I don't mind customizing cars at all - in fact, I never owned a "stock" "factory" car ever - prob never will - BUT, cutting the fenders down just doesn't seem right -

AS a reminder, Craigslist ads, and ads in general, have a short life. If there is something worthy of discussion here, y'all might as well copy the advertisement and the pics so someone talking about this in the future now can find it all. Just a thought.

Anyone else think those fins were cut down in the ealy/mid 1960s? Fins were so dumpy by the mid '60s that some owners decided to "update" the car with shrunken fins. Imperials made the most sense because they were still worth something and an owner might have been willing to spend a little for some bodywork on a car he still liked to drive.

A few years ago my friend found a 1961 Chrysler 300G convertible. It was a high milage car that was a one owner car. The owner had died and the family was selling it. The original owner loved the car and drove it all those years. In the mid 60s he decided the fins looked dated so he took the car to a local auto body shop and had the fins taken off, completely! They even changed the doors to smooth 1962 doors. Since the tail lights in the 61 are in the lower valence and not the fins it worked out ok. The car looked "different" but ok,, Naturally once my friend got a hold of it he quickly found a doner car and did a transplant!!

it's hard to believe that there once was a time when people didn't want fins!
But your right,in the late 60's and 70's nobody liked these cars or wanted to be seen driving one...fins were out of fashion!
Thankfully some folks hung unto them and saved them until they became appreciated again.

Wade, is the 300-G you mentioned formerly the late John Hertog's car "Re-Fin"?
I can't seem to find any pictures of it right now, but have seen a few of the car without fins, and ones of the replacement fins being reattached - and the restored result.
Anyone got any pics of that car to post? It was an interesting car without the fins - not exactly 1961 , nor a 1962.

I figured it might be John's car you're speaking of, since you're on Long Island, and John lived on the west end of L.I., in Sag Harbor.

John, Yes, that was John Hertog's car. I used to have pictures but lost them when my hard drive burned. As I remember after ho posted the car with one fin replaced,, there was a whole bunch of very funny "Photoshoped" pics with all sorts of other fins grafted to the car. John was a very good friend, I miss him. He knew more about Mopars than anyone I know.

I've never really liked the fins on the 60- 61 Imperial comared to the smooth flowing fin lines on the 57-59 Imps, ... and IMHO this one looks a little better wit them shaved down, but......now of course it would be better if had been left stock. This one looks more like the 62-63 Imps - which have the same basic body with the fins shaved down.

The fins do look to have been cut-down professionally.

What is striking, is that that work was done (PAID-for; unless it was done as being a hobby project), at all, because all
cars depreciated quickly, back then, so that there would have been little/no profit-motive involved, by the car's owner, in doing this considerable renovation work on this car, unless the owner figured that the ONLY way to sell this car was to cut-down its fins....

The fins were probably left on the car, because the tail lights are unique, and had to be attached to SOME part of the car.

If I were having this job be done, I'd have had the fins be rendered in a straight line, instead of appearing to droop downward.

Hi,
I have never posted photos here before, how can I copy the whole craigslist ad with photos like you did?

It's easy. First, you need to save the Craigslist photos to you computer. Then start a thread here on Frwdlk.net. Copy and paste the text from the Craigslist ad. Be sure to also copy & paste the url link so we can find the ad. Then check the box at the bottom to "attach a file after posting". It then takes you to a new screen where you add your photos.

Try it in the "test" forum.

I'm quite certain that was a misnomer made in jest. I don't think anyone here actually knew the owner. Now that 10 yrs have gone by, there really is no surefire way of tracking down a solitary craigslist seller.

Sorry dude,
Peter

If this was a red G convertible, I saw this car at the Chrysler 300 Club Inc. Spring Meet in the Mt. Pocono, PA in 1977. I have a photo of it, and I thought it looked terrible!

You might try the phone number listed in the ad I copied -

"call me at 848-0011 * Location: east / central"

The ad was from the Austin, Texas area code 512.

Who knows if after 11 years the same person has that number - it's worth a try if you're serious. Good luck!
