Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | polara61 - 2010-04-16 1:18 AM That´s a nice customized car.Or isn´t it? Yes, it is a Garlick special. The Plymouth front end end was put on the car after Garlick purchased it, as well as the Plymouth 'spare tire', all the rear trim, the engine, the interior door panels and the bulk of the options. Sadly, Garlick tried to pass it off as one of three built in Canada for Mexico, even though the VIN clearly showed the car was built in Detroit. Unfortunately for Mr. Garlick, grand total production of 1961 Dodge Polara models in Canada was ZERO. He also claimed most of the 1961 Dodge Polara models built were destroyed by Chrysler as Dodge dealers refused to accept delivery of them. Other little tidbits was the claim he and his "experts" had no idea where the front interior door panels came as well as the extra trim around the headlamps. Both were production Plymouth items. To pass off this nonsense as an April Fool's joke is one thing, but to use it as material to sell the car and to get car mags to publish articles on it, was another thing entirely. It also turned out Garlick had obtained the build record for the car. Again, the build record confirmed the car was built in Detroit, and was shipped to a dealer in Pennsylvania. No mention of Mexico or Canada anywhere on the card. I was astonished at how many people bought into Garlick's story. A perfect example of why the "Never say never" line is just asking for trouble.

Expert Posts: 1295 Location: Nasco , SWEDEN | Here is the Garlik story! 1961 DODGE Super D/500 There is little question that this example is the most rare and unusual model. The Dodge’s that were built for ’61 did not sell well at all. Many of these were shipped back to the factory, and several dealerships actually refused to sell the ‘new for ’61 Dodge’s’. Not surprising, as the design was very controversial, and rumor has it, that the final design was selected from a sketch that was tossed into, and retrieved from the trash can. Also, because of internal management problems at Chrysler Corp., the Dodge styling studio fell behind, and a deadline to ‘get the final Dodge design finished’, was critical, and far behind schedule. However, it is obvious this is the only produced car with ‘backwards’ fins. Just the same, the general public did not like this car at all. There are only a handful of these that exist today. This example, was produced for Mexico delivery, and is unlike the American built units. Actually, it shares similar sheetmetal and interior trim items found on the ’61 Plymouth’s of that year. The idea of half Plymouth / Dodge, was nothing new for Chrysler cars of that era. A Canadian Dodge for example, would look like any other Dodge, but would have been fitted with a full 1961 Plymouth interior. A 1959 Plymouth, for example could be found with a ’59 Dodge front end section, if sold in Canada. This mixing of parts , is a subject all in it’s self. What is most unusual about this Dodge, is that this ‘set up’, was not available for Canada. If fact, the only ’61 Dodge’s built for Canada were the smaller wheel base Dodge Darts. (Phoenix, Pioneer, Seneca). Although not documented, I have been told that this Dodge D/500 was produced for sale in Mexico, in which 3 examples of these were made. Most likely from left over parts. Surprisingly, the only model identification suggests that this is a ‘D/500”, as indicated by a small nameplate at the rear of the car. Normally, an American built ’61 Dodge would also bear this emblem had it been equipped with a high performance V/8 engine package. At first glance, the body rear end section resembles the upscale ’61 Dodge Polara. A “Polara” emblem or identification was not used. The car has undergone an extensive 3 year, (every nut and bolt, rotisserie), restoration. It is highly optioned, including the very high performance , Super D/500 , 413cu in., 400hp “Sonoramic”, long ram engine. Some of the ‘specialty’ options include, a 45 rpm record player, Kelsey Hayes wire wheels, “Flight Sweep” trunk lid wheel, “Tower Back” front seat, “Mirr o Matic” self dimming dash mounted rear view mirror, “Satellite” horizontal (drum style), revolving clock. Dual remote fender mounted mirrors, and twin antennas. The more conventional options include, power steering , brakes, pushbutton Torque Flight transmission, “roof sweep”,(spring edition roof moldings), extra large brakes, dual exhaust, two tone paint, rear defroster, “Astrophonic” radio, padded dash, bumper guards, and factory air conditioning. It was also equipped with an automatic ‘lipstick dispenser’, however, at this time it is under restoration. In retrospect, it is sad that more of these examples can only be found, tucked away in forgotten photographic files. Today, however, the ’61 Dodge is in my opinion, a remarkable example of a time when 1960’s space age travel was still on wheels. Hope you enjoy the photos. Thank You! Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13045 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Actually, I did not notice that this was a "custom" - to me, there's such flows in the lines that it's even better than the Dodge or Plymouts of 61. THIS is the way it should have been designed! I just totally love it - the interior is stunning.

