Location: Parts Unknown		I have seen a lot more NY'ers and Windsors that Saratogas. To find two in the same body style and colors is
no small feat. There is little to fault in any of the 57 -58 Chrysler-DeSoto big body designs. They were utterly
stunning. The top photo showing the curved-over headlight/fender profile is about my favorite design "bit" on
these cars. Very feline in form. I would love to know the origins of this detail. Such a classic period color does
nothing to hurt the looks ! I just love the different interiors and fabrics. There never was a better time in new
car design !!!!

Location: Chippewa Lake, OH		Gorgeous car! Makes me miss mine even more. I loved that car, it was originally black with a turquoise roof and insert. If I'm not mistaken, this car looks like the color is "Indian Turquoise".

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada		Apparently the 57 Saratogas had three different cloth upholstery materials, the sedan used a different material from this type that was kind of a "satellite" styled pattern, but for the hardtops I've seen the type used on this car and a also different type of cloth in several Saratoga hardtops. I wonder if there was a running change - I have photos at home - will try to post them later. The 57's are certainly a good looking car especially the Saratoga sweeping side trim. This was the optional trim.

Anyway, I've seen both interior schemes and greatly prefer the Sara's interior scheme to that of the Duke's/Castle's
(which IS it, btw: Duke of Windsor, or Windsor Castle...Windsor, ONT?)

Un-believable that you found another same-color-pattern car, as its predecessor.

That's the HU-mongo generator, too----any idea why it was installed in the car.

And, its got the HD radiator---Export items???

You might check out its torsion bar numbers and count its leaf springs---7 of them?

I've always thought the Windsor was named in honour of the Chrysler Canada plant in Windsor, ON... my best guess. In Canada Chrysler continued to use the name Windsor until 1966, on the model that was badged as the Newport in the USA.

The Chrysler line up in 1937 was Royal, Imperial and Custom Imperial. The Windsor, named after the British Royal family, fits right into the theme. Virtually every American knew of the Windsor name after the abdication crisis of 1937, with King Edward VIII vacating the throne for the hand of an American divorcee and taking the title of the Duke of Windsor.

And New Yorker and Saratoga were considered upper class names back in the late 1930's, Saratoga being a summer haunt of the rich in New York state. Ingrid Bergman? "Saratoga Trunk"?

The Saratoga was always priced above the Windsor, but in 1939 and 1940 it was priced above the New Yorker. The series below the New Yorker in 1939 was the Imperial, which became the Traveler for 1940 and, finally, the Saratoga for 1941. The 1939-40 Saratoga came as a 4-door sedan with or without a glass partition behind the driver's seat. The 1941 version was based on the New Yorker Town Sedan and sold as the Crown Imperial Special.

1939 to 1950 Chrysler Saratoga models used Chrysler's 323.5-cid straight eight and adopted the 331-cid hemi V8 for 1951. The 1951 Saratoga was now based on the Windsor (125½" wheelbase) instead of the New Yorker (131½" wheelbase). The first Canadian-built Saratoga, and the first Canadian-built 8-cylinder Chrysler since 1937, appeared for 1952. For 1953 the Saratoga became the New Yorker and what was the New Yorker, the New Yorker Deluxe. The 1952-52 Saratoga came only with the 331-cid hemi V8, and in all body styles. The Saratoga reappeared for 1957, in the U.S. anyway.

One little quirk for 1957-58. Chrysler of Canada built only Windsor sedans and hardtops in 1957-58, both years based on the 126" wheelbase, and imported the Windsor wagons and all New Yorker and 300-letter models. And to break the boredom, the Canadian 1957-58 Chrysler Windsors were actually Chrysler Saratogas with "Windsor" nameplates. The Canadian 1957 Chrysler Windsor was model C75-2 and the 1958 LC2, same as the U.S. Saratoga.

In 1961 Chrysler in the U.S. introduced the lower-priced Newport to replace the DeSoto and dropped the Saratoga. In Canada, the Windsor and Saratoga names continued, with the Windsor still pushing the luxury aspect with wheel covers, back up lights and Torqueflite all standard equipment.

In 1965 and 1966 the Newport had a standard and optional cloth and vinyl upholstery choices. The Canadian Windsor only offered the optional Newport selection and thus was priced above the Newport. The last Canadian-built Windsor was built in 1966 and, in reality, became the Newport Custom for 1967.

Always thought that these two ads were interesting, in
their own rights, as CHY was at least somewhat interested
in promoting a Sportive nature of their 'lesser' models.

Note how the 57 Windsor (in the first ad---that's not the
"Dodge" version of it, either) was replaced by the 58 Sara,
and, also, here's a nice 57 Sara ad...

Hmmm...the Dodge-versions of the Windsor began in 1958?

