This is my car. Note the holes in the fin but almost all Fury trims are there, and the front fenders have the holes in the right place for the Fury scripts. These seem to be impossible to find, only found 1 bent one on ebay???

John (big M) on here is the man to get with on the parts you need. He is a member here and at our club. Real good guy.

Believe it or not I have picked up a great deal of the UK/Ozzy, Lingo from other club members and my customers. I find myself using "Bloody" Bullocks, Good on ya mate, and 4 door saloon just to name a few so I got you when you call it the "boot".

I got the import papers today for my car and with that I finally have a vin number . I am now on the hunt for any other info I can get about it. I have decoded the vin, and it seems it is a fury and not a belvedere as i thought it might be. The exporter was "Americal Auto Tours" I guess they took people on car scavenger hunts. With my car came 10 others on a ship called Neptune crystal and was shipped from Seattle and left there on 13/04/1990. From the storage reciept, It arrived in fremantle (Perth Australia) on the 28/05/1990. I also have a title certificate with i think its old plate number on it and a guys name. The plate number was YAA268 and it seems to have lived in Washington.
Please chime in if you know anything about my car because what you see is all i got and i would love to find out more about it

Got started on the bodywork today. Starting with the right rear quarter. It has a crease line right through it as well as a bit of rust around the wheel lip and I guess it had some in the bottom of the boot well, but that had been cut out before I got the car. The crease was very deep at the C pillar, so I cut the quarter as close the the door flange as I could so I could pull it out (Someone had tried before with a slide hammer and mad a big mess that had then been covered with filler) also the tail light had a bit of a gap between it and the panel. The panel was pushed in about 1/4" so some heavy tapping got it back into shape. Started welding the small bit back in but its getting late now and the little kids are in bed, so I can't make noise now.

Michael,

I got the approval of Andre to ship your parts over with his, but he is in South Australia, so there may be a problem getting the parts to you.

I did pick up a '60 Fury the other day that will be a good parts car, if there are other parts that you need.

Mick, you should also score those quarter panel stainless steel trim pieces, as well as any/all side trim, headlight rings, nameplates,
etc, that might be damaged in a collision event--anything that you'd be GLAD to have, in an emergency.

And, to anyone else reading this: if your car is ever in an insurance-claim situation, your carrier will LOVE that you've got
repair parts on hand, and, you can literally NAME your retail-price for those repair-parts, because they are not otherwise
readily available and will save that carrier beaucoup time in trying to locate suitable repair parts.

Dunno what's available in OZ, but there are several companies on this side of the Lake, like kingoftrim.com, which can
restore dinged/dull stainless trim to like-gnu condition.

John could put the trim into PVC tubing and ship them to K-o-T, or elsewhere, and that company could, then, ship the restored
trim pieces to you---this obviously applies to anyone else who may be interested in restoring some-such trim pieces.

Thinking about maybe bying the whole car. Not so much as a parts car, but from the look of it, its better than the one I have. It also has the advantage of being complete. I got my car as an unfinished project that has changed hands a couple of times and I think I am missing quite a few parts. John has also told me it has power brakes, something mine does not have and looks like it never did unless some idiot cut the brake pedal. The one thing thats a positive with mine is that from the pics of some of the other forward look resto's I have seen happening on here, my car is relatively rust free and has already been media blasted so there are not to many hidden nasties on it.

The cost of importing a car to Aus is quite high, In a quick chat with a shipping co here, they told me about $4-5000.00 port to port including all the customs crap you have to pay for, but funny thing is, if its cut in half and put into 2 big wooden crates, it will cost about $1000.00 lol.

