The large back window was optional on Windsor and Saratoga for 1959, standard on New Yorker and 300-E

Hi Morgan

The smaller rear window is probably more common on Windsors, at least in original production. Its hard to say how many would be left, of each type.

Here's what I believe is the production sequence for the Golden Lions on the doors / rear quarters : ( have photos of all three of the following types - three distinctly different installations of the lion and gold crowns )

On USA production WINDSORS, the early production cars had the Golden Lion on the rear quarters with three small gold crowns on the front door under the dip. ( this would be like the pale green car in the photo above ) Later production cars had the Golden Lion on the door in place of the 3 small crowns, like the cream / red colored car that has the auto club decal and plate on the trunk lid rear. On Canadian Production cars, there was NO golden lion, and all production had the 3 small gold crowns on the front door under the dip. The black car pictured below is a Canadian Windsor, with only the small gold crowns on the door, and no Lion on the rear.

I can't tell on your car whether it has the Golden Lion on the door - Your car is very similar to the other cream / red car in the photograph I submitted above, the one with the auto club plates on the rear.

Well, that confirms it - there's indeed enough FLs in Sweden for everyone and their brothers & cousins.

Wonder what the FL ratio is between Sweden & the US nowadays?

For 59 Dodge Convertibles, It is "Even Steven" 11 in the US and 11 in Sweden--alto When Kent gets his done, it will be 11 - 12.
I think they have us out numbered on most the FL convertibles there, Particualarly the Senior 57-58 Desoto Convertibles and probably
59 Soto ragtops too.

Hi Eric! Do you have a 4 door ht with big rear window?

There were no Sky High rear windows on any four doors from 57-59. 1960 was the first year for the large rear windows, which were standard on Phoenix, Polara, New Yorker, Adventurer and Fury four door hardtops, optional on Windsor and Saratoga Sedans and 4 door hardtops, and optional on Belvedere, Matador and Fireflite 4 door hardtops. These large rear windows were used through 1964 on the Dodge 880s but were optional on some, standard on others. By 1962 the only Chrysler with the large rear window was the New Yorker 4 door HT, ( USA built ) and not even optional on the Newport or 300 4 door hardtops, but they were standard on Canadian built 1962 Windsor and Saratoga 4 door hardtops. It can get pretty confusing.

Yes, yours would be, as the sedans in 79-59 used a completely different roof than the four door hardtops, and therefore, different rear windows. For the two door hardtops, 57-59 there were two sizes of rear windows, standard and " Sky-High" ) - the Sky-High window was as high as the top rear of the roof, like the cars pictured above. The standard rear window was more like the four door hardtop rear window on your car. There were NO Sky-High 4 door hardtop rear windows during the 57-59 period. However, starting in 1960, the four door sedans and four door hardtops used the same rooflines, with two different rear windows available - standard and sky-high. Hope this clears it up. See pictures below of 1960-62 standard and sky high rear windows on four door hardtops. Also starting in 1960, all 2 door hardtops received a high rear window, there was no low rear window available as per 1957-1959 2 door hardtops.

Neil, you're probably right, that some manufacturer likely used the same glass front and rear at some point in history. One interesting bit of trivia in the same vein is that 1963 Chryslers used the same bumper on front and rear. 1964 Chryslers which were very similar to 63s, used a completely new front bumper, while the rear was the same as that used in 63 on front and rear.

And the rear under bumber at Chrysler 59 is not same as DeSoto 59. The Desoto is 1-2 inch shorter at the side.

Minor correction: For U.S. built 1960 DeSotos, all 4dr Sedan and 4dr Hardtop Adventurers got the large rear window. All 4dr Sedan and 4dr Hardtop Fireflites got the smaller back window. It was not an option for the Fireflite. If you see an '60 Adventurer with the small window, it was a Canadian model. All Canadian 4dr Sedan Adventurers have the small back window.

imopar380 - 2009-11-05 11:10 AM

Minor correction: For U.S. built 1960 DeSotos, all 4dr Sedan and 4dr Hardtop Adventurers got the large rear window. All 4dr Sedan and 4dr Hardtop Fireflites got the smaller back window. It was not an option for the Fireflite. If you see an '60 Adventurer with the small window, if was a Canadian model. All Canadian 4dr Sedan Adventurers have the small back window.

Slim thanks for the correction.

I must say after all pics, what fun that owners of Chrysler in 1959, found each other here. 59 model is so beautiful. I've collected or saved on the images of the Chrysler 59 (Windsor, Saratoga, New Yorker, E 300), I will probably be posting some pictures during the 59 Chrysler album pictures. The rest of you might have some pictures? that others would like to take some out, type reference? What do you think?