Location: Parts Unknown		Yes, Chrysler sold the Windsor out in 58 for the Firesweep kind of hybrid with the Dodge chassis and nose that DeSoto started in 1957.

That middle ad with the single side spear Saratoga .... that is a very striking car and one I have never seen in 30+ years of looking.
Note the odd little shield on the rear quarter. Saratogas never sold very well through the FL years. I guess people opted up for the NY'er
or went low for the Windsor ? Whatever the reasons, this particular car must be a very rare bird !

Location: Nasco , SWEDEN		I believe the color is called "SATURN BLUE" not deadsure because we have not exported "Her" to Sweden yet, just eyeballing her on the datascreen! The nice one in the start of the thread is saturn blue! But interior was a "tuck´n´roll" style with home made pressings of chrysler sign! pic´s are not necessary. but for all data guys it had a 392 hemi ! not the polymotor! i attached a pic of what i believe is a seafom color The Black car in the ads above is a 1958 model

Location: bishop, ca		Heh, heh; Morgan; you mean the SECOND/lower car; that FIRST/upper car is a 1957 Windsor.

Chrysler copied this white-over-black body style into 1958. but, because the 58 Windsor was a 'Dodge',
Chrysler decided to make this clean-version a Saratoga, in 1958.

That's why I collected both versions of this car-ad, in 1957 and in 1958 !

It will be very interesting to see what the IBM card has to say about your Sara's heavy-duty equipment
that is on it!

1957 Windsor cut-off the view of the end of the fin, which has the "Windsor" nameplate on it.

There's no accounting for emotional-taste, but the new owner of the Sara did NOT do its image any favors,
with those modern-mag wheels that he put onto it----on the OTHER hand:.... he demonstrates WHAT the addition
of wire wheels/wide-whites can do to IMPROVE the image of a car!!!!

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada		I found photos of the different upholstery materials used in 57 Sartogas. The first one below is the sedan with what I call " satellite styled cloth"

The second one and third photo down is normally used in the pillarless hardtops, and the bottom 2 photos in blue is another variation that I have seen on more than one hardtop. Anyone know if they changed cloth or had optional cloth for 57 Saratoga hardtops? OR am I mistaking the bottom version seat inerts for cloth ? Maybe it's vinyl, kinda hard to tell. The stuff kind of looks like the same stuff in the photos of the brown interior, in the post above this one, but the material seems to be installed with the pattern running the other way compared to the blue one.

You mean the Canadian Mexican one, with the Plymouth front clip??

There was an all-white '58 Saratoga 2dr HT up for sale recently that had the single spear side trim, looked very similar to the '57 above.

This was back when FL cars were not so uncommon and I came onto a 61 Polara (4HT?) with wires on it, ....
...original owner, very unmolested car. When asked, the owner said the wheels had been on it since new, adding
that it had been the "turntable car" on the showroom floor when she bought it.

I found a number (half dozen?) post-56 cars with original install wires on them back then. They always seemed
to be owned by those very conservative types that kept their cars forever and took very good care of them. Besides
looking much better than many of the FL hubcaps (at least the standard, non-spinner types), I think I am attracted
to them by the formal, conservative image they were associated with in the 50's. Today, people think they are "sporty",
but back then it was a different image.

Location: Parts Unknown		While I am pleased that reproduction wires are being made to cut the cost and trouble of getting a decent
original set restored, it has opened the floodgate to where every 8th FL car out there has wires, creating a
whole new paradigm image of how people "see" them. I still have a set of Adventurer spinners that I would
run on my car if they would fit a 15" wheel. Perhaps some custom wheel work is in order ? .. but I do not like
the look of the tiny 14" wheels and tires in those large wheel cavities of a car like my DeSoto. The standard
wheel cover is about as boring as it is possible to make one, and dog dishies, while a favorite of mine, would
be entirely inappropriate on a loaded convertible. So, wires it is !

Location: Oley, PA		I have to agree that the '57 Saratoga is one of the nicest incarnations of the Forward Look. The design is just so well put together and I actually think that the Saratogas look better than the New Yorkers of that year as they are just bit cleaner looking.

Location: Ocean Park, Washington		Thats the same as the 56 Windsor and New Yorker. The Windsor grill is much nicer than the NYer. And that cowcatcher bumper on the NYer is terrible. Sometimes simpler is better.

Location: Nasco , SWEDEN		Here´s a sad telegram! the Gentleman whom we bought the saratoga of is no longer with us! I mailed him some pic´s and told him everything was ok with the car and arrival etc etc. The answer came some time ago from his son! He had lost a battle against cancer! Steve Songer of Sheridan Wyoming was a supernice carguy! He will be missed!

that company in Oconomowoc (really-) WI: 262-567-7582