Just a side thought, Maybe i should get that convert that fell in half. no cutting required lol

Thanks
Mick

They suggested cutting the car through the "B" pillar and makeing two crates to house the halves in. They said customs would only x ray the crates to make sure it didnt have guns and drugs ect in them and that they would not care that the 2 halves were actually from the same car. They also said that then the car would come as general freight and because its crated up, they can pack other stuff into the container. Thats why it would be cheaper because they normally only ship 1 car/container in case of damage. Price I found so far is aprox $3300.00 for sole use of a container then all the crappy taxes ect that hit you when it gets here, thats about another $2-3000.00. If its cut in half, They just charge by cubic metre.

Yep

At the moment it IS the drivers door , but I will be converting it back to L/H drive in the next few months.

The conversion was only half done and what was done was not really done right anyway, so its going to go
back to orriginal

A little update on the progress

I have cut out the bad bodywork on the r/h rear quarter and am waiting for the repair sections to turn up. I dont think they are going to be big enough, but the hard bit (the wheel arch) should be closer to right than the attempt at forming it that I had myself. I expect to have to add a strip maybe 3 or 4" onto the repair section, but I am slowly getting better with my mig.

While I have been waiting, I cut out a couple of small sections of my very rusty trunk lip and got a long straight piece bent up to match the profile.
The hard part is where it goes around the corner. Those pieces I am making from scratch. I still have to get the side pieces made up but I want to get the quarters welded in before I cut that section out (I dont want to weaken the fin to much by having to many pieces missing at once).

One of the pics is for Niel, it shows the "Dip" level of my car in the rust proofing solution when it was made. Its in an area that I am sure they could not have got to once the quarter panel was on (at least not that neat).

OK a little update

I have finished welding in the repair sections on the R/H/rear of the car, came out not to
bad, bit more panel beating, but its much better than it was.

I got some sort of bad news today though, as i said earlier in the thread, the car had halfway been converted
to right hand drive. I had a guy come and look at how it was done today (engineer) and he has told me to undo
what has been done because its all wrong and wont work, best to put it bach to L/H/drive.

This is quite a blow as being R/H/drive was a big part of why I bought it in the first place.

I have been thinking a lot about this today and I think my best coarse of action is to get another car.

The shopping list for this one is far from completed, but just in big bits, I still need 2 front fenders, 1 inner fender, 1 dash,
1 windshield, 1 filler panel for behind the front bumper, Both tail lights, a full interior, full rubber set, wheels ect and so on.

I still do not know how good the trans is, the brakes are gone and so on.

I am not against restoring the car, but with the freight costs in just getting the bigger parts here (upwards of $1400.00)
its looking more viable to get a better starting point.

Bit depressing really

So from today on, I am looking for another car.

I want to still have the same, as in a 1960 plymouth fury, so any configeration of a 60 plymouth fury will be good, but failing that,
if its anything other than a fury, it must be a 4 drht.

This is because if its a fury, then the numbers ect that its imported with, will be fury numbers and I can choose which body to use.

If its a belvie or savoy, then it will be a parts car and I will want the 4 drht parts to use on the one I have.

I will also be most interested in ones from near the coast for the freight aspect of getting it to a port.

As you can imagine with the fact that I havnt really had this car that long, $$$$ are a concern, so as much as I would love one of the expencive nice ones, its out of my league for now, So factoring in the shipping costs of about $5000.00, I am only looking at under $5000.00 for a car.

I am still a few months away from even being in that position (saving hard already) but if you guys can keep your eyes peeled for something suitable, i would appreciate it greatly.

Mike the problem is the big parts cost big bucks to ship.

I have thought about getting 1 part at a time, but that works out to be more (by a lot)

Easier to handle financialy though.

But with this car and what was already done to it, its really a R/H/d or not at all, not without another one to
use as parts anyway

Lots of firewall repairs. Just made me look at the big picture with this one, its a downer

This is a bit of a blast from the past, but I had a phone call tonight out of the blue from the guy that bought this car from the importer.

Found out that I am the 4th owner of it in Aus, being the importer, Lenny (one I was talking to tonight, the guy I bought it off, then me.

