Got a nice picture of Miss B. from Bill T. (a.k.a. "Dazzling Dodge") that he allowed me to share.

The sheet metal that is on that fender seems to be cleaning up, but what about the LACK of metal in the areas where the rustouts occurred (like the frame)? These will definitely need the creation of metal, or replacement parts......

Neil, I think it's just the contrast of the rusty/muddy rim against the cleaned wheelcover that you are seeing. ---John

Anyone, that is... other than "Personal Consultant" Steve Hobby.
He got a chance to feel her up real good.

Probably no pictures since then... The car probably crumbled after he touched her.

She is not running yet?, wasn’t this rust remover bring her back? I said it when she was still under ground and now: SHE IS GONE, these idiots of Tulsa should put her inside of the courthouse room, and seal the door with bricks or something like they did with that vette inside of a store. Well who could know then, a total lost of a fine automobile.

I guess in the beginning I was under the impression they were going to dunk the whole car..If they are really trying to stop the rusting process how are they going to get to the inside of the sheetmetal without dunking the whole car ? The inside of the rear quarter panels, the fenders, the frame and underbody?? Those areas are probably worse because at least the outside painted areas were supposedly gooped with cosmoline or whatever rust inhibiting stuff they had in those days.. poor miss belvy

it just seems amateur at best when you see cement blocks being used as jack stands. Added to that, they are laying on their side which is very weak.

Amen to that Bro. One of the first things I learned in Auto Mechanics was that cement blocks make poor jackstands and a guy who crawls under his car while he's using them takes his life in his hands.

OK, a little history lesson here on WHY the car was put into a concrete vault and buried undergraound.
You older guys. What was the worst fear, they were teaching us kids back then? Other, than Polio.
The Cold War! I remember drills of crawling under my desk and 'covering' my head with my hands. (looking back, what ^%$#in' good would that do!?) It was the Russins who were gonna 'nuke' us! The Russians got Sputnick into the space first. Who got controll of sapce could rule the world! That proprganda scared us kids, untill recess.
Look how many fallout shelters were being built underground back in the '50's!
Remember them saying in the bruial description. This bunker/vault could withstand a NUCULAR attack! One rerason a 5 gallon can of gas was installed. They predicted that there was going to be NO world in 2 or 3 years. The Russians were going to take over.
The poeple of Tulsa was more conserned with the car/vault surviving a nucular attack over water leakage. That is why it was buried underground.

......... go back and look at that Hobby picture I posted, and Fearless' picture above. Other than Hobby standin' there,,,,,, then is no change.
I hate to admit, looking at those blocks scares me! I was taught the correct way to use cemet blocks as jackstands was, the 'web' upright, and a 2 X 8 or 8" wide board on the ground then the cement block, another board, another bolck if necessary and another board between the car frame and block

OMG!!!!????

You mean to say that the car is NOT "turning to dust " (which was a reason for Ultra- F- Up to get
involved in its 'preservation') ?????

Funny you should mention the Russkies; in my 7/6/57 issue of Life, at home right now, which featured the story
on the burying of Ms. Belvie, I recall that the USSR had an exhibition of their 'consumer-goods' displayed in some
city, which I want to say was Oklahoma City!!

Ya know-- this whole Miss Belvie deal is a real tragedy. When she came out of the tomb, yes she was a rusted sad sight --but somehow she was still majestic , being lifted from the tomb- coming down the street on a trailer to the auditorium, being unveiled when the curtains opened,. And then the debacle of the unveiling-but she was still of worth even after that. We all (Or most) know the best thing for miss belvie and her owner ( $$$) would to have perserved her and put her on display in a reputable museum, like 57 Heaven- she would have retained her majestical mystique. But NOOOO-greed had to rear its ugly head. What is there now? This car is already altered and its " as unearthed" status can NEVER be brought back. What value is she now to her owner? Even if he wanted to restore her and spend the mucho money to do it--what value would it have other than the story behind it , and that won't buy many tickets to see it. What value to Ultra -one? They screwed up what was left- I don't see any bragging rights on the miraculous rust removal and returning her to original glory. They might be the only profiteers- that is if miss belvie's owner pays them and does not sue them for destroying her. Is she still Miss Belvie after everything but the stainless steel and the hubcaps have been replaced?-----------------Sad--just SAD............................................MO

I'd like to go on record as being against restoration from jump street.