Today, however, the ’61 Dodge is in my opinion, a remarkable example of a time when 1960’s space age travel was still on wheels. Hope you enjoy the photos. Thank You! Best Always, Paul VULCAN, MICHIGAN The story of Paul Garlick and this "Dodge" was covered in some detail a couple of years ago on this forum. The story you quote was NOT the one he presented at that time. It has been cleaned up some, but still contains the lie about the car being destined for Mexico, when in fact he has the build record which shows the car destined for somewhere in Pennsylvania. By the way, Chrysler Mexico assembled CKD units from Detroit. The import duties on fully assembled cars were far more than the duties on the parts to assemble cars. I like the line, "At first glance, the body rear end section resembles the upscale ’61 Dodge Polara. A “Polara” emblem or identification was not used." The rear end IS a Polara, as the car is a Polara with a Plymouth nose. No Polara ID on the rear as the Polara nameplate was put on the FRONT fenders. Also, the stuff about the design being retrieved from a trash can is nonsense. I have seen photos of 1961 Dodge clays, and those rear fenders go back a ways and were even on an early clay that had a semi-fastback roof line. If the wheels were true Chrysler options, by the way, they would be Motor Wheel, not Kelsey-Hayes. Also, Canadian 1961 Plymouths and Dodge Darts used the Plymouth instrument panel with DART interiors, not Plymouth. When this car first came to light, "Hemmings Classic Car" was making inquiries about this car, trying to verfiy the various claims. Needless to say, more than a few Mopar fanatics wrote to HCC and set the record straight. HCC were miffed they had spent over a thousand dollars in photos, etc., but glad they were able to pull the plug on the project before it was too late. Mopar Collectors Guide, however, was not so lucky. They did publish an article on the car and got slaughtered! Why do people make up such nonsense and then try to pass it off as truth? The truth will out and when it does, it only makes everything the story teller says questionable. In this case, Garlick converted a 1961 Polara 2-door hardtop. Replacing the front clip is an easy feat. The doors of the Polara 2-door hardtop were on the 2-door hardtop models of 1960-61 Plymouths, 1960-61 Dodge Darts, 1960-61 Dodge Polaras, 1960 Dodge Matadors, 1962 Chryslers and 1962-64 Dodge Custom 880. The 1962-64 front clips will not fit the 1960-61 cowl as Chrysler made some changes. They almost fit. There is a fellow on the web with a yellow 1961 Dodge Polara hardtop to which he has attached the nose from a 1961 Chrysler Newport. So, take Garlick's story for what it is - a fairy tale. If you do spread the story about the car, just make sure you state that it is only a fairy tale.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Going back to Paul Garlick's car, for a moment; Hemmings Classic cars said that it had invested over TWO thousand dollars in preparing to publish the Garlickmobile in its pages, and one person, in particular, over on our website's Daily List Server (not me) gets credit for busting Paul's efforts, with HCC, at the very-last minute, to get some legitimacy for this thing. I met Paul, in 1987, at a MoPar show in Fountain Hills, AZ, and Paul is a very friendly person; he was just, then, completing his 'renovation' of his having taken a white/blue 61 Polara 361 convertible, and creating a 383 red/red "D500" out of it, with its back-story, then, of ("possibly"-) having been owned by a 'manager' of Marilyn Monroe. The story on the car's ownership eventually morphed into its having been "owned" by M.M. , with the car eventually acquiring 15" wire wheels, and reportedly touring the country along with John Lennon's Bentley, in a "Cars of the Stars" production. Paul definitely knows and loves his 61 Dodges, and his work-execution is at least the equal of any Swede (high praise). I personally love his hot rod, with the exception of its Toilet Seat deck lid, and I'm not real 'wild' about its dual antennae, but, maybe they'd look OK without the rear deck 'treatment'. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7206 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | OK How about this - a Canadian Produced 1960 Phoenix Sport Suburban -built for the Canadian market. No Phoenix wagons were built in the USA. The phoenix body side mouldings would not fit on the rear quarter panel with the higher fender openings of the wagons which were all on the Matador-Polara 122" WB. Hence, this Phoenix Sport Suburban has Polara body side trim, Polara tail lights but has a Dart grille. Also being Canadian it has a Plymouth dash board and upholstery. This car in Canada filled the gap where there was no Matador wagon. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7206 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Bill, thanks for posting some Canadian 60 Dodge literature. What is interesting, that in the USA there were two different owners manuals for 1960 Dodge, one for Matador/Polara and another for the Dart Series. In Canada there was only one owners manual that covered them all, and it was very old fashioned looking compared to the US owners manual, looked like it was designed in 1950. And the Canadian owners manual listed four models, Seneca, Pioneer, Phoenix and Polara. Nowhere in the manual does it refer to the Seneca, Pioneer and Phoenix as "DARTS". When I first owned my former 60 Polara, I was at a shopping plaza one day, and spied a nice looking Pioneer Sedan. I didn't have the Polara with me but was only 5 minutes away. The owner of the Pioneer came out of a store, so I started a conversation and I mentioned I also owned a 1960 Dodge, a Polara. He then started to tell me how his Pioneer was a very exclusive high end model, and that it may have been the only one left in Canada ( this was about 1978 ). I said, wait 5 minutes and I'll go and get mine to show you. When I arrived his jaw dropped when he saw the bigger Polara four door hardtop with a full load of options - power windows, power seat, automatic dimmer, etc., compared to his plain Jane Pioneer which he thought was pretty exclusive! He didn't say much after that - I guess I upstaged him, being young