Location: North Australia | My 1960 Imperial Crown Southampton 2 dr hardtop arrived at my home in Darwin last week. 6 months and 7 days since I looked at and purchased the car in Cal. Car did not appear to suffer too much during the journey, except a good ding in the sump and possibly broken 'floating power' engine mounts, and failed brakes. Pedal goes to the floor. Emergency brake is OK, thankfully. I did have instructions put into the car to explain the park brake and no park function in the auto to the loaders/unloaders and truckies. Car was a non runner on arrival in Australia, I suspect the key was in the aux position and the rear demister fan was running and dead flattened the battery. The battery seems to have recovered after 2 days charging surprisingly! Engine runs OK, and looks better since I degreased and cleaned on the weekend. I should of taken a photo of the engine pre-wash, I am fairly sure it has not been washed before, a thick coating of black grease and muck, and the little red cardboard caution tabs were on the charging system wiring, one on the generator and another on the reg. These blew straight off, even with careful use with the pressure cleaner. Some of the original engine paint and lables also came away with the grease. Gearbox also seems OK, one of the receipts that were in the car shows a box re-build in 1980. Looks like most shaft seals on the drive train are leaking to some degree. I purchased the car from the original owner, looks like the odometer has just cranked over the first time, just over 1000 miles on the clock! The maintenance receipts support this. The car has been registered (licenced) since new, and the stack of stickers on the plate is almost 6 mm thick! Car is optioned with the 'Road Command' package, auto beam changer, mirrormatic, tinted windows 2.9/1 slippery diff, also has power windows and vent windows, leather trim, Flightsweep, remote mirror, 35 amp genny. Has anyone seen a number plate surround like this one? Car is in good original condition with only two minor rust spots one in the passenger sill and at the rear window lower edge. Once I got the car and looked at all the paperwork that came with the car I realised I purchased the car 50 years from the original purchase. The owner service certificate shows purchase on 28/11/59, and I looked at and purchased the car on 28/11/09! My intention is to make the car roadworthy, registered, so I can drive it , and preserve the car as best I can. I feel lucky to have been fortunate to have found one of these fine, rare cars. At least, Redwood City is not a hot-dry environment, so the leather and soft trim should be OK on it. Nice find; it's in a good home, now.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | I've got a similar stack of year-tags on my original "D500" license plates, from 1980-2006(?), when I had some re-pop plates be made up, that are on the car, now. Altho I would not ordinarily advise it, but, as the car will not be driving again in CA any time soon, Steven COULD peel off the stack, exposing the bottom sticker, to confirm when those black plates were first applied to the (rear-) plate---the earliest sticker may well be 1964, with the plates having been issued to it in 1963, when ALL of the cars registered in CA had to surrender their existing plates and install the new-for-63 "black" plates. Steven could always re-glue the stack back onto the plate, after photographing the bottom sticker, to record it, for posterity.

