Location: The Mile High City | Fantastic! David, thanks for posting that link. I am a member of the NDC, but I have never been able to view the forums. Something about cookies. I clicked on the link and there it all was. The 'sweep looks like a very promising start. It is always a bit sad to see a good car with all the parts and intentions to restore - then time gets away I guess...

Expert Posts: 1491 Location: Lordstown, Ohio | d500neil - 2010-09-07 3:32 PM It's a Firesweep (Dodge version), but that's OK! Help me understand what this means? Does it mean that this car is the least desirable of the Desoto's. (cheapest version?) I talked with the guy about 45 minutes or so. His dad wants out of there. He had a broker call him on it, offered him 15-20k for all of it. Someone from Sweden. And myself. I would really like to own this ride, but I need to sell a 60 Fury Golden Commando convertible, and maybe a 69 Camaro convertible Wayne

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Right; entry-level model, that was actually built on the Dodge assembly line, which means it shares a lot of features/equipment with the Dodge models, including its frame-chassis/engine, and its front sheet metal. It was the Economy version of the upscale DeSoto.

Expert Posts: 3480 Location: Montreal, Canada | It was the economy-model in 1958, but that doesn't mean they sell for cheap now, of course... Remember this one that sold for 154 000$ last year? http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=27413&...58%20firesweep%20conv&highlightmode=1#M189597 ...and there's a reference in that thread to another one that sold in January 2008 for 170 000$!! I hope it works out for you, Wayne! Edited by soiouz 2010-09-07 4:07 PM

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | All it takes is one or more people with lots of money to spend...the question becomes: how MANY one-or-more people are still interested-and-able to spend their lot (arguably too-much) of money, on a particular car? E.G.: this car-and-parts would have brought a lot higher initial buying offer, than $20K, around 1990. Edited by d500neil 2010-09-07 5:11 PM

Expert Posts: 2244 Location: Yorba Linda, Ca | Obviously the Hemi's were not for this car (at least originally). It came with a 326 and pretty good chance it had a 2 speed "Powerflite" tranny--alto you could pay extra back then and get the torqueflite. Except for the front, the car looks very much like the "Senior Desotos" (Firedome, Fireflite and Adventurer). From the rear, it is hard to tell one from the other. The interiors of the firesweeps were about as exciting as the original "Snowflake" my 59 Vert Coronet had, (That was converted by the seller to A Custom Royal) except for the eyebrows and the interior and I finished that. Good point about time sneaking away--that's why I drive mine, every day and enjoy the heck out of it. I would have liked to have seen a Blue 59 Dodge Convertible back on the road, but I think time will "Get away from Me" before that happens! Now that the Swedes know about that 58 cvt, I think our chances of keeping it in the US are about as good as a snowball's chance in Yorba Linda, Calif! Gary

The 58 had the 350 motor---boy I getting old, (One of you guys wanna volunteer to Chaueffer me around in my 59 Vert) ((I may be getting too senile to drive it)) Gary

Location: Parts Unknown | I spoke with Bob at length about this car several weeks ago. I still have not seen the photos he had promised. The car was originally light blue with white sweep and top. It did not have much for options. Likely I will deploy before I hear back from him. I'd love to have a baseline convertible like this to do with no sweep, dog dishies and blackwalls just as a contrast to the bling-barge Fireflite.

Assuming no ridiculous rust issues, my guess is $14,732.16. If I were selling it, I would not sell for less than $10,000. If I were buying it, I would not pay $20,000 (even delivered to my front door by the Swedish Bikini Team).

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Well, it's a small world, and, at least this ride will (should-) get a sympathetic restoration. The American-market is apparently saturated; good for the REST of the world to get involved in MoPar restorations.

Location: Parts Unknown | Yeah, ... I am thrilled to know another one of these cars will never see the American road again. I toyed with buying this car, but just could not swing it in the time frame before deployment. I guess my time was oversaturated with things to do like finish wrapping up my building and packing for a long trip.

Lancer Mike |

Location: The Mile High City | Garry - Have you sent a request to Chrysler Historical for your build card? That might tell about the interior. If you have a scan of the build card, you should post it in the VIN and data plate forum under a thread called 1958 De Soto. That's where mine is along with Doc's, Gidman's, Faltus', Jones' (?), and Nichols'. I think we can figure out some of those codes if we work together on it.
Doctor DeSoto |
| ||
Location: Parts Unknown | It was not uncommon for Firesweep buyers to upgrade to the Firedome interior. However, the all-vinyl interior was often preferred in the convertibles, due to sun exposure on the fabrics. How many here are old enough to remember what a big deal it was to close the drapes to keep the sun from getting on Grandma's couch ? I have not heard that cry since I was a kid !
