I can't remember if it was Wednesday or Thursday (hey it's an eternity ago, I don't even own a watch, let alone a calendar), but the cover was off the vault and I remember trying to be there early. Oh well, I guess they had their reasons. Shame i missed it. I'm just glad they didn't acid strip the car before I saw it, or put some of Boyds wheels on it..

Marc; if you saw Miss Belvie, residing in the open-topped vault, you WERE there on WED morning 6/13/07.

Later that AM, the City installed a white vinyl 'roof-cover' over the vault, and installed vinyl-sheeting around the
perimeter of the chain-link fencing, surrounding the vault area.

What are you, a friggin detective?!? When I got there the white tent was in place. This was at approxiamately 0500 hours on the day of my arrival. I was wearing a light brown t-shirt and new jeans, which I bought in San Francisco 4 days earlier. Must have chucked the receipt, I don't seem to have it.

I am an insurance investigator, if that's what you mean; I believe that you wrote that "the cover was off the vault", and that you
tried to get there early.

Guess that you didn't get there early enough.

Yes, I believe that they put the tent there AFTER they took the cover off the fault. I saw a newspaper article in a gas station as I was coming into Tulsa showing the exposed car (under that raggedy old cover) in the vault (no lid on vault at that point). Some hours later upon my arrival in tulsa there was what appeared to be a white tent in the area where I had expected to see the exposed vault at that time. It was around this time I decided to change my socks from blue to black with gold top to conceal my identity.

Good on ya, or whatever!

Just drove me cah 500 miles, this past weekend, to SoCal!

Had one close-call, where, on a 2-lane section, an older Fart Exploder, attempting to pass a lorry (or, is that 'lorrie'?) passed by me at a distance of about 2-3 feet--didn't have time to make a close measurement---at closing speeds of 130+ mph, in my traffic lane.

I had an about 3' paved shoulder, but didn't feel like moving over any more than I had to, to ensure a safe passage; yeah, I was alone in the car.

Glad I was riding on Diamondback tires.

I'll try not to smile....gotta look tough and mean..go ahead, make my DAY.....!

I smile a lot 'cause my job is easy---that is, if you LIKE getting up at 8:30, getting to your office by 10:30, and quitting
work at about 4:30- 5:00-ish, and I live about .5 mile from my office.

I'm just-now getting an assignment from a company regarding a 60-gallon fuel-oil spill at a residence, which will get me off my seat
here and meeting a new FRIEND, with some serious problems (different from y'all's problems!)

Wouldn't Ultra-F-Up, or the Lucky-Family (Chinese-food joke) be interested in buying-back this
possibly- stolen-item?

I would presume that the Profiteer is prepared to provide the high-bidder with clear-title to the
Shroud of Touring, with receipts and documents, confirming his (un-)lawful possession of it.

Q: Hello all i also have part of the cover, and a piece of the side glass, vent window,s they had to break them to get in the car, the doors would not open from the hinges rusting so bad, they were able to roll the window,s down to take the inside pictures that all the world would see,i also have some of the dirt from were the car was dug up. here is the scary part of the storie bouyd cottington died shortly after vewing the 57 plymouth, thats some pertty nasty mold there.? ? beware. good luck. im keeping my piece od the cover from miss belvedere. May-10-08
A: Well done. Perhaps you have the piece that was torn from the left side fin?

Q: Do you own the Time Capsule Plymouth that the cover came off??? I am an automotive journalist and I am interested in the car and what has become of it. Sincerely Greg Janeczek May-06-08
A: Sorry Greg, I do not have the time capsule car that you are interested in.You can find it at ultraone.com. good luck

Q: As an attendee and 1957 Plymouth nut, I'm curious as to who you are and how you managed to get the original cover from the Tulsa Historical Society . . . also why would you WANT to sell it? May-05-08
A: Hi fury57, I'm also a Plymouth nut that attended the unearthing. I'm sure my answer to Dwight's question will satisfactorily answer yours. Thank you for your question.