Location: North Australia | Thanks to all for the compliments about the car. Adriana, the combo looks good to me too. The interior is red, with black carpet and lower door trim. I first became aware of the 1960 Imp about 6 years ago and began looking for one then. The first one I saw is in your home town, Adelaide, it is still there, in a shed. Dusk Mauve (pink) exterior, with a lavender interior, I am sort of glad he chose not to sell it to me, at the last minute! You would love it though. B/G, that is my son, he was the first of us to sit in the car, I am 45 nearly. Neil, I bought the car in Pacifica. I got some history of the car when I was looking at it to purchase. I hope to get more. The car spent most of its working life in Pacifica, mainly being used as transport to Lake Tahoe and back. Apparently licenced the whole time. The owner and family had a holiday house at Tahoe they visited, and the car was extracted from the garage, and driven to Tahoe and then into the garage there, then back again. The Old Gentleman I purchased the car from kept it in a heated garage with blankets over it, at the front of the house. More than once he told me the care was his pet, while he was following me around while I was looking at it. He told me during the test drive he took us on that he had worked for Robert Mitchum and Frank Sinatra, I think as a chippie, working on their residences in San Fran. Did these blokes live in S.F.? He was very reluctant to take me for a test drive as I think he knew I was serious in buying the car. He was being forced (I think) to downsize, as his daughters wanted to make him move to the Bay area to have him closer to them. His wife had passed away the previous year or so. The car is not entirely original, I have found evidence it has a relaced bonnet, front guards and passenger inner guard. These come from a bronze car, and have been fitted and re-painted. Some badly fitted panels and average paint compared to the rest of the car. She must have taken a good hit in the bows at some time. You may notice there are no CROWN emblems under the front guard ‘Imperial’ badges, so the guards may have came off a CUSTOM. As I have been looking over this car I realise I have never seem a car constructed like this! The chassis and body look incredibly strong and is made to last. The undercoating is 3 mm thick in most places. I had a go tonight to peel the licence stickers to see the first one, but they are stuck good. I will wait to take the plate off, then have another go. Spent more time tonight looking under the car to check out the drive train for faults. This thing is heavy duty! Found things like flat tortion or torque bars on the diff housing, above each axel, and a large plate bolted to the top of the diff centre with a rubber bumper which hits the body I think. Also saw a broken leaf in the driver side stack. The tail shaft is long, and two pieces. The gear box and park brake assembly look good, just a little tranny fluid. Can some one explain the little spring loaded valve in the right hand exhaust manifold? It is stuck I think. Neil, why did you think the car was from near the Ocean? My intention is to get the car road worthy and registered, and drive the thing. The old guy averaged 2000 miles per year, I hope I can match that! Kc Imp, yep the emblems are there, probably replacements from ‘the bingle’. I saw two of these emblems on ebay a week ago, they were sold early. 59CRL, yeah, I also like the tails and dash, Space age is right! Looks like a rocket ship to me! 1960 would be the beginning of the space age, right? I just finished reading an autobiography by Ken McCracken (Blast off) He is an Aussie from Tassie, who worked for NASA in the 50’s and into the 60’s. Awesome read, if you are into that kind of thing. So when did the jet age finish, and the space begin, or is there an overlap? Regards Steve.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7205 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | 60 Imp - 2010-06-17 6:32 AM Can some one explain the little spring loaded valve in the right hand exhaust manifold? It is stuck I think. Regards Steve. Steve, that little valve is the "Manifold Heat Control Valve" commonly called a heat riser valve which is thermostatically controlled by the spring on it. When the engine is cold started, the valve cuts off the exhaust from exiting down the right side exhaust and thereby forces the hot exhaust gases up through a heat passage in the intake manifold, then down and out the left side exhaust, to warm up the carburetor for smooth running when cold. So if it's working correctly, when the car is cold you will only have exhaust coming from one pipe ( that is if you have dual exhaust system). After its warmed up, the valve opens up so that exhaust gases are then able to pass down through the exhaust manifold and out both exhaust pipes, or down and through the crossover pipe if its a single exhaust. Most of these valves get seized up if not kept lubricated ( including the one on my 1960 Saratoga ). Its not the easiest job to remove it for rebuilding. Edited by imopar380 2010-06-17 3:23 PM

