There's been a sighting of a fourth dartline in the area! And this one followed me home... There was a collection of restoration projects and memorabilia auctioned off yesterday in a town about an hour away. I picked up a good parts car. I have pics, but can't find the cable for the camera to be able to load them. I'm really happy with it, and happy with the price. There was only one other bidder on it and he gave up pretty quick. This was the only forward-looker there. Nicest car at the auction was a 65 Fury II four-door. Garage-kept all its life, now showing a total of 30,015 miles. Interior was showroom new. The car really just needed some detailing and rock-chip touch up and it'd appear new. Pretty pretty car. That went for $3500. Was hard not to go after that one, but I kept my sights on the goal - my '58!

Hi 58Windsor

Congratulation , that was a strike of luck.

Can't wait to see the photos, does it have a lot of the parts you need ?
is it a 4 dr. sedan like your own ? what are the colors ?

Found the camera cable - here's a few quick pics

http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u359/58Windsor/Chryslers/P1040054_resized.jpg

http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u359/58Windsor/Chryslers/P1040056_resized.jpg

It does have a number of parts I was hoping for.  Since I intend to drive mine as much as I can, I get a lot of comfort in knowing I have a spare "everything" in case something really bad happens like gettng rearended or t-boned, or I blow it and hit something, etc.

The windshield is pretty good, one bullseye right on the curve down low on the driver's side.  It'd be usable if something happens to mine.  The trim is all pretty good, a few dings, but far fewer than mine.  Mine spent too many days in the grocery store parking lot by the looks of it.  There was a set of taillights in the trunk, both are cracked, but very usable.  There was also an extra set of hood & trunk letters, a set of the smooth-style hubcaps and one thing I've never seen on any model '57 - '58 Chrysler -- a set of fender skirts.  I test fit 'em and they're definitely for this wheelwell.  I don't know if they were a factory option or an aftermarket thing.

According to the license plates and the odometer, the car came off the road in 1970 with 103k on it.  The trans seems to be in nice shape, the fluid looks really nice and the tailshaft spins freely if that means much.  The engine is locked solid, but provided a complete carb and stock fuel line (my choke mechanism was missing and the fuel line was butchered).  My radiator is also pretty weak and this one looks very good.  No PB on this one, but does have PS.  The interior is very rough, but the top section of the seats with the molded W is in pretty good condition.  The front fenders are good too, whereas mine have large holes behind the eyebrows.

A buddy that went up with me picked up a very restorable '65 Impala 2-door.  I drove that one back while he towed mine (used his truck, mine's currently waiting some motor work).  All in all, a very good day.  I spent Sunday stripping it down of all the parts I wanted to keep safe.  Monday night we took the bare shell to the farm.  My immediate neighbors are car guys too, but I try to keep the turnaround fast for the sake of those in the neighborhood that aren't (and for the wives of those who are).

I still know of one more. Again, a twin to mine like this one. That one's not as nice, but I'd still like to see it in my pasture instead of theirs.  Not to be greedy, but because I know if it's mine, it'll never see a crusher no matter how high the price of metal goes.

Hi 58Windsor

Sorry I haven't reply' ed sooner, but my computer have been struck by a very bad virus, so i have been without computer for a long time,
"man that is hard" i have always sayed that a computer was a time robber, and that i had better things to do, but darn it's had to be without.

I'm glad to hear that you got your hands on that "DartLine" and you say that you have found one more, I will try to make a count,
over the cars we know of until now.

By the way, i cant see your pictures, can you put them on this thread.

Morgan, that red and the white 4-dr Dartline are probably different cars, since the fender antennae are on opposite
sides of the cars and the rear view mirrors are different, but, maybe-not; the tires look very similar on both images.

Hi FL friends!

Thanks for the new pictures, that give us some new "DartLine" cars,
now we just have to find out who own them, and hopefully get them to tell us abouth them on this thread.

I also have some exsiting news, I have finely found a Brochure on the "DartLine",
I knew of it, but I had never seen one, now I have got one,
I will scan it in and put the pictures on this thread.

The brochure also contain some other interresting informations,
abouth the so called "Spring Option", was it awailebel on all Chrysler models,
and what dit it contain, this info is also in this brochure.