Q: just curious how did you get the the cover? I have the car .thanks Dwight May-05-08
A: Hi Dwight, Whilst in Tulsa for the unearthing of Miss Belvedere. I was horrified to find out that after the unveiling event, the soggy cover was destined for the trash, only through great persistence was the cover able to be saved. since then great care has been taken to preserve its condition and thus its historical integrity.

Wow, that's interesting! Some onto-it person from overseas rescues a 'national treasure' from the trash, nobody ever questions it's wheareabouts until it's posted on ebay, then everybody bitches that it was a piece of American history was 'stolen', and then nobody bids on it, then people say they wouldn't pay 1000 bucks for it anyway.. Well, you guys can bitch all you want, I'm off to the bank for a loan, I don't care about official ownership documents, I want this thing!

It's like bitching about the u.s. economy and buying foreign goods at the same time. Or complaining that you can't afford it and having a new Dodge Ram in the driveway. I drive a 500 buck '76 Falcon (yes we were still making em down here in '76) to work everyday, and I'd be happy to part with some cash for this thing. And I don't bitch about the price of gas either because it runs on propane. He he he..

Well, I had a great weekend. Rescued a '60 Belevere from the crusher, and it's almost ready for it's maiden voyage. Rebuilt the front brakes, blocked off the rear. You're not going to see me for tire smoke :-)

I don’t know if you can call that bitching, first of all nobody not related to the show organizers suppose to be inside of the building, or be close to the car.
During the show, I managed to jump to the main floor with the car, when the sheriff officer that was holding the people turn around for a second, when I was there I saw some souvenirs at hand, but I am respectful to the things that don’t belong to me.
Somebody definitely giveaway the tarp, probably a guilty feeling for a guy flying from that far to see a local piece of junk..

Just thinking about it and how cool would it have been if the car had been preserved in a glass case in one of your great automotive museums (eg, Petersons), and the cover was suspended above it around a frame in the shape of a '57 Plym 2dr hdtp..

Maybe I could recreate that by parking a Belvedere at the bottom of a swimming pool for a few decades :-)

I still can't believe nobody back in '57 had the foresight to install a small drain and hand pump? Mind you those Plymouths could have used a few more drain holes as well..

Did the Nazis call it "liberating" artwork, that nobody complained about losing?

Revisiting the Vault issue, it is fairly evident that a considerable amount of H2O leaked into it from the TOP, due to the LACK of a formal sealing system, as was seen when the lids were merely lifted off of the sides.

The Arkansas River overflowed its banks at least once during the 50 years.

What is really a shame, is that the car wasn't welded-up inside a steel enclosure, like the time capsule was.

The T.C. was a COMPLETE grody mess, when unearthed from the swamp of the bottom of the vault, but its enclosures were BRAND-new, inside of it, when it was cut-open.

The good burghers of T-Town placed too much blind trust in that concrete vault, and the sprayed-in sealer, but, they forgot to seal the upper sides/lid areas; not even a tongue-and-groove sealing.

I really doubt that much water got into the vault, from percolation via the sides and the bottom, but the City didn't care to do any forensic analysis of the vault, before filling it up, right after the un-earthing ceremony.

All they need is any old 57 / 58 Plymouth,( from a Yard or the Crusher ) and Completely cover it with the Tarp being Offered for Sale.. WHO is gonna know it isn,t the Original " Miss Belve "underneath.. Cos Ultra One aint Talking............. LOL

Got a brief reply from Paula Hale, who is 'looking-into' this matter.

I suggested that this deal be referred to The City, the PD and/or the D.A.'s office.

Forgot to mention the Media; I'll re-send her that comment, but, she's received this thread.

