyno-tuning a few weeks (late January) prior to Daytona. The car also had a 3-speed manual transmission.

The black B recreation at the top of the thread has VIN 3N561560, which has no relationship with any 300B that Carl Kiekhaefer purchased or raced in 1956.

Well the description does refer to it as a "tribute" and that it was "faithfully refurbished to the design specifications which were inspired by the Carl Keikhaefer's NASCAR dominating 300B's." I don't think there was any attempt to deceive.

Late last year I received an email about the black car (originally painted Cloud White). Someone wanted to know if it was the real deal (former Kiekhaefer race car) or not. Needless to say, it is not, but the problem with tributes/recreations/one of nones is that people sometimes want to believe that the cars are real. It is the same problem with 1970 Chrysler 300 Hursts with 426 Hemis. They are as real as three dollar bills. The most notorious example being the Hurst Hemi convertible. Don't get me started on that car!

It doesn't matter further, the original post was from 2007, but.....The car this replicates...was RED. The way Carl Kiekhaefer's name was spelled on the rear fender, of THE ACTUAL RED CAR, back in the day, as approved by Carl himself.......is KARL! There is a clear picture on this website: http://www.chrysler300club.com/stories/ck/ck.html
That still doesn't excuse someone going to the time and expense of replicating a car color from a black and white photo, spending all that time and money to paint a car the WRONG color, then spending more time and money lettering it. So easy to research things like that on the web. Perhaps it's repainted red by now, or restored to a stock 300B, since that was 8 years ago.

Here's the photo that shows the original car of CARL's, with "Karl" painted on the rear fender. "Karl Kiekhaefer and Krew." Yes it was a RED car. Never trust a B&W negative to tell you a color. The Corvette on Route 66 the TV show (the one everyone assumes was red) was light metallic blue.

The above photo was taken on Kiekhaefer Corporation property in Wisconsin during the summer of 1956, but prior to the NASCAR Grand National race at Road America. Carl Kiekhaefer thought nothing of changing car colors and graphics to suit his purposes. Tim Flock's two-way average in the Flying Mile was actually 139.373 mph, with a one-way run of 142.914 mph. The Flying Mile B disappears after this time period, and was most likely cannibalized for parts to keep the surviving race cars on the tracks for the rest of the season.

Let's start with the white car: When Carl Kiekhaefer got into NASCAR, he took advantage of the opportunity to promote his line of outboard motors, which was Mercury. He would also include the name of the local Mercury Outboards dealer. At Daytona in February 1955, Hagood Brothers was displayed on the #300 stock car. Hagood Brothers was the Mercury dealer in Orlando, Florida. It still survives as Hagood Brothers Marine in Orlando. For most of the 1955 NASCAR GN season, "Mercury Outboards" was prominently displayed on Carl's stock cars, but paperwork in the Kiekhaefer archives point to Chrysler's public relations firm insisting on the use of "Kiekhaefer Outboards", instead. The reason was that Mercury dealers from Ford Motor Company were cashing in on the publicity of the "Mercury Outboards" Chryslers winning so much in AAA and NASCAR during 1955. Carl was not happy about making the change.
The red 300B received its graphics after Tim Flock blitzed the Flying Mile in February 1956. The car was put on display at Wist Auto Sales (Chrysler dealer in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin) during the winter of 1956. The sign board now with the surviving race car was displayed with the Flying Mile B while in Wist's showroom. Carl never missed an opportunity to promote his products or accomplishments. He did the same thing with one of his Chrysler Saratogas after the 1951 Mexican Road Race.