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | On an IMP, you may want to overhaul/lube the existing MHCV, or even replace it with one from evilpay or a parts supplier like Roberts or Bernbaum, but, in a temporate climate, the MHCV even when wide open, will primarily only serve to restrict the gas flow out from that exhaust manifold, as it is smaller I/S diameter from that of the exhaust pipes. A lot of people merely remove the thing and not worry about the exhaust gas immediately warming up the gas flow into the carburetor. It was OEM installed because the cars (duh) were operated in many different climates, and the thing was necessary if you were going to drive the car in the Uppa-You-Ess, or Canuckville, or in Northern Europaland, in the dead of winter. Your safest bet is may be to find a NOS MHCV, and install it, because your existing MHCV is probably wasted; if it's become stuck, partially open, your car will not be 'happy'. I figured on an ocean-breeze environment due to the pervasive, but minor, surface pitting on its chrome work. An inland-CA car will often have virtually perfect chrome/metal, but its interior/soft items usually have become heat baked to a fair-the-well. Maddox Vintage (maybe Big M, too, on this website) should have a 1960+ IMP's which can provide their leaf spring assemblies to you. Seems unusual that only one leaf will have broken; best bet is to get complete replacement assemblies. There was a 60 IMP 2-dr HT for sale, recently, as posted on our "Craigslist" message board; dunno if its owner/seller would part it out, or SHIP it to OZ. The bump-absorber, above the differential, is OEM, as are those two torque-controller bars (IIRC). You are about to become very knowledgeable about the 1960 Imperials, over the next few years (right, Adriana?)

The You-Ess took a significant hit to its pride when the Sputter was launched, but as a recent Public Broadcasting System show revealed, recently, 'we' were prepared to launch a satellite before the Russkies, but some sort of political decsion kept us from doing that. BTW, iirc, Sputnik is still in orbit (--the size of a basketball???), and the Russkies also launched the first animal into orbit (a dog), but they let it DIE while it was still in orbit!

Actually I believe Sputnik fell to Earth and was destroyed within a year or two. It's quite true about the little dog Laika as the Russkies had not perfected a way to bring the capsule down at the time. The capsule probably burned up as it fell to the Earth in later years, but the dog didn't feel anything, having died from oxygen deprivation some time before.

What is that beige box with the lever sticking out the top underneath your steering column? Is that some kind of handicap control?

Location: North Australia | The "Wizard' got it right. It is a trailer brake switch. It is a Kelsey Hayes brand switch. I have not really checked it out, but the lever would be for manual application of the trailer brake. It also is tee'd into the brake line using a tee at the master cylinder, with a tube coming through the firewall and connecting to the assembly under the steering wheel, for auto application I suppose. The Old Guy told me he towed an Airstream, which I assume is what we call a caravan and you guys call a trailer. I have today recieved a delivery from Rockauto, all the brake components except shoes. Master, 6 slaves, rubber tubes. Total came to $285, plus $120 delivery. I ordered all Dorman parts, all came from the same point which helped minimise shipping. I thought (hoped) all the bits would be USA made but two of the front slaves were marked on the box as Chinese made. I have made a drum puller for the rears and pulled them off, and stripped the fronts. Next I will fab an axel puller and replace the rear seals and bearings. If anyone needs info on this stuff let me know. I have been looking for brake shoes on the WWW. Found two suppliers, Old Parts source, on ebay and a company in Washinton (I think) called Hagans. $65 on ebay $100 from Hagans (inc paying for the cores) for each end, front and rear. Does anybody know of other suppliers for the 12 x 2 1/2 shoes? All but the l/h rear shoes appear servicable, these are contaminated with diff oil and brake fluid. Parts prices so far are relatively cheap, but freight is a killer. I am also considering having the shoes re-lined locally, but would like a new set to get the old girl mobile, and re-build all the brake components in the future for spares. I have pulled apart and repaired the r/h tail light and repaired the loose broken lense and bezel, repaired the drivers door power window, re-aligned the front bumper and removed front 6 way power seat. The seat was my only failure. The seat generally works OK except for intermitantly stopping.Pulled apart the 6 way switch, drive motor, motor relay, the 3 directional solenoids. Cleaned, inspected and re-assembled all components with no real improvement. After thinking about it after I had finished, I think the little overload switch in the brush end of the motor might be the problem. This was the only part which seemed excessively worn. I did clean the contacts. This, with a slightly discharged battery could account for the intermitant fault (overload activating prematurely). Man that seat is heavy, and the mechanism is unlike anything I have seen before! Clever engineering, like the rest of the car I suppose. I have not looked at the heat riser valve, it is siezed, not sure what position. The motor runs good in the drive, even though I have put no fresh fuel in the tank. Have also tweaked the auto beam changer and the 'Electroluminecent' guage lights. The 'Mirrormatic" seems like it is past it's used by date though. Will look into that further down the track.