Suddenly its worth something. hey has anyone been to the shop the car is at and posed as a potential customer wanting to check out the establishment. thats what i would do. then use your secret agent spy scope to broadcast the whole thing on the net. duh. come on you lot lets not hang this guy who saved a national treasure from certain doom and try save what is left of the car and the legacy. i too was at the unveiling and touched the cover and the car and also pointed out to a trooper that the flag was on the floor and being trod on by the bunch of overaged tots on the night of their lives. he was most upset when i said to him "not very patriotic around here are we" and as for that boyd guy may he rest in pieces . he started the demise of the car by telling his goons to break the quarter vent with a springloaded dot punch and then screw drivered the trunk lid open and the glove compartment suffered the same fate. nice work . ooh look at the shiney chrome under the dirt lets see if we can clean some more of it off. fools. i circumnavigated the earth and spent close to $10 k getting to tulsa and was quite taken by the whole thing even though my heart belongs to the blue oval. unfortunately i was shocked by the dumb ass approach to the whole thing that will go down in my book as a farce. what were they thinking putting someone who had no idea of the importance of the preservation of the contents of a time capsule in charge of a time capsule that saw almost 8000 people show up from all over the world to see it opened only to bear witness to a bunch of 60 year old school children with a new sandpit to wreck take charge. pathetic i say. shame on the tulsa historical society and shame on the mayor for letting this hugely monumental task be given to these people. if it were up to me i would spank the lot of them and put them in the time out corner. then i would have done like that suburbanite suggested and put it in the museum. i know the car belonged to the winners family but surely that guy should have been brainwashed into putting the car along with the contents of the capsule into the museum and given some kind of compensation from the county for his generosity. come on it was clear that the car would never hit the road again and he should have been told in no uncertain terms to preserve that car just the way it came out. shame shame shame.
on a lighter note the band that played in mcnallys on friday night rocked. i was impressed. also walking through tulsa downtown at 3 in the morning with a bunch of drunks is quite a hoot. you should give it a go sometime.

Mr. s**ta, Sam, the Shroud of Touring has ALWAYS been worth "something"; it, just, until recently, has not been
OFFERED for sale by anyone (rightful owner, or not!).

Speaking of VALUE, and Mark Hash can verify this.....after the lids were removed, on 6/13/07, the Documentary's videographer,
Charlie Allsip, was offered SERIOUS money, for his STREET SHOES, which he wore while walking around Ms. Belvie's vault,
which got all muddy-nasty, while he video-taped the still-shrouded car!

Charlie swore Mark & me to secrecy about the car's condition (which was then still a State Secret), when he showed
us his unedited footage OF the car inside the Vault, while he was video'ing Mark's car behind the 'Tree's parking lot, and,
Secret Agent Spy-Scope Sir Clive Reeve, and his Henchman assistant, Agent 99 (Furious Bassman Charlie)
did their level-best to pry The Secret from me, using copious quantities of grain alcohol, but, to NO avail !!!!

Haven't been much on the site lately and just found this thread. I have to say that some of the things said here are odd to say the least. Yes, it would have been nice if the Tulsa people would have had a clue of what the event was about to the Forward Look people and even nicer if it all would have had a happy ending. But no, the event went wrong on so many levels. I had personally waited for more than 20 years to witness it and spent a LOT of money to do the trip instead of using it for a house downpayment. To me it did not matter that the car was (unfortunately) in such a bad shape. To me it was still THAT 1957 Belvedere I wanted to see, penned by Virgil Exner in the most glorious era of car design. That car could never be ugly. As I said to a member here, no matter how wrong many things went and how bad a shape the car is, it is still beautiful . This is the essence many people failed to see, especially the organizers and the Boyd goons. No respect at all. Didn' t the poor car already suffer enough?