The brochure is not a normaly sale brochure, it is an intern company brochure,
it tell's the dealers abouth what they can use to boost sale,
and how the company will advertiseI for the "DartLine".

I will post it soon.

You should call yourselves : "Dartliners" !

What do you suppose this car model's designers would have said, if anyone, back then,
had told them (for ANY FWDLK'er, for that matter???) : " You know, 50 years from now
people will be obsessing over the ownership and the documentation of these cars".

I have doubts, but I hope so!  Mine was Fireglow and I really like the color on this car!!

Monitors can alter the colors, but mine has a more orange tint than what I'm seeing here.  This appears as more of a burnt copper or GM's Sierra Gold.

I wish we knew what this one was for certain!!  I really like it!   Pretty pretty car!

Anyone know the owner?

Haven't forgotten it, have just been busy as you've been. I worked hard to make it to a local show, doing a lot of work on the car, only to have the front wheel cylinders fail the week prior and to find her stuck in first gear. I suspect the latter may just be the throttle valve rod adjustment, but have not gotten back to check. We're feeling summer slipping away now, so all those outdoor projects are gaining priority. Probably won't get back onto the car anymore now until after the holidays. So close!!!

Hi 58 Windsor !

I know how you feel !

I still ain't finished with my garage project, so the next couple of weeks will I still be working on that,
I got to be finished before the rain realy starts, because I have enty'ed my garage by moving everything out to a big tent,
and that ain't to waterproff, so I am in a hurry to get everything back in to the garage.

Bad luck with your Windsor, maby we get a little "Indian Summer" so you will be able to get it done, and still get a little crusing time,
before winter, luckly I have my 59 Dodge to cruise in.
My boy is also getting a bit restless, he wants us to work on his Dodge "440", but who can blame him, I remember my first car.

I hope some of the owners of the new cars we have got on this thread, will be joining us and maby tell there story.

Hi out there

I have been busy over the summer working on our house and the garage, now my memorabilia room on the first floor is almost finished,
and so is the garage part down under, so now I hope we can get some god story’s, and informative debates going again on this thread.

We have been talking about the 1958 Chrysler Windsor “Dartline’s”, and how many we knew of that still exist today,
up till now we have counted 19 different ( unfortunaly we do not have pictures of all of them, it could be fun if that was possible ).

I hope to hear about some new cars that you fellow FL lovers has spotted, and I hope to see some pictures of them,
also on the cars we know but until now don’t have pictures of.

Beside that write and tell us about your car, restore experience, good or bad dealers, if you need some part or if you got some for sale,
or anything you think can be of interest for us fellow “Dartliner’s”.

I will make an updated list of the cars we know of, and put it on here soon.

Also I will put on pictures of my original “Dartline” Brochure as I promised while back.

Hi fellow "Dartliner's" and other FL friends

We are at the time of year, where it is starting to get cold, at least in Denmark,
the cars have been put away for the winter, and they are even talking abouth posible
snow in the near future.

Now it is time to start some of the indoor things, like chating on the FL threads,
cleaning up the garage, working on the cars, and yes helping the wife with the house,
fortunaly I have been doing a lot in the house this year, so I am not so pressed here.

I hope to get some work done on my son's '64 Dodge, my own '59 Dodge, my camping trailer
and then I hope I will be able to finish my garage.

I have been working on the "Dartline" list lately, and that will be put on the thread soon.

Let's hear what you have been do'ing to your car, and what the plans are for the winter.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I have always found it hard to believe that a car like my DeSoto was considered ugly
and out of fashion.

If you think about it, the cars didn't change, just the viewer's eye.

I remember the first time I saw one. The sensation was like being struck by lightning.
I felt that way 30 years ago. I feel that way now. How could anyone not think this is the
most beautiful car ever built ? Are they nuts ? Yet out of 474 built, only about 5 are known
to survive. Everyone else thought they were worthy of nothing more than the scrap heap.

But to extrapolate, ... I tend to think of cars from a salesman's perspective after having
grown up in the muscle car era. Imagine the years 63 thru 69 and every year those cars
they delivered out back of your Dodge dealer were faster and jazzier than the year before.
And then came 70. Sorry, buddy ... this is the best we got. Then 71 and 2 ....
By 74 you were being asked to sell gutless ugly crap and your paycheck depended on you
hawking them with enthusiasm, when you knew full well that they were 1/2 the car you were
offering just a few years before.