Looking at the block pics it looks to have had a re-bore and new pistons going by the apparent lack of ring ridge wear area and complete bore hone marks. Pistons look new ? ............ .......

Location: North Australia | Thanks. I'll post some more photos soon. Block bored .030''. New pistons from Egge. Piston supply was a drama. Ended up talking to Egge, and they brought forward production to supply me with the .030' overs, thankfully. NOS bearings, standard, all journals were spot on. I matched the head ports to the manifolds, and cleaned up the valve bowls and the runners, including the inlet and exhaust manifold passages, with the intent of improving air/gas flow. The head and manifold port match and runner work took me a week. I was going a bit slow as this is the first time I have done this. I was happy with how it looked, now I am curious to how it will go. Hardened exhaust seats and engine balanced too. New water pump, timing set, cam and bearings, lifters, freeze plugs, electronic distributor e.t.c. I used an inlet manifold gasket with the crossover blanked, and removed the heat riser valve. Re-built/kitted the fuel pump and carb. Cooling fan and radiator cowl come from a parts car. Used the Jaguar fan clutch. I did this, and (mounted a Sanden ac compressor and 75 A alternator) because I intend to install ac in the car. Engine needs water and one electrical connection on the ballast and is ready to re-commission! Gear box had the seals replaced, adjusted the bands and painted black. Actually most of the engine is black too. Front suspension all re-done except for the centre link and idler arm, they were good. All the normal brake components replaced with new (USA made) parts. Prop shaft universals replaced, along with my homemade centre bearing. I could not get one at the time, now they are included in a kit. Shafts also balanced. My centre bearing is made from one for a early 50's F100, and modified. I believe it is better than an original, but yet to test it Differential has been out and re-sealed and new axle bearings. The center was good. I have replaced the carpet, along with the underlay/insulation. Car has 3 layers under the carpet, including the heavy rubber backing on the carpet. Now to re-install the rest of the original interior. Getting close now. Steve.

Location: North Australia | Started my 413 tonight. Over a year to get to this point. Sounded good. Ran at high revs for 15 minutes with he break in joose in the sump. Topped up the box and PS a couple times. Exhaust manifolds started to get a little glow up when I shut it down, which got me worried. Any comments? Possibly timing needed adjustment. I did not check it. Power steer also got very hot. need to look at this more. I did not cycle it (swing the steer wheel) on the start, so maybe it was air locked? Oil pressure good (75 lb. at around 2 grand) and hit 210-215 F on the temp gauge. I was very stressed prior to this start, now relieved very much! Lots of time and money into this project! Veteran Posts: 298 Location: Nashville, TN | You really have a nice looking 60 Imperial. White is a really good color with the red interior. My 60 Imp is black with red interior. She is presently at the transmission shop getting her leak fixed. I elected to just go ahead and have a rebuild while she was there. Kanter Auto has complete 12X2 1/2 brake rebuild kits. After looking underneath this car I think front disc brakes are in order it's a lot of weight there to stop. You have a beauty there...congratulations.

Location: North Australia | Some photos of My Imp out on the road. Been almost a year licenced now, just put the car on club rego this time (red and white plates). The Imperial is a big car, everyone comments on that, but there are bigger things on the road here in the NT, lots of them. Steve. Location: North Australia | Yep Dorsey, she moves out real well!. Smooth, quiet and powerful. I have taken the car up to 110MPH a few times and it gets there easy. Just the ticket for overtaking the road trains like the one above. Gets away from a standing start OK too considering the high ratio differential. One rattle where the RHS exhaust touches the gearbox cross member when the engine is loaded up. Steve.