Lenny told me he used to drive this car around here (just thought, I didnt ask if it had been licenced by him, dont think it was), but he was the one that did the right hand drive conversion on it

He says he thinks his brother has the missing body tag and maybe the vin plate, but he does have a permit for the car to be driven in the US just before it was exported.

The car had been painted a mint green before it came over

SAd in a way to know that the car was once a running, driving car and to see what it is now

My bodywork skills have improved a lot with the work I have put into the dodge, so this car might still have a chance yet, but those that re read this, you can see that I got quite down about it

Still not sure wether it would be better to get another one and start from scratch, but the dodge has to be done first now anyway

The ol girl migrated out of its storage shed yesterday

Time to re asses what to do with it

Most likely be a bit of a rat rebuild, just toying with ideas at the moment

If pictures work, there will be 3 of them

I worked out that if I put a 671 blower on it, the carburetors would basically be at bonnet height, so I sat 2 carburetors on the bonnet and a box on top to simulate the air cleaner and then did some checking with the licensing authorities as to whether I could get it on the road and it all fell into a heap.

Not allowed any moving parts to protrude out of the bonnet unless its covered by a metal scoop and the scoop must allow you to see the road 11 meters from your eyes, looking across the scoop

I worked out that I would probably be able to see 11 kilometers ahead looking across the scoop

Oh well, It was a nice idea

I still do not know how good the trans is, the brakes are gone and so on.
What about a Falcon rear axle, disc spindles from a later Mopar, & perhaps a later tranny? The 392 hemi adaptor will let you bolt up a 727 or other tranny. 904 won't work on a hemi, not sure about an A Poly.

Jasmin (the dog) is about the best dog I have ever had, she is 1/2 labrodore 1/2 bull mastiff, but is the laziest lump alive

That was a rare waking moment

I have most of whats needed to get it going again, but theres a lot of work in it

All the doors are rusted along the bottom (fixed the easiest one already), I am thinking of sacrificing a few of the spare
dodge doors to get 1/2 skins to do the rest

Both front guards badly rusted, particularly at the eyebrows, but I have front cuts to repair them

The rear 1/4rs are the biggest drama, I had a go at the r/h one when I first got the car (as seen above) but its not right yet, the left one has no bottom, the last 6" or so has been cut off by someone, I have a repair section for that

The sills arnt that bad, the last 6" or so of the l/h one has been repaired by someone, but very badly, I have to redo that and then the l/h dog leg

Theres really quite a list, part of the reason I put it away

I dont think I will be able to get this car as nice as I want it to be, so I was quite dis heartened about it

My aim is to just do what will make it alive again and see how it pans out

I have put the Buick away for now and I am making an effort to get this welded up

Right rear and the beaver panel are done, I have welded up the inner left and I am in the middle of replacing the lower outer section

I have bought paint for it now
I have given up on the idea of making it pretty and I am using these cars as inspiration.
I have bought a 2K semi gloss black for the body. Chrome below the window height will be deleted.
I have already had the chrome stripped off the front and rear bumpers that I am picking up today.
Just for info, I priced repairing and rechroming the bumpers, it came out north of $4000. the decision to delete the chrome was finalised at that point in time

Well, its back to right hand drive.

I am using Australian 1960 dodge phoenix parts for the conversion.

I have cut off and re positioned the idler arm bracket, mounted up the manual steering box and it all looks good.

The drag link is loose at the pitman arm, so I am fixing that now.

I found I was missing a few vital parts to have it as a LHD car which seemed like a major hassle to find. If I have to make stuff, I prefer
to make stuff thats going to suit how I really want the car to be, and thats is right hand drive.

I have had another engineer come and look and we discussed the car and have come up with a plan for the engineering work. I have done the
necessary paperwork for government engineering approval in principle which lasts for 2 years before you have to re submit it (sometimes they add extra stuff on it if you have to re submit).

So I have 2 years to get this car on the road, so I will be more active on here (and out in the shed)

Lets get this darn car going
