There's a '58 Plymouth on e-bay.

1) The colors are correct according to the data plate. What side trim is correct for this car? I'm thinking just the single upper molding piece, without the side cladding?

2) Aren't those seats from a '57 Plymouth?

What else is not correct with this car?

The "3" in the color code designates the sportone aluminum trim.

Did not know the aluminum trim was correct for a car with the top a different color than the body. Thought aluminum trim cars were all the same color?

If '3' designates the aluminum trim, what does '1' and '2' designate?

Agreed on the materials, but the pattern of the vinyl/cloth on the bottom is different then other '58's I've seen.

The seat material is not original. It is probably what the local upholsterer could make look period. The steering wheel is off a 57.

Steering wheel is correct, it's the same that is in my red/black interior '58.

If '3' designates the aluminum trim, what does '1' and '2' designate?

1 - Single colour
2 - Two tone - Roof first colour and body the second
3 - Sport Tone - Roof first colour, body the second and the insert same as the roof

I cannot find anything on how the Belvedere with the silver anodized aluminum insert is laid out.

The seat insert pattern on the seat bottoms are incorrect, should be the same style as the backrest.

That profile is hard to beat. Virgil really brought it all together on this one. An OEM red and white car ? Hoodathunkit !

I would have put skirts on the front wheels too.

My Plymouth dealer info only specifies a '3' for anodized sportone treatment. Don't see anything for '1' or '2'. Seats are sewn incorrectly pattern-wise and insert material is not correct. Lots of overspray. Block and valve covers are incorrectly sprayed red.Trunk lid is also incorrectly sprayed red. Otherwise, this is a nice, correct car that I wouldn't mind owning.

******************************

Here we go again ...

Are you aware that critiqueing and criticizing are two different things ?

Let me explain, .... one would be an informed review of a given subject for quality and content.

The other would be just a caustic smack-down of said subject.

Nowhere in this thread (or so many like this) do I see people doing the latter.

So, what's the defensive, always ****ed and loaded, at the ready response/s about ?

No one is saying this car is a POS. Quite the contrary. Some very informed individuals are pointing out what few historical inaccuracies are present on an otherwise very decent survivor.

Some of us feel a strong sense of responsibility to preserve the knowledge of what is correct to these cars originally. It may not mean we would actually do our own cars perfectly stock, but rather, that we carry forth the information of what was historically correct as the guardians and caretakers of history we are.

It isn't about smack-down. It is about the archival preservation and dissemination of a vanishing knowledge. I want to know what was absolutely correct. Will my car, that COULD NOT be built with a floor shift manual shift, get one ? You bet your biffy it will!

Let's relax and realize we are all amongst friends here.

Take another pull on that cognac breathe a little.

*cheers*

The OP wanted to know what was not factory correct about the car in question. The responses told him so. You are too myopic to see the difference.

Agreed with Dr. DeSoto. I'm considering buying the car and would like to know what's incorrect before I actually make the purchase. I'm a purist and would like the car as it came from the factory, otherwise I'll have to spend more money over and above the purchase price to make the car as it came from the factory.

This post/series is not intended to be a criticism of this car.

To ChryCoMan:

Agreed on the '1' and '2'.

I'm inclined to agree with the others on the '3' for the aluminum trim.

The cars with top and insert of the same color, have the letter for the insert color in the third position, ie: UAU, for a yellow top, black body car with a yellow insert. (I have a car of this color combination, coded UAU. I know the color is correct, as I have the build record from Chrysler.)

The interior is the sedan pattern, and being this car was made by Chrysler corp in 1958 it could be correct , Ive seen many weird interiors in all original cars i once found a 57 savoy 4dr that had 56 Belvedere Asteck material and it was still in the plastic put on in 57 ,Like the rear seat in this car. Chrysler was not one to throw away anything that s why our trunks and hood are painted with the days leftover paint mixed with grey! Thats just my 2 cents worth! HAPPY MOTORING! Victor...

The seat material is not original. It is probably what the local upholsterer could make look period. The steering wheel is off a 57.

The steering wheel is not "off a 57". It is the deLuxe steering wheel option available on 57 and 58 Plymouth.
The green paint on the driver's side of the trunk floor is typical of what you would see on the whole of the trunk floor under the underseal. This color varied from car to car, and could be found under the trunk and hood also, as well as on the floor inside and underside, and behind all the panels.
Not a bad car really.

If that is not the original cloth insert, it is an excellent match. In my opinion, that is either NOS material or a good NORS. If it were my car, I would be somewhat inclined to go with Victor's observation as opposed to changing the pattern to match what might be expected in a '58 Plymouth hardtop.

If I were serious about buying the car, I would also ask about the carpet and heel pad. Was the original carpet for this car cut-pile? I would just make sure it wasn't loop or something very different. It is always nice to have an orignal heel pad, but that would not stop me from buying.

If you are a stickler for correctness, the antennae need to be dealt with (the back two should go) - that would be a pain to do.
It looks like it has a bellows for a winshield washer, but no reservoir or jiffy jet bag.
I would get rid of the aftermarket radio and speakers - another pain.
Needs a correct trunk mat too.

I'd lose the skirts and drive it until it needed a paint job, .... all the while searching the Christine crowd for someone who wanted to swap an OEM red/white set of tags for an interesting color combo. The rest is just details.

Talking about the steering wheel, you see the black hand grips on the 3 and 9 posotion. At a car show this past saturday an old timer was looking at my car and looking at my wheel which is white with the black grip parts, he told me they made them like that because of the mechanics hands would always leave the steering wheel black after he worked on the car and moved it. I dont know if that is true but was interesting. You always get all kinds of theories from the old timers when they look at your car.