Preservation? Hell yes, IF this stuff would arrest the rusting process and keep her from crumbling to dust.

Think they screwed the pooch on the de-rusting and, thus, have halted pics showing progress?

Anybody can go see any-old rusted out piece of junk at any wrecking yard (or sometimes, in someone's HOME-yard).

If you wanted to see what Ms. Belvie looked like, after her 50 year slumber (torture?)--IT'S TOO LATE, NOW !!!!

I hope that the family, with the former-dollar-signs in their eyes, is proud, now, of what they have
allowed to be done to the car.

Just checked - here's the latest:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I talked to Dwight
by carguylee on Thu May 15, 2008 12:40 pm

Ok everyone, I was able to talk to Dwight today, and he had some very reasonable answers for what is going on.

First of all he said there hasn't been any work done on Miss Belvedere since the photo of her with the fender looking pretty decent. They have been having a tough time with the caked on stuff that has become like concrete which someone else on here posted. It was good to note though that he said they have a chemist working on it and trying to come up with something to remove that stuff easier.

Second he said that there wasn't any rush to work on her, there are no events scheduled to put a rush on it so they are trying to take their time. He said this summer they plan to get aggressive with trying to work on her, and plan to remove the body from the frame, but that they are treating her as an artifact.

Third he said there hasn't been anything on the website because there hasn't been anything done and they lost their web person and don't have another one yet.

So we have some reasonable answers, he also said that nothing crazy is going on with the car, so no worries there. It's best to give them the benifit of the doubt at this point. So we will hopefully see some progress starting this summer. He also pointed out that they are taking lots of pictures, and that there was a magazine out there recently too, I forgot to write down the name of it.

So I guess it's wait and see time again.carguylee

1) Attempting to restore Miss Belvedere...
2) Allowing Steve Hobby within 100 yards of this car...

And those are just a couple of things we already KNOW about.

Of course, the list could go on and on regarding "crazy" behaviour around the car...
Including, but not limited to the following actions:

* Proposing marriage to Miss Belvedere (and/or attempting to consummate said union)...
* Cutting the car in half with a sawzall...
* Dancing naked around the car when nobody is looking...
* Tossing a lighted sign on the roof of the car and using her to deliver pizzas...
* Holding a seance to contact the displaced spirit of Miss Belvedere...
* Inviting a faith healer to lay hands on Miss Belvedere...

Yeah, I personally wanted preservation so the rusting process could at least be arrested or even halted - don't support restoration at all.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I too have been frustrated by the lack of news on Miss Belvedere, so thanks to one of the gents on this board, I sent an email to The Tulsa World and just got a response from Randy Krehbiel, here is his response.

"Jake:

I am planning a follow up story for next month, the anniversary of the "dig." I have talked to Dwight Foster a couple of times, including this week, and seen some fairly recent photos of the car. They do seem to be making some progress, but very slowly. Foster told me this week the frame has completely failed and he's going to transfer the body to another Belvedere frame."

So it looks like she is not fairing as well as we thought. Chime in.

Well DUH! We could have told the Ultra-Dud dodos that was going to happen last June! Corrosion that was so bad that it crumbled the rear leaf springs and left them in pieces in the vault must have been attacking the frame too. It's lucky that the car didn't break in half while it was being transported to the convention hall!

If the corrosion was that bad, what makes Ultra-Dud and Steve Hobby think it'll be possible to separate the frame from the body to slide a new solid Belvedere frame underneath it and not have the body fold up like a piece of used aluminium foil? Mark my words, they're going to be selling the rusty remains by the bucket-load to the incredulous before they're done f**king with it.

