Elite Veteran Posts: 632 Location: Belford, NJ | I swapped a '61 413 which has an alternator into my '60 Belvedere, which used a generator. What are some of the things I have to take into account when using the alternator from the '61?

Elite Veteran Posts: 632 Location: Belford, NJ | I'll have to hunt down a regulator from a '61 then. You'll have to forgive me... electrics are NOT my specialty. Thanks!

Elite Veteran Posts: 632 Location: Belford, NJ | So I can use a single wire GM alternator as long as I can get it mounted correctly? That might be the way to go... I think I might have one in my father's basement.

Expert Posts: 1488 Location: Florida | Normally, a single-wire alternator is an aftermarket offering as a complete unit. They were not installed from the factory, but made expressly for easy installation in hot rods and cars with difficult-to-trace charging problems. The regulator is built into the alternator. I recall seeing 'em in the JC Whitney catalog some time ago.

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | I just did a generator-to-OneWire alternator swap on my '60 Chrysler. The alt has a couple of extra wires on the back but it only needs 1 thick wire connected to the positive batterypost to work. Just a glimpse of the alternator here: Edited by BigBlockMopar 2008-04-11 3:14 PM

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | Mopar-style, but not made by Mopar. I can look up the brand/ of it if you want. I got 1 other still in the box. Edited by BigBlockMopar 2008-04-11 5:35 PM
