Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | This is the '58 I would have liked to bid on... I even have relatives in Spencer Iowa, but couldn't get there at the time. As i recall it was sold for around 6 or 7 K to Minnesota, then resold a short time later, on eBay? I guess to Sweden, my ancestors country (Andersson). Glad to hear it will be left alone and not restored, they are only original once! Edited by firedome 2009-11-06 11:16 AM

Expert Posts: 1295 Location: Nasco , SWEDEN | It´s My Brother Ronnie who own this car now, he is very proud of it! your story is correct. Mr Layton won the auction, little did he know that the engine was dead. he then sold it to my brother who happened to be at the right place at the right time! we hauled the car to a Buddy in Stanton LA. He rebuild the complete engine to factory specs and put a new exhaust system on it. fixed the brakes and gastank. otherwise it´s original exept for a good cleaning and polish and new tires! it´s a spring edition! we have partisipated on several crusings and met no other like it! Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Yes it's a '58 Spring Special, they had the extra chrome strips on the trunk and silver foil on the sidde sweep ala Adventurer. Also 3 new colors were introduced for Spring: Heather Blue, Persimmon Red, and Spring Rose... I think this car is Persimmon Red, which looks very close to Autumn Rust. If I recall correctly, the auction catalog stated the engine was locked up and/or needed a rebuild, so it shouldn't have been a surprise to the first buyer... Note this car has non-bellows brakes. I think most 'Sweeps may have had this type also - any other empirical evidence out there? One thing I'm not wild about on '58s is the all silver engine, looks kinda plain to me, I may paint mine Chrysler Golden Lion red and gold. Edited by firedome 2009-11-07 11:56 AM

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Well, since the engine block has been repainted, I guess that the entire compartment could/should get to be fully refinished, too. An all-OEM-original engine compartment would have been, and is, a rare sight. 57 Dodges didn't have, or need, those hose clamps on the power brake vacuum can, or on the booster-connection.

The Spring Special bars are these little vertical dudes down low. In 59 Adventurer got full length anodized aluminum inserts, but in 58, only the little dart insert at the very back got it. Spring Special accessories / trim did not come as a "package", but were available piece by piece. Many cars came in Spring colors, but without the added trims. The decklid bars are quite rare. The sweep inserts, rarer still.

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | No, unrestored Herters aren't too expensive, probably 1-2K$ depending on what needs to be done... a friend of mine used to have 2 but I'm not sure if he still has them. There's a guy in one of the boat clubs who has a black and gold 57 FireFlight hardtop and has a Herter's Flying Fish painted to match, and the tailights from a 57 DeS mounted in the fins... looks like it was made that way.. amazing!! There's pics on the net somewhere...

Location: Parts Unknown | Well, in spite of be "Doctor DeSoto", .... a name I coined for my brother when he dragged home the first DeSoto in the family - the 58 Spring Special is a rare and elusive bird, surrounded by much confusion over the random nature of the trim applications on the few cars we know of. I probably know about as much about 57-58 DeSotos as anyone, but this niche is a tough one to nail down ! A LOT more Spring Special Dodges have survived and if their build trends are any indication of how it was done over at DeSoto, the various trim parts / colors were all available piecemeal and there was no set "package". If you liked a Spring Special color, you could order just that, If you wanted the decklid bars, but not the inserts, you could do that too. Of course, one could also go full chamois and get it all .... as it appears this car did. I am aware of two others .... a Fireflite coupe and a Firesweep of some sort that were fully decked, but have never seen them in person. It would be interesting to do some breakdown and see just how these were put together to get an idea how it was done and what is truly OEM. If you look at the trend from 57 to 59 to add more and more glitz, it would not surprise me if the rocker trim first appeared as part of the Spring Special goodies. I think it clashes with the clean lines of the 57-58 design, but times were a-changing and if you look at where DeSoto went for 59, it is easy to see the rocker trim as part of the evolutionary process. Still, I'd like to see an actual parts book document on the package.

Is it to a 4 door or 2 door? firesweep (as miss piggy) has 122" chassie and firedome + fireflite has 126" chassie could be that you have a complete set to a firesweep and one side to a big chassie car such as firedome or flite, dunno if adventurers got this option? any body who knows?

Location: Parts Unknown | Looks like a standard fare deluxe 59 steering wheel to me. But then again, if the standard fare rocker stainless for 59 was a 58 Spring Special intro piece, ......... ? We history detectives need to find the package parts list. If I weren't so $#@! busy racing the snow to get my roof on, I'd go through my parts books again and see if I overlooked something. I do have the entire Regal Lancer package documents, but do not remember ever seeing a comparable DeSoto document. I would think such a list would have piqued my interest for sure, but maybe a more thorough look is in order ? No time for that though. Hard to believe the weather has stayed this nice this long.

Expert Posts: 1357 Location: Iowa USA | Glad I found this thread and I am very glad to see that the car is being cared for. I am sure that this would make Chris happy. He was very proud of the car and told me that he purchased it new. I am glad to see that you have kept the original Iowa plates (058 are the last 3 digits since chris had all of the primary cars license plates match the year of manufacture. I am also glad to see you kept the trailer hitch. He used this car in the 50s and 60s as he gathered the desoto cars from the 30s and 40s for his collection. It was kept in the chicken coop next to the house with the 61 directly in front of it. My personal favorites were the 38 cabriolet and the 58 Ambulance. Of course since I found the Ambulance in Kamrar Iowa and told chris about it since I could not afford it at the time. The Ambulance is still in Spencer and being well cared for also You need to show off the rare factory seat belts and the rare forward look MoPar floor mats in the car.
