Not a typical "oldie", but it was recorded in 1954 - my favorite Joe Turner cut and a big reason why I like a little jump in my blues:

and on the same date 3rd February, but in 1967 we lost the genius of Joe Meek who had in a seance years before predicted Buddy's death on the 3rd Feb 1959.Joe had produced most of the best sounds of early '60s British pop music scene including Screaming Lord Sutch,The Tornados,Heinz,John Leyton etc and would along with songwriter Geoff Goddard hold seances to Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly to see if they thought the records they produced would be hits, here's one that was in 1961 A Tribute to Buddy Holly by Mike Berry and The Outlaws(Ritchie Blackmore was in this group) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTlcDRB2gbA&feature=realted

Thanks for posting that, Mark. Awesome documentary.

Really surprised how in-depth they got in less than an hour - never knew Eddie's first recordings were with the crooks who ran/owned Gold Star records. I'd only been able to get hold of a couple Liberty label 78's years ago.....

Glad you brought this thread back, Mark.

Recently dug every one of my 78's out of storage and came across a few goodies - one of the few instances one would be grateful for a memory lapse, as I'd COMPLETELY forgotten that I'd had these three (among others) 78's. Yes, not 45's, but 78's!!!!! You'll have to listen to the links below to find out and, perhaps, be as surprised as I was that I'd even forgotten I had these beauties in the first place:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3-OaNevkfg - NEAR MINT Canadian pressing on the green Regency label - #597

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZQbe4PlnPg - VG, plays E-, also Canadian pressing on the green Regency label - #561. I've got the NEAR MINT 1st pressing Specialty 45, but why I picked this baby up on 78 is still a bit of a mystery. Glad I've got it, nevertheless.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AdBp_xQDhM - and on the flip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFd4p5Hx-Xo - original Specialty 78 #579. VG- but plays VG+

One other cutie pie I forgot to remember I had is a super rare DeLuxe label 78 of "Howling At Midnight" by Willis Jackson "and his Orchestra", as well as a maroon label Atco label 78 of "Smokey Joe's Cafe" by The (Coasters) Robins and a couple of early Federal label 78's by The Dominoes - even some Amos Milburn on red label ("Jazz Series") Aladdin from 1947 (I have plenty of Milburn's 78's from the early 1950's, just forgot I'd had one THAT early - PRE-Chickenshackers era).

What a way to kick off the long weekend, I tell ya.

Old music never dies - it sometimes may be forgotten until someone dust it off, throw it on the turntable and it will be strong, aged and greater than ever

Got no rock & roll or rockabilly, but a little over a week ago, I started uploading jazz & authentic swing sides from my stash of 78's to YouTube.

Got 23 cuts so far and not one ounce of schmaltz to be found - all sound engineered by yours truly: http://www.youtube.com/user/SwingMan1937#grid/uploads

Here's a sample - a little "C Jam Blues" by Duke Ellington right off of Victor 27856: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7AjmNknc-0