In this light, I find it hard to accept that people didn't look at post FL cars and shake their
heads. The golden age was over. Buy a shapeless box and act like you're happy about it.

I agree with you, but that is our society. Look at the preferred house of 90% of Americans. They think the modern bland suburban home is the best thing since sliced bread. Most Americans lack the desire to pay attention to what the “best” really is, but prefer to be “told” (or sold) what is the “best”. Fashion is about the art of the sales pitch. Get the masses to think your poo smells the best and you make a mint.

I work in architecture and it is interesting to watch the historical trends of things. In the ‘60s we were tearing down anything and everything as fast as possible to replace it with modern buildings. Get rid of that ugly old Victorian or anything else built before WWII! If we cannot afford to tear it down, lets strip off the ornamentation and hang metal facades over the front of the building to make it look less old. Now we look back and wonder what we were thinking. Buildings look great for 10 years then sit as reminders of our mistakes for the next 5 or 6 decades. Then suddenly, we get nostalgic when a building survives over 50 or 75 years and want to preserve it. Cars are the same…except the timeline is a little shorter. Same with clothing or hair styles.

At some point it will end, when what we build (cars or buildings) has a soul-less design and will never be worthy of our nostalgic need to preserve it. Are we already there?

I am with you here. I am a bit younger than you, (born in ’71) but follow the same path. I was in total awe at the first forwardlook I saw in the early ‘80s. Actually…anything with fins was fantastic. How could anyone not want these today, I thought. Don’t forget that 90% of the car buying public wants “easy”, not “beautiful”. Even if the forwardlooks were always loved, well over half would have been crushed due to being plain worn out or damaged. I have sent a few cars I loved to the junkyard because its service life was over and it was time to move on. A new car will always be the right car to an owner wanting simple, dependable transportation.

I would argue that 95% of the general public would still find no value in our Forwardlooks. We are really a small bunch and our passion for these cars is rare. My wife sees no beauty in fins. I would argue this is a mainstream opinion, especially for people 40 years and younger that have no nostalgic connection to them.

I love hearing my old boss talk about the Midwest car culture in the early ‘70s. He graduated H.S. in ’74. He would talk about the new ’73 LeMans/Chevelle cars at the dealership and everyone was shaking their heads. It seemed that was the new trend in car design, so get used to it. I also get that vibe from reading early/mid ‘70s car magazines. At least the cars were new with no miles on them, so the general public bought them….or should I say were “sold” to them.

As a (Dutch) kid, in the '80s, I already had developed a liking of the big 'older' US-made cars. I still remember the day(s) when I heard that some brand was bringing out their new model of that year. I got somewhat excited and anxious to see what they would come up with, but everytime it was a huge disappointment to me as the 'thing' they showed was just an uglier, smaller, wimpier version of the year before.
I also remember Dutch TV shows where the winner would be able to win a car. I had seen ('70s) TV shows in the US where the winner would drive home with some fullsize luxurious car, where on the Dutch TV shows the 'winner' was expected to react happy when he was handed the keys of some of the smallest and cheapest little fåggy econo-Euro/Jap-shîtbox made that year.
This kinda crap really shaped my vision of that era and is part of the reason why I started disliking anything just about any car made after the mid '70s orso.

Buttehh, aren't we slightly offtopic here?

Hi, I think like you.

It is very few car after 1970, that I find exiting from US. and if we take Europe and asia,
there are compared to the numbers of models produced much less.

I fell in love with the 1950's US cars, when I first saw "American Graffiti" in 1976 at age 14,
but when I got my licence as 18 ( you are not allowed to drive before 18 in Denmark ) there was not
many 50's cars around, at least not American car, so I bought a 1969 Dodge Dart GT, that was a good car
and that started my love for Mopar, everybody els wanted GM or Ford and preferbly Muscle cars.

The more I looked at the 50's Mopar the more I fell in love, I also like a 1968 - 69 Charger,
but it is absolutly the 50's that I find most exiting,
I also fell in love with the music, the cloth, the hairstyle, and the way that most people then
treated each other with respect, something that is really missing today.

