Expert Posts: 4040 Location: Connecticut | The first old car salvage yard I ever visited was Kober's in Washington, NJ. That was back in the early 80s. Good people, reasonable prices, 10,000 old cars. The yard closed about five or six years ago after crushing most of what they had. I had a chance to photograph the yard in July, 1997. Recently, I pulled out the old negatives and scanned the best ones. They are now captioned and located on my Picasa site. Here's the link:

Expert Posts: 1303 Location: Farmingdale NJ | I have a couple friends that live in or near Washington. This yard came up in conversation a couple times in the past on this board. I believe someone told me there is (was) a car yard and a seperate truck yard. I think.... not sure.. the truck yard is still there with limited operating hours.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 444 Location: North of the 49th | Thanks for the pics.....it really bugs me when a yard like this goes under, all that lost inventory. We've had a few "local" yards go under the crusher after the original founder/owner passed away . One in particular had about the same number of cars as this yard and a lot of late 50's Chrysler products to boot it "went" when the original owner "went". The "family" said there was going to be an auction but it never happened ....the crusher moved in and took it all . We never had a chance!

It should be left there as it is, only assuring that no oil or hazardous liquids seeps into the soil. This is really a part of our history and should be valued. Also like Joakim says, a resource for cheap parts.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 444 Location: North of the 49th | I agree whole heartedly!! The other factor be all of the tree huggers...and they're picking up momentum.... the politicians listen to these guys 'cause they come across with all their hokus pokus that the politicians don't have a hot clue about.... Municipalities start passing bylaws and the like that will make an activity like Auto-wrecking or Auto restoration impossible.... These people hate cars and don't look upon our activities as "preservation" of history. We don't stand a chance 'cause we're the bad guys driving our "Gross polluters". Call me a pessimist but I do feel its going to get worse....

Extreme Veteran Posts: 444 Location: North of the 49th | What I would like to add to the above post is that we need to be environmentally responsible in our activities (controlling waste streams etc. and as wizard said to prevent any bad stuff from getting into the ground etc. I taught hazardous waste management to a bunch of Automotive hobbyists a short while ago (and will again) and it was all well recieved, this included parts car storage and retention I emphasized the fact that proper management of our automotive resources helps everyone, this type of thinking will help to prevent our hobby from becoming extinct. What bugs me is intentional exageration of a percieved problem by many who view our activities as contibuting to our environmental problems. I really enjoyed ronbo97's photographs it just resurected a bunch of feelings I had about our hobby....a hobby which I treasure and which is my main "off hours" activity.