OK Guys,
I hope I can put some of the speculation to rest. Last week I had a business trip to the Big Apple and on Friday decided to visit Ultra One with the hopes of seeing Miss Belvedere again. I met with Dwight Foster for well over an hour and was able to take as many pictures of the car as I wanted. (Please excuse the pix' quality, the only thing I had was a disposable camera!!) I'll post some of them here and will put the rest of them in an album here when I have time. Everything echoed by Dwight in earlier posts in this thread he told me. (No progress pictures because he lost his website guy, the clay hardened to concrete, no rush to work on her....) The first picture on this thread, posted by Fearless, is basically how the car looks today, (except the hood is off). It still covered in the concrete-like clay which Dwight sees as one of his greatest obstacles toward refurbishment. It's still sitting on the concrete blocks. A donor car (Savoy) was found in North Carolina and will serve as a replacement frame as well as other replacement parts. As for the plans for the car, Dwight told me that the sole goal of the owner and Ultra One is to get the car running and driving under its own power with as much of her originality as possible intact. There are no plans to restore her beyond this point. Dwight is aware of the comments made on the Ultra One forum and emphasized that it is not his intention to keep anyone in the dark RE Miss B's progress. As I stated above he does not have a website person and only has limited human resources to do the work in his shop. As for an unveiling the owner hopes to return Miss B next summer to Tulsa and have her unveiled on top of the vault at the courthouse. He has been in touch with Paula Hale, Sharon King Davis et al about another "Tulsarama". The car would then go on tour to venues such as Carlisle. Dwight said he welcomes visitors to Ultra One and has nothing to hide. He's extremely personable and welcomes all questions. As for my intentions, all I wanted was to see the car, (I had no hidden agenda!)! As the pictures below will show, they have been able to clean up the right fender quite a bit. It appeared pretty solid; the best way to describe the finish of the fender is a comparison to river rocks which are imbedded in concrete used in driveways and patios. I think you can see what I mean in the photo. They cleaned up a piece of a valve cover and got it remarkably clean. You can also see the results on the radiator cap as well as other areas such as the steering wheel. The dashboard has been cleaned enough to confirm that the car has 4 miles on it. The Jiffy Jet bag was in good shape and you can still read the MOPAR logo on the battery (it was never disconnected). I also saw the cowl tag, (the tag just under the hood right above the master cylinder) and the number on it is 9421. They have not yet opened the drivers door to see the VIN tag. There is a hole in the roof, a hole in the right rear panel above the wheel and quite a few holes in the valance between the rear fender and trunk. I was amazed at how well they were able to clean the wheel covers; they have also been in the trunk and salvaged the spare tire as well as the jack and other items, (they found another Schlitz can). The gentleman in the photo of the donor car is Dwight. Enjoy the pix; shoot me any ?? you may have.....

Another note:

Many of you have probably seen the recreation in a hangar of the fuselage of TWA 800, the 747 which crashed in the Atlantic shortly after takeoff from JFK about 10 years ago. Dwight noted that they have salvaged quite a bit of the car's interior upholstery and hope to "recreate" and put on display with the car the interior with the original fabric much like TWA 800. (Although they're planning on using as much of the original interior as they can, (seat supports etc), in the "refurbished" car.

Good on ya, Mike! I know if I was on a business trip, my spare time would be down to nil. Thanks much, guy!!!

Just what I was afraid of, though - she sat too long without any treatment whatsoever to arrest the rusting process. Now, she's as brittle as attic newspaper and they're gonna end up crumpling her by attempting to set her on a new frame at this point.

Yea I don't know how they plan on getting that frame under her....Dwight did say he wished he would have gotten the car before the clay had hardened to concrete and had been able to rinse that stuff off!!!

Thanks Mike for the report and pics. At last, I feel we got some very credible information. At this point, the only thing they CAN do is replace the frame. Did you see the condition or if there was any floor pams left? My bet is that they can support the body well enough to roll the frame under it. Especially if there are floor braces still there......................................MO

Steve, can't really comment on the condition of the floor pans. I can say the rear quarters are pretty thin as evidenced by the holes which have popped up since Tulsarama. The glass has also been etched by the water and clay but Dwight thinks he may be able to clean it up somewhat. He also plans to use the trunk lid braces and trunk torsion bars from the donor car to replace those on Miss B......

Where are the pictures of you on the floor... looking up under her with a spotlight?
If you had been able to take a picture like THAT, we could've called you a "consultant," too!

Great post, Mike... Good to hear (and SEE) what's actually going on with the car up there.
Thanks for the update!
