fabulous! were the same colours used for the whole canadian chrysler range of 1961? love the parakeet green!! i have a canadian double page add for the new fury coupe, the canadian fold out brochure [with orangey/ yellow cover] folds out to a massive poster with illustrations of all the plymouth/ valiant models. and ive got the canadian owners kit [little folder with owners manual, certified car care plan booklet] plus tonnes and tonnes of gear for the US '61 plymouths. even though i have a wagon i collect the sales/ advertising merchandise etc for the whole '61 plymouth range. thanks for you info, help and pics... very much appreciated, and very interesting! cheers adriana

Yes, in Canada Chrysler, Ford and GM used the same colours on all cars, although in the 1950's GM had certain colours available only on Oldsmobiles and Buicks. In the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's GM and Chrysler had unique to Canada colours while Ford had a few. By 1960 Chrysler and GM had mostly American colours and with the implementation of the Canada-US auto trade agreement for the 1966 model year, all the unique Canadian colours were gone.

The Canadian 1961 Plymouth brochure I have has the same illustrations as your folder, less the Valiant info. I have the Canadian Dodge Dart and Dart-Valiant equivalents. I have a collection of American and Canadian brochures dating back into the early 1950's with a few in the 1940's. Plus adverts going back into the 1920's. That coupled with the books, manuals, etc. I have - I hate moving!

And to show you what Parakeet looks like on a car . . . This one was for sale a few years back. Cannot remember what they were asking - I think $3,800? Unfortunately I was $3,700 short. I love the 1960-62 Valiants and Lancers and this one I really like.

I was in Lima, Peru the summer of '99.

Saw this '61 Plymouth wagon on the street. Had to lean out the window of the bus to get the shot. A film camera was all I had.

The photo shown is a photo of the photo I took with the film camera.

Back of the wagon was full of stuff, crates of fruit on top, and a tire on top of that.

Hi
Sending some new taken pictures of my Fury. I have posted some about two ago, so when I read this thread I thought maybe it could be of interest to see some more 1961 Plymouth´s pictures. As you can see the steering wheel was ina really bad shape and I realized that I couldn´t fix a clearcoated one so I had it painted metalflake instead. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Hello Adriana

Yes, thats correct that it´s the air cond inlets you see on the dashboard. The car have quite lot of options from new. Some of them is,Double outside mirrors, Tinted windows, Air cond, Bumperguard, Headlight trimplates with the spears at the sides (What I understand, a lot of the members here don´t like the trimplates and the bumperguard), Power windows, Stone shields. I put the hubcaps from a 1962 Dodge on the car and painted them in the same colour as the car. Like them better tahn the original. And what you also noticed, put the lenses from 1959 Caddy on the car. Think that it suits the style of the car good. The engine in the car is a 383 cui so it could move good if I want. I´m a fan of old Rock´n roll records from the 50´s and early 60´s so some of the records am I playing now and then when I drive the car. But such a record player is really a destroyer of the records, so the records in nice condition am I not playing in the car. The needle in the record player is working with a high pressure so it should not skip if the road is bumpy where you drive the car. Do you like the music from the 50´s? In those days you had in Australia a good Rock´n roll star, Johnny O´Keefe. But I belive you are to young to remember him. But if I´m not wrong, in his big days he drove a Forward Look car. 1960 Dodge or something like that. Maybe some from Australia knows what car Johnny O´Keefe drove. But one thing for sure, No CD player in such a car. It should be the 7 " records.
Wish you good luck with your project. It´s really a nice car you have.

dave! does that mean that you have pics of your sub? i am dying to see them! i shall decode when i get a moment... rockin T i love the aluminum trim, being a girl i call em 'mascara inserts'! i really want a set for my sub, however i am not a hug fan of the fury bar! i have one for my sub and refuse to put it on.... ive never seen a '61 with the air con option before, must be rather rare. you must not presume that because i am young, that i dont know anything and that i would not know who johnnie o'keefe is... i love 50's and 60's music! i have heaps of records and my ipod is full of old songs... im glad you've heard of our johnnie okeefe! im sure that everyone who has read my threads knows how mad i am, i was definately born in the wrong decade! things these days have no meaning, soul or presence, so i much prefer things from the 50's and 60's, i just love all my retro and vintage stuff! i am stoked that i have the plymouth am radio option, over here we have a station on the AM band that plays all the old songs, so thats what its tuned for, yeah no need for a CD player.... thanks for your kind words, cheers adriana

I collect records as well, although I have only bought a few in the last few years. I estimate I have about 2000 LP's and 200 45's from the late fifties to mid eighties.

Adriana, I did go back to Ohio and pulled my sub out of storage. I took a bunch of pictures. Despite having gas that was about eight years old (with stabilizer) it fired up immediately and ran great. I even drove it twenty miles to my mothers house. It was a balst to drive again. But, as I metioned, I can't really justify keeping it. I'll probably offer it up here and then on to eBay.

rockin T - 2008-08-20 3:54 PM the King of Aussie rock'n roll and on of my favorite Aussie acts Johnny O'Keefe drove a 1959 Plymouth Belvedere that he bought in 1960 after his trip to the USA which was a failure, he wanted to creat an image of an Aussie Rock star that had hit big time over seas, and bought the bigest, and brightest chrome ladden tank he could find here in australia as soon as he returned home! The chicks really dug it! he use to drive like an absolute nut case with his foot flat to the floor all the time, as a result no one would get in the car with him, as a result while on tour early 1961 he wrote of the Plymouth after driving head on at flat out speed straight into a tip truck, the Plymouth was so bad it was unidentifiable, he almost lost his life, but went on to recover, a pruduce hit after hit in Aus, and always owned flash US Autos his next most famous being a 1968 Ponti firebird conv that he used to stack on a regular basis due to driving stonned of his head! Another famous Aussie who completely wrote of a forward looker when new was aussie Olympic athelete Dawn frazer she was injured badly when she wrote of a 1958 Belvedere! Just thought I share some of my Aussie rock 'n roll knowledge with you lot sorry if I bored anyone.