and foolish... I could have handled it a little better, in hindsight. I have the 1961 Canadian Dodge Owners Manual and it does not mention Dart either. The illustrations are quite interesting, the one for the turn signals showing a 1956 steering wheel and changing tires is done with photos for a 1951-52 Plymouth. The 1962 Dodge manual does mention Dart, Dart 330 and Dart 440 on the instrument panel illustration, although the "Switch - Tailgate Glass" is listed as (*Savoy and Belvedere) (Suburban Only) and the Cigar Lighter is shown as optional on the Savoy. Looking for a 1962 Plymouth manual to see if the labelling is the reverse. Illustrations are the same as 1959 and 1961, except for the instrument panel details, grille, and taillights. Also the rear door locks which in 1962 show the same illustration as used in 1956. Chrysler of Canada published one owners manual for all four makes for many years. I have the 1957 edition, and know for 1959 each make got their own manual. Do know about 1958, though. The page for information on getting service while on your trip through the U.S. had a 1953 Chrysler New Yorker travelling through the desert in the 1954 to 1959 issues, complete with A/C intake on the rear fenders. Don't know if it was in the 1960 manual. A/C was not a factory installed option on Canadian-built Chryco cars until the 1960's. There are a couple of Phoenix sedans in the Vancouver area. Ran into the owner of one of them and listened to the stories someone who claimed to have worked at the Windsor plant when the 1960 models were built. The fellow told the owner the engine in his car was rare as it had a harder cast iron than normal and that his car was very rare with few built. Actually, 837 Phoenix V8 sedans were built and was the most popular Phoenix model in Canada. Your Polara 4-door hardtop was one of 285 built in Canada while Chrysler Canada built 2,255 Pioneer 6 and 2,244 Pioneer V8 sedans. Most times people who claim to be in the know tell the owner what he wants to hear - his car is rare and was built with special this and special that. It may have been harsh to upstage the owner of the Pioneer sedan, but better now than what will happen when he tries to sell it. See that all the time on eBay and Craigslist, people trying to sell cars with overblown descriptions.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7206 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Bill that Pioneer Sedan incident was back around 1978 ! The guy was old then, probably dead now, no idea what happened to the car ! Thanks for the production figures on the Canadian Polara 4 door hardtop. The only figure I knew for sure was that only 1276 Polaras of all body styles were built in Canada. Total US and Canada production for 60 Polara was a measly 16,278. Where do you get Canadian production records from ?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7206 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | * Dart Phoenix models were not officially built as station wagons in the USA, but production records indicate that at least the small amount shown here (Total 320) were actually assembled. One source (Mr. Gregory Mansell), confirmed by Bill Watson, of Vancouver, BC, Canada says that these wagons were built specifically for the Canadian market, since there was no happy medium between a lower priced Pioneer wagon and the upmarket Polara hardtop wagon. Since the Matador was not available in Canada, the solution was to badge this wagon as a Phoenix. Unfortunately, all Dart wagons, like Matadors and Polaras, were built on the 122 inch wheelbase. The rear fender opening on the 122" w.b. cars was several inches HIGHER than the fender opening on the non-wagon Darts, which were built on the 118" w.b. The double molding with the bright trim insert used on Phoenix cars, therefore, could not be applied to the wagons, as there was not enough room above the fender opening because the horizontal ridge where the mouldings were applied was too close to the top of the fender for it to fit. This was not a problem with either the Seneca or Pioneer wagons, as they did not use this double moulding with the bright aluminum insert. The solution: These Canadian Phoenix wagons had Polara / Matador side trim and taillights installed, and were dubbed "Phoenix Sport Suburbans"! These photos are taken from a Canadian brochure. You can confirm this is a Dart by the script on the tailgate which matches the written "Dodge" script on the Darts. On Matador and Polara, "Dodge" was spelled out in block letters on the tailgate. The frontal shot shows the Dart grille installed on what would otherwise be a Matador Wagon. The interior is straight out of a Plymouth. Note the red lenses in the fins - these were not available on production models - a chrome insert was placed in the area as it was too hard to get into the area to replace bulbs. ** 2 Door Sedan, 122 inch wheelbase models were not officially built, but the 1960 Dodge Police Pursuit Brochure shows artists renderings of them, and production records indicate that at least TWO Matador 2 door sedans were built. Below is a factory photo of one of these rare cars. The Police Pursuit cars on the 122 inch wheelbase also carry Dart grilles. No model names appeared on the body of the car, but we assume they were Matadors as per production records. *** Production totals include Canadian models. As of this writing, we have no breakdown of model production between countries, other than there were only 1,276 Polaras built in Canada, in all body styles. Any 1960 Dodge convertibles sold in Canada were imported from the USA. **** All 1960 Dodge wagons were built on the 122 inch wheelbase. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7206 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Bill, do you have any idea if any Canadian 1960 Dodges were built with the four-bar spinner wheel covers? The standard non spinner wheel cover on Canadian 60 Dodges, while it looked similar to the US wheel cover, was actually smaller. The US 60 Dodge wheel cover, both standard and spinner types, extended over the edge of the rim to the tire. Canadian wheel covers had the usual half-inch gap on the outside, showing the painted rim. Yup, I'm hung up on all this trivial stuff ;-)
