Hey Mike -

Here ya go:

This is an EARLY-built Los Angeles 8-cylinder Dodge Coronet 2dr HT. Original color was single-tone silver with a black and white Custom Coronet snowflake pattern interior. The M2 and M4 stuff I never quite figured out. Probably option groups 3 and 9. Clear pictures of the interior, exterior and engine would be extra-helpful.

Ron

Ron your're on target with this one.

This car is a Coronet Lancer 2 door Hardtop, equipped with the D500 package - engine and suspension, power
steering & brakes, padded dash plus Air level ride.

It seems to be a predecessor to the late 60s Muscle cars - base model, hi -peformance engine & handling package

PM sent to Ron.

Mike, that's a single-4 D500 you own.

You should go check out the IBM card-copy ordering information on your car, as discussed on the Sticky Message, at
the top of this message board.

And THEN, post up the IBM card, here!

Neil.

I will take your advice and obtain a copy of the IBM card for my car.

I note your comments in relation to the white Super D in NY that it is not equipped with the H/Duty Suspension.

I thought the D500 package included the H/Duty suspension and Brakes - is this not so?

My D500 has a significantly larger diameter stabiliser than my 59 Royal so i have assumed it is equipped with the H/Duty suspension as part of the D500 option.

Can you or other members elaborate on what was included as part of the D500 4 BBL and Super Dual 4 BBL options for 1959?

Thanks, Mike

Mike, Myth Busters, here....nah, the D500 was just simply an engine option deal.

Now, a knowledgeable person, or dealer, COULD order a car with the HD or the"Export springs" and the
biggest Nylon tires that were available, and/or with the 1958+ Sure Grip differentials, and the bigger brakes,
too, but these items are/were extra cost options that were available on every car, regardless of D500 status.

In 1959--IIRC--the stabilizer bar was only available as an extra cost item--it was included with the Export Springs
option group, and, as standard-equipment on the Police Pursuit car-package

I'm surprised that your Royal has a sway bar, too--have you ordered the Royal's Birth Certificate/Pedigree as well?

The single-4 barrel Carter carburetor, non-D500 was 2794S

The single-4 Police Special carb was 2854S

The Single-4 D500 carb was/is 2794S

The Super D500 ft carb is/was 2790S and the rear carb is/was 2791S

As far as I know, the 1959 single-4 383 c.i. D500 engine was internally identical to the other Corporate 383's which have 10.0:1
c.r. ; 4.25"x 3.38" bore/stroke, 320 HP, engines.

It will be neat to see both your Coronet's and Royal's Broadcast Sheet information.

Reality check . . .

Neil brings up a good point about the D500 being an engine-only upgrade. In fact the basic D500 package in 58/59 was an extremely modest upgrade . . like maybe 10-15 HP over the "regular" B block.

You DO get the kool emblems and the drool factor. But there is more additional energy expended through the collective hot air of D500 owners/sellers, than in the ten additional horses of a D500 engine.

(This coming from someone who would kill to get his hands on one.)

But, them are GROSS horsepower differences.....don't forget about the secret initiation ceremonies and handshakes, Sparky.

Actually, the 1958-59 Dodge D-500 engine is less than that. It is the same engine as used in the 1958-59 DeSoto Fireflite.

1958 Dodge D-500 :
361-cid; 10.0:1 CR 1 4-bbl carb (AFB-2642S); 305 bhp @ 4600 rpm; 400 @ 2800 rpm torque

1958 DeSoto Fireflite :
361-cid; 10.0:1 CR 1 4-bbl carb (AFB-2642S); 305 bhp @ 4600 rpm; 400 @ 2800 rpm torque

1959 Dodge D-500 :
383-cid; 10.1:1 CR 1 4-bbl carb (AFB-2794S); 320 bhp @ 4600 rpm; 420 @ 2800 rpm torque

1959 DeSoto Fireflite :
383-cid; 10.1:1 CR 1 4-bbl carb (AFB-2794S); 325 bhp @ 4600 rpm; 425 @ 2800 rpm torque

As the 1959 Fireflite and D-500 shared all interior pieces, including camshaft, the 5 extra in bhp and torque is the fabrication of the same people that created the Imperial Division - the marketing and advertising people. Also, I suppose the DeSoto people were not too happy the Dodge engine was just as powerful as the DeSoto engine in 1958. Thus in 1959 either the Dodge was lowered 5 or the DeSoto raised. Or both were drawn from a bunch of numbers in a hat.

As far as engine horsepower, and maybe/probably, torque ratings, are concerned, the former president of the WPC Club,
Sherwood Kahlenberg, confirmed, at several national meets, that from his discussions with several engineering types, the
corporate horsepower ratings were fabricated by the engineering department, to suit the Executives' advertising
ambitions, and, as Bill states, WERE 'drawn from a hat' !

There, obviously, was a much-needed Pecking-Order between the advertised horsepower ratings among the economical strata of the Corporation.

I'd LOVE to know what the gross (at end of crankshaft) HP rating REALLY was, of the 1957 Dodge D501 race car!

Officially, it was a laughable 340 HP, the same rating as the 56 300B, but, the 501 had a lot of upgrades
and almost certainly was more powerful than the standard 57 300C engine, and, probably, the bally-hood 375HP optional 300C variation.

But, let's not get into a pissing contest, about which engine was more powerful....and agree that there WAS an arbitrary horsepower Pecking Order, in place, in proportion to the cost of the car(s).