Yep, a major part of the fun of owning an olde car is finding and equipping it with options and era-correct aftermarket do-dads/goodies
(front grille-guards on 61 PLY's excepted, of course; IMO, that grille guard detracts from the waterfall appearance of the grille).

Is that Beaver Cleaver on the right? I knew that beginning with season 3 (1960) Chrysler Corporation supplied the cars used in the show. I don't remember many 1961 Plymouth wagons though.

yeah its from the show... one of the main cars in the show was a '61 plymouth four door hardtop, and theres many subs in the street scenes, never seen the show myself, been trying to find it on dvd boxset, but its not released over here yet.... another movie people should check out is blue hawaii, a couple of subs in the street scenes and also elvis drives around in one... the movie is weak as, but worth a look for the '61 wagons... ill post some screen grabs of the wagons...

Adriana,

That picture was taken in front of Jerry Junemann's (sp?) Mopar museum in Hayes Kansas. I don't know if that museum is still open, but Jerry had some fantastic MoPars. He had seen the wagon running around locally for years and tracked down the owner to buy it because he was sure it would otherwise end up a derby car. The guy he bought it from used it as a fishing wagon, but if you could see what he had etched into both quarter windows, he used it for a little more than fishing. I bought the car from Jerry through an ad in a MoPar magazine.

Also, there use to be a web site run by a guy named Dave (Smith maybe) devoted only to 1961 Plymouth Suburbans. It was a cool site and he had the same picture on the site with an inquiry as to who owned it. I told him I had it. The site was developing nicely then just disappeared a number of years ago.

Dave

Hey Gang!

Indeed, the Wagonmans Wagonland site was mine. That was back in my AOL days. Unfortunately it is long gone. I had the Robins egg blue Sport Suburban from 1997 thru 2000. It is now in Maryland owned by rob aka: Pistolgrip.

I was lured back here by Adriana. It looks like she has tracked down most of the ones I had found. I'll add some pics later as I am at work doing this now. SSSHHHH! LOL.

Dave

Ok, good news. I found my scrapbook and I still have some pics from the old wagonland website.

Here are 4 pics of Adriana's wagon I received from the previous owner 10 years ago.

Also a photo I took of a sweet wagon I found in a junkyard in Maricopa, Arizona in 1997. It looks like you could just drive it away! But the desert sun baked the interior to death. The square steering wheel disolved into dust went I reached in and grabbed it.

Nice! I'll bet the 57 and the 59 Chebby owners are green with envy.

Yes I do. I'll scan them in tomorrow morning. Can't say for sure if it was a 9 passenger or not. As far as I can tell, the easiest way to tell if it has the rear seat is by the rear assist grab handles and the black rubber step pads on the bumper. So if that is the case it probably does.

I don't recall which of them I emailed with. It was 10 years ago after all!

I have alot more pics to scan and upload. I received alot of pics from the owner (then) of the coral and white wagon. Some nice interior pics too.

I have more pics of the white and green Custom suburban. The owner then was in California. That wagon is now on the East coast on Long Island. I see it at local car shows.

There was also a fairly rough wagon in Canada too. I couldn't find that Dutch export catalog. I might have resold it on ebay after I sold my wagon. I did have a copy of the "Fix your Plymouth" book too. I do remember selling that on ebay. Maybe you bought it? LOL

I do have a very rare advertisement that was only published as a Sunday insert. It is a big multi page foldout showing all the Mopar wagons for 1961. The centerfold shows all the wagons parked in a big circle with a great view in front of a blue and white sport suburban. It is too big to scan, so i'll have to take a digital picture of it.. Right now it is framed and hanging on a wall. I did check out your pics of what you have collected so far and didn't see it.

I have boxes of car brochures, so I'll have to keep digging to see what else I have.

David

Yes! That is the fold out advert. Those are very hard to find.

That does look like the export catalog I had. Mine was pretty big. About the same size as the large domestic catalog. $14? It wasn't mine then. I would have put a reserve on something like that at $50 or more.

Ok, I found two more of that wagon.

They are not the best quality however.

It is a nice "Sport Suburban" with the square steering wheel.
I don't like the extra trim around the headlamps. Looks too garrish.

The seat material looks to be in good shape.
I wish I had written notes on the back of the pics.

Adriana,

You might still be able to buy NOS fabric to recover your seats. Back when I had my wagon I ordered some original fabric from a company in Hemmings Motor News. I am pretty sure it was Original Auto Interiors, inc.

Here are some pics of that nice Coral coloured wagon.

What makes you think it has been repainted? It looks good to me. The car was fairly low mileage I thought. Something like 54,000 miles on it then.

Pretty sweet looking coral wagon although there's nothing I can see in the pictures to indicate it has had a respray.
