Thanks for the info on "carpet". When you found NOS rubber, was it still pliable? I'm afraid that it may have aged on the shelf as bad as mine in the car. It doesn't bend, it cracks!

Surprisingly it was. I went to SMS one day and took a look at a few that he had, still in boxes and they were very brittle. Just lucky for me I suppose.

The 6 cylinder stick shift cars usually got 3.73 gears, wonder if they went down a few ratios to account for the low RPM torque of the diesel. The right gears and a turbo and you'll be in business!

Thanks again for all the help and the ad copy. I had located Chrysler's taxi brochure, but no mention of a diesel being available. Their estimate of top speed seems like an exaggeration. All the fabric for my 60 came from SMS. Took a while to receive it, but it's nice. I'll look for a tag on the rear, or do the old fashioned count the revs for a close guess.

I had a friend who have a '47 DeSoto limo with a 4cyl Perkins diesel (and manual 4 speeds transmission), max speed was around 65-70 kmh (40-45 mph) !!!! Every time he drove the car nobody wanted to be behind the car, cause speed and .... smoke !

This engine really smoked when it ran for the first time in 40 plus years. It died down a little on it's own, I guess as the rings reseated and some of the junk blew out. But it still was visible and burned your eyes! Then I started tweaking the fuel injection pump timing and got the smoke down to almost invisible by advancing it a little. Still smells, but not nearly as much.

Mike:
PM or email me about those diesels. After my experiences with this one, I could use some spare parts!
Thanks

Easy, Ed! Are you thinking of starting your own FL taxi fleet? ha ha

Just kidding, I do like the updates on this rare beast. Thanks for posting!
