1959 Rare Chrysler 8 Door Custom Limo (Imperial?). An excessively rare 1959 Chrysler 8-door custom automatic drive limousine (Imperial?). Originally out of Hollywood, California and the present owners state it was first owned by Desilu Studios to transport actors and equipment out to location shooting sites. Was sold to someone in Detroit and eventually arrived in Philadelphia, where it now resides. Vehicle is approximately 25 feet long and most likely had been specially built by Armbruster & Company. 8-cylinder engine. Engine has been replaced and carries 41,140 miles on the odometer. Engine in running condition. All original windows and body, all intact. Original seats, in nice condition. Tires most likely need replacing from sitting. Dashboard controls complete, but lacking radio and front and back speakers, which were removed. Presently garage-kept, with gray primer-ed paint, ready to be restored. Imagine the Desilu Hollywood actors and actresses who rode around in this, perhaps Lucy herself. For more pictures Click Here and Here and Here

That is a cool limo, Nate,

I wonder if it is using Imperial suspension and underpinnings? Check out the wheels-Definitely Imperial, which have there own specific bolt pattern in the Mopar world. ---John

I don't know what Desilu Studios corporate colors were but look at the blue under the hood.  Depending on the lighting or photo shop work to bring out detail in the pics, this may have been Navy blue, and I mean by that it may have belonged to the Dept. of the Navy.  I looked at a similar '58 8door Saratoga in central Illinois some years ago which had belonged to the Navy.  Desilu may have bought it at government auction.

I agree, those are Imperial slotted wheels as used from about '50 through '56 and then again '60 - '64.  The '57-59 wheels were 14" and were not slotted.   So maybe it has had a wheel change since new fifty years ago.

By the way, who got the '57 and '58 airport limo Chryslers out of that largest auto salvage in the world, Turner's, in Fresno, California?

I was only in Turner's three times but on two of those trips in the section of land furthest from the office there was one each of '57 and '58 airport limos.  Somewhere I have print pics of them but I'm quite positive both were 8 door limosines and both had reinforcing luggage racks built onto the roofs which is the way virtually all Stageways were built.   Actually with my question of "who got..." I am presuming that by now someone collected both cars from Turner's.  Maybe they are still there???   I remember a factory red on red '60 Imperial Southhampton coupe that was near both those limos.

Regarding the size of Turner's yard, I remember their business card stating that they were the largest in the world and when they occasionally advertised they stated the same thing.  I've been in a LOT of salvage yards over the decades but none that were even half as large as Turners.  I'm guessing that it covered 80-100 acres of land and had 6-7000 cars and a high percentage of them were collector cars.  Of the counter workers, Jerry was always there and knew the old stuff best and was very friendly.  It was an extremely busy operation with many employees and the phones ringing off the hook.

I wonder if these limos in Turners are the same ones I used to see parked by an old truck stop when I took trips to Fresno as a child to visit family. There were two of them, I know they had fins, and looking back, I am sure that they were some type of Chrysler product( I wasn't all that interested in cars at that time other than 57 Chevys) I had to be about 5 or 6 years old. It seems like one of them was some sort of light green, and the other was black, but I can't be sure of that. The story how Turner started out is interesting, he was and to the best of my knowledge still is a farmer who started to collect cars to restore. At some point he decided he would never get to restore them all, and started to part some of them out, and then just went from there. There is actually an airstrip inside the yard, that is no longer usable, because it is covered with cars. I knew it was a large operation, I did not know it was the largest in the world. For some reason, I rarely go there, you have to be looking for a specific part, you can't just wander out in the yard like you can in smaller operations, they drive you to the part you need if you want to look at it before buying it, in a "junkyard" car, kind of a scary ride.

I missed this post I may be mistaken but the VIN indicates it's a Saratoga, and the 6239th built. They had a Windsor body & New Yorker front clip. Should have been running a 383. Price seemed pretty steep - does anyone know what happened to the listing?

Word has it that Jerry Turner's son that was being groomed to run the business has passed away, and Jerry will be closing the yard for good.

If there is truth to this, the time is now to buy what you were wanting from the yard. ---John

The trunk lid brings up an interesting question: how, and when, was the Toilet Seat attached to the 1959 deck lid?

That's an IMP insert on the T.S.; what year is it 'from' ? 1957-1958?

Is the T.S., itself, the same (appearance) as that of the 59 PLY, or is the insert AND its T.S. removed from an IMP?

I had no idea that 50's IMP wheels looked like this car's wheels !

Regardless of whether the limo was owned by Lucy, it has a lot of collector value by the simple fact that there is photographic proof that Captain Stubing drove it.

Progress has been slow as we've been in the UK & although we're back in NZ at the moment for another couple more months, we're off to live in the US for a few years. Unfortunately, although I love the old cars, I have to put other priorities first. We won't be in a position to actually use it for another 5 years or so anyway, so I'm not too stressed. I've got a 440 & 727 for her & am deciding on the set up so I can start sourcing parts in the hope that some work can be done while we're away. Needs to be reliable, RHD, disc brakes all round, power steering, possibly air bag suspension on rear & ideally using easy to source (in NZ) parts. I've also picked up a sister for her (although another brand so it shall remain nameless )

I haven't been able to find out any history at this stage unfortunately but I need to put a bit more effort in before I go through the process of putting her on the road - it makes a difference in New Zealand if the manufacturer created more than a certain number per annum. Apparently Chrysler did factory stretches but it's hard to get definitive information. I already have RHD dash & inner guards, so the conversion will be relatively straight forward. Her sister (56 Cadillac from Arizona) is a different matter though as they never made RHD versions.

Not sure about the fish reference - these cars are whales (which are mammals)

Will definitely post some pics when there's more progress

First 1958 Chrysler limo. The card looks to be taken at 60'talet and already looks worn out. But very cool model.
Fin 59 saratoga limo, well the one that was white on some older picture?
Can not be easy to get side moldings, when extended Saratogan. Possible that they just took the rear door side moldings 2 times more?

That's a challenge as ours is missing most of the moldings. I think I'll probably just leave them off as fabricating new pieces will be a mission. I've looked at pics of standard 4 door Saratogas and I'm pretty sure they are all custom made apart from maybe front doors. Still, that's the least of my worries at this point

Still, that's the least of my worries at this point :)

Nice Sister
But it was not all Chrysler Air port limos ho has side moldings?
but it's a little empty without side moldings

Interesting, those are all different from the one above but much more practical to source... Must look into that.

Where did you get that info from (I need that opposite page! )? I always suspected it was an Armbruster Stageway conversion but couldn't find any evidence and was also told that Chrysler themselves provided stretched versions. This seems to say it's a bit of both. If it's a Stageway (which seems to be the case), I need to look into how many stretches they produced that year.

Thanks!

That is excellent & definitely what ours is. This will be a huge help for when we go to put her on the road. Unfortunately, due to a lot of other priorities, I only get to look into this now & again but small steps in the right direction is still progress!

Thanks,
Allan