Now, here comes a guy from the other side of the planet and is all gung ho about all things Chrysler. As most of us, he realizes that the event is going all down the toilet. He witnesses that the cover IS GOING TO THE DUMPSTER AND LUCKILY MANAGES TO SAVE IT! Yeah, I hate the fact that I wasn't that guy and that it doesn't go with the car and yada yada yada. Fact remains, the dude saved the cover and Hats off to him I say! If he puts in on eBay with a $1000 starting bid what is wrong with that? I say that is definitely the minimum to ensure that some other idiot doesn't put it in a dumpster again. It is funny how money makes a difference in those things..at least for people who don't have other values. Sadly, the world is full of people like that.

Now people here want to report Paula Hale about this???? Isn't the Tulsa people the ones that should blamed for the whole catastrophe? No one cared, plain and simple. I can see how not being a car person all this talk might be a bit surreal but that is why you want to consult experts in the field. NOT BOYD! Nothing can be done about the event anymore but don't blame the one guy that did the right thing. I have just one question: Where is the supporting structure from under the car? Or was that (heaven forbid) junked?

On a lighter note, I have a bunch of large photos from Tulsa here;

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=172...

And more from my trip here;

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=172...

It was nice meeting so many good people from the site, hope you are all doing well! Found a pic of me in one of the threads (looking for an angle beside the 300C)

Hans

PS Almost forgot to add, I am not a drinker but McNallys was still a hoot! Cheers!

Hans,
well put, my thoughts exactly!
The Tulsa was a fiasco but it still is THE Forward Look event I will remember forever - the good (people, cars, Miss. Belvedere and the drive across USA from LA to Tulsa) and the bad (organizing).
I am happy the cover was saved and not trashed like the skid probably is - and like the Belvedere probably will be . It would be great item to display in any museum.
Nice to hear from you Hans.

Hey, Hans!

"Destined" for a dumpster is NOT the same as "recovered" from a dumpster.

Typically, articles placed into a trash receptacle are considered to be abandoned (and eligibe for freestyle Dumpster Diving) .

It's understandable why Mr. 5-Finger-Discount-Guy mightn't not have wanted to draw attention to himself, or to The Shroud, when he 'obtained' possession of it, but, he should have approached The City, to get a proper sales-receipt of it, in order to avoid possible allegations of alleged Felony Theft (as evidenced by his efforts to 'fence'; I mean: "sell" the Shroud for $1,000.00) .

Thanks for the kind words Jan! It was nice to meet you in Tulsa. Maybe we'll bump into each other somewhere closer to home the next time? My trip was financially the worst investment ever but it was a good investment in myself, lol!

Well, yeah, OK. Technically I am all with you. I was not present when the rescue went down so I can not say anything regarding those circumstances. But this world is far from perfect and the cover is at least safe. I am sure that the present caretaker could be worked with if the cover would be destined to a worthy environment. At least this is my understanding, he seems to be a good guy not in it for greed.

What I can say is that I had three 1957 Imperials stolen (and other cars, NOS parts, long rams etc) by a storage place in Oregon and no one cares. I have little faith in the law anymore. To me it seems absurd that anyone from the law enforcement would be interested in the cover. A civil case would be different of course. I would rather sue the city of Tulsa for negligence though...

Amazing how much you guys got around with...did not even know about the Orbitron thing, amazing find! Hopefully there are more trips like ours in the future too, if I wasn't so poor I'd be doing a couple of roadtrips every year!

Regarding Reverend Horton Heat, it must be a Ford thing?;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T0JiDcASPk&feature=related

LOL. I'll be adding some pics of the Ford convention in Tulsa soon. I'll let Marc know when I do it so he can forward the link to you.

And yeah, someone go and check out what the deal with the car is please.

Altho I, and others, arrived in T-Town on TUES, I really wish that I/we could have had at least one more day, in town, to
socialize, before (having to) depart on SUN.

McNally's would definitely have been on our agenda, as well as a driving tour, maybe, to Stroud.

Our group didn't hit Tulsa until WEDNESDAY... and we still took the opportunity to visit Stroud.
A good time was indeed had by all in attendance at the Best Western dinner buffet.
Kudos to David Ball for putting that event together for us!