So to say it shortly "I'm lost in the 50's"

Hi "Dartliner's" and other FL lovers !

Sorry it has been so long.

To Soiouz
You told us abouth a "Dartline" fore sale on the net, I know abouth the car,
a while back I wrote abouth a car I was in the proces of buying, it was that car.

It was on ebay twise before I got in contact with the owner, nobody bit on it,
we wrote to each other, but when I asked for some extra pictures of the trunk and undercarriage,
I newer heard anything.

Then you saw it on ebay again, but this time with the pictures I asked for, so I don't know
why he never wrote me back, maby it was because he had a feeling, that I would find it to much a
parts car when I saw the pictures, and I did.
This time on ebay it was put on at a lower price and sold ( but at the start price ).

To Morgan, nice pictures of the "Dartline" from Finland, do you know the owner ?

I will, as promised, come back with the new list of "Dartline's" that we know of, a few new is turn up.

Also I promised to put on the special intern "Dartline" brochure, but my scanner has been out of order.

Hi David !

Always good to hear from fellow FL fans, and nice that you help us find other
Dartline cars and owners.

I followed the sale on ebay, after I saw the extra pictures of the trunk and undercarriage,
I found out that I was right, there was a lot of rust, at least to much for my project.

I still think it will be a nice project car ( I dont need one more of those ) or a wery nice parts car,
but then I think the price was to high.

Hi Windsor59 !

Yes that is the "Dartline" we have been writing abouth, it look rather nice on thise pictures doesn't it.

That was what made me contact the US. owner, for a possible buy, but I saw a picture of the trunk
that made me wonder how the undercarrigde looked, so I asked for some pictures of that, and I never
heard from him again, but I saw some from when he put it up for sale again on ebay, I didn't bid on it.

And now it is for sale in Sweden, as I see it, it is a good project or a very good parts car, but then I think
the price is a bit to high.

Did Chrysler offer any new Spring Special colors as DeSoto did? DeS had 3 unique colors that were introduced with for Spring Special models.

No activity on mine. I've done a lot of work in the garage though rearranging and organizing. Finally cleared enough space I was able to get the pickup in for it's overdue engine swap. Once that's done I'll get (re)started on the '58 again. Next up: brakes.

"Did Chrysler offer any new Spring Special colors as DeSoto did? DeS had 3 unique colors that were introduced with for Spring Special models."

Yes. Three. The FireGlow we've discussed is one. The two-door on the rollback truck above is a good example of that. We actually covered that exact question on page one of this thread. Chip Charts and all. The post from Mogge65 with the three cars on one ad shows those three as well.

Hi Firedome welcome to this thread !

Just as 58Windsor say, we have talked abouth the spring colors before,
but when I put on the "Dartline" brochure you can see them again
( I just have a problem, the brochure is to big for the scanner ).

Chrysler also had 3 spring colors, "Fireglow", "Bimini Blue" and "Frosty Tan".

Hi 58Windsor, I feel with you, there is always something that need to be done first,
but maby I will get to my "Dartline" one day, I hope so.
When you and others do something, load some pictures of what you do,
and how long you get.

Thanks Torben! ... my interest in these is that I may be getting a 58 Windsor Spring Special - has the wide roof and rocker moldings, the 3 strips on the trunk, but not the Dart-Line side trim. It's a 4 dr Hardtop in a faded tan metallic color, it might be "Frosty Tan" Not sure that I like that color, so may change it to one of the other 58 Spring Special colors like the "Fireglow"!

And since y'all are 58 owners, does anyone know of a source for good used 58 tail-light lenses? The repro's are not very affordable, and the repro-er in AU is alleged to be, well, er, not very dependable!

I wonder if my long lost family in Goteborg are driving ForwardLooks now... maybe it's in the Scandinavian genes!

Hi FL Friends !

It took some time, but I have finaly found someone with a scanner, that could take
the size of my "Dartline" broch., so here it is.

As you can see, it also shows the "Spring" options to the other Chrysler models,
and the "Spring" colors.

Torben

Damm I forgot how to include the pictures, I'll come back.

