I've seen several 60 DeSotos with a capacitor mounted externally on the generator. There isn't one on mine. The service manual, parts calog and interchange manual make no mention of it but it is present in the wiring diagram for my car(Between the R2 wire & ground).
Several questions:
- Is this present dependent on the amperage rating of the generator (there was 30, 35 & 40 amp generators listed)?
- Anyone have any idea what the part number may be and where I can get one?
- Am I going to burning up anything without it?

Thanks in advance for the help!

What is the R2 wire, the 12 volt feed?

As I recall, that capasitor serves only for to cut out the disturbing noises from the brushes - if you have a radio you could hear those bussing noises if it's not mounted.

You are correct Wizard. The capacitor (or Condensor as us old far*s call it) was there to keep the AM radio from picking up a high pitched whine from the (You guessed it), Generator!!!! . The whine would increase in pitch, as the rpm's changed----kinda like an "Audio Tacometer"

Some are mounted on the regulator, not generator.

I have one on the generator, one on the regulator and one on the ignition coil, as well as there was also one on the actual radio. The 3 in the engine compartment seems like they always been there, the one on the radio could have been mounted somewhere down the line/years.

The Capacitor IS mounted on the generator as it is on my 59 Dodge
and it filters out noise that will be picked up by the AM radio.
Using newer supressor spark plug wires will reduce the
static as well.

Do you have on on the regulator also, I have a 59 Dodge that has the reg. only suppresor.

No on mine I only have the cap on the generator.... on the regulator the cap wouldnt be as
effective.... you want to put a filtering cap at the souce of the noise.... having both wouldnt
hurt though.... plus all this is for AM radio which mine dosent even work.... I should take it
out and check her out.....

Old thread but I have some new questions about capacitors. I have a capacitor on both my generator and regulator. I seem to recall that one was on the coil also, but I removed it when I installed electronic ignition. Can these be checked with an ohm meter from terminal to ground? What should the resistance be? I checked one and it showed no continuity. My radio has been converted to play FM, usb, and Bluetooth, if my capacitors are bad does it matter since I’m not using AM? (Dennis, are you there?) I’ll still restore the appearance of them and leave them on the car for originality. Thanks

As you write, resore them for the original look only - if you have any disturbances, then add a simple filter on the Radio Power supply. I have one installed that filters both ground and positive leads. Small unit wich is easy to hide away.

The resistance of a capacitor should be infinite if it is working properly. So it sounds like yours *might* be working. You really need to measure its capacitance to determine if it is good or not. I would expect around .5 micro-farad on the generator capacitor should be about right, and around .22 micro-farad on the points condenser. Most multi-meters have the capacity (pun intended) to measure capacitance.

Thanks for the info guys. My multi meter doesn’t have the capacitance function, so I’ll just follow Wizards advice and restore the appearance & see if I have any noise issues.