Yiiipiiii it worked

We tryed to conect the two picture that shows the inside of the folder,

Thanks for sharing that! That's cool. I hope I can run across one of these brochures someday to add to the collection.
Interesting that all the outline drawings show the bumperettes, but the fully colored cars do not. The text doesn't indicate they're part of the package, so they may have stll been considered further optional trim. It also answers why I couldn't figure out the 'additional roof trim' mentioned by others. Being mine's a sedan, I don't have it.

The "HERE ARE THE THINGS THE FACTORY WILL DO" section could now be subtitled "Here's a convenient shopping list for memorbilia to hunt down" hahaha

58Windsor - 2010-11-16 8:57 PM There's been a Dartline sighting. A near twin to mine has shown up in town. Lucky Duck actually gets to drive his. I first heard about it a couple weeks ago when a friend called excited and shocked I got mine on the road without telling him. I rushed to where he'd seen it, but it was already gone. Another friend ran across it today at a shop he does business with. This time I caught it. Harder for it to get away without front wheels...hahaha It's in for a front suspension rebuild by the looks of things. Color is slightly different than my Fireglow Poly. I don't know if it's just more faded, or was more toward a champaigne to start with. Regardless, nice car. Definitely better shape than mine; trim is much straighter and less rust overall. Very clean car; only a little rust at the bottom of the front fenders. I left my name and phone number with the shop and they clipped it onto his paperwork. Hopefully I'll get a call in a couple of days.

I forgot to post a follow-up on this.  I never heard from the owner, but I have found out who it is.  I've not had the pleasure of meeting him, but have heard he has some really nice Forward Looks.  Considering the Dartline I saw was getting a front suspension rebuild using strictly NOS parts, it sounds like this one will get there as well.   Nice to know it has a good home!

Hi Greg !

Nice to hear what happend with the other "Dartline", a pitty he has not been in contact,
maby you shuld just try again later, yes it sound like it is in a good home.

When I hopefully start to restore my "Dartline", I must admit I will proberbly go the easy way
and use repro parts, I dont't think I can affort that many NOS parts, and I don't even think
I can find that many, it need's almost everything.

Abouth the brochure, yes I'm so happy to have found this, and from the "to collect list" I
have 3 different big size Full page Ads., 2 is one page and 1 is a two-spred.
I don't have the Postcard and it could be fun to see what the other material is, if it is something
we can collect.

I'm allredy collecting auto related material, I have abouth 10.000 brochures, 3.000 Owners manuals
and 1.500 Workshop and Parts manuals ( I must admit I have never counted them so I don't know ),
beside that I have maby 2.500 magasines and 400 books.

I also collect Model cars (mainly Chrysler corp.) and Petromobilia, and things from the 50's, I have some
Photo camera's, portable Record players and 2 TV's, so yes im a bit of a nostalgic 50's "nuttcase".

That might explain why I was so busy with my garage project last year, I need'ed a place for my collection.
Maby I should try to count all the things I have ??? do I dare, or will my wife juse it against me ???

Great info - thanks for posting it Torben!! It clearly shows the Spring Trim options for my soon to come (hopefully) '58 Windsor, which has the "Insert" instead of "Dartline", with the wide roof trim, rocker trim, and 3 trunk strips.

PS - Is that Windsor 4 dr sedan on the cover of the brochure supposed to be Frosty Tan?
It looks more like very pale purple to me?!
Especially when you compare it to the samples on the following pages.

Hi firedome !

You are welcome, I knew this information would be interresting, and
You are right, it dosn't look like "Frosty Tan" but I think it is supose to be.

That just show's what I always say, you can not use a printed colorchip,
you have to have a colorchip with paint samples, because a printcolor
are different than a paint color, and the color on the print will change a little
for each print, so no two are alike, remember that if you are looking for samples
to paint a car.

Right, and I have the color sample sheet from Dupont, which has actual paint chips, so they should be accurate. What is interesting is that the color on the DartLine Windsor sedan in the brochure above looks identical to the color in the pics the seller sent me of my soon to come Spring '58, and the seller described it as a faded Light Lavender color, not tan. And Chrysler DID offer a light pale purple for '59, called Iris, I believe? Hmmmm. I wonder if the late '58s could get a '59 color?

In a word, no.

Check the paint code on the data tag. The colour code on the tag will be a 1958 code. Anything else will be a special code.
