i come in and read over these posts, hoping for a new bit of info, and since it hadnt happened, i took the reins, and called ultra one, just now for an update... i wish i had GOOD news, but all i have is news. The owners have left the car to sit there, because, well, she is what she is.... and the guy at U1 told me that with the economy the way it is, Our Beloved Lady has been moth balled, and put into storage. there is no plan at this time, for when she might be touched again. he said it may be 2 or 3 years, or more, at this point, citing the economy again. There is no money for corporate sponsorship, and in spite of grand plans for a custom trailor to carry her in, with all of her history on displays, etc, etc...as of now, she's in storage somewhere. i asked him about the ultimate plans for her. is she going back to tulsa? or a museum? or what. He says there are no plans, other than the fact that Tulsa was offered a chance to have her come back, at least for a visit, and they TURNED HIM DOWN! They called the car a Political Hot Potato.....saying that the city doesnt have the time, and money to pay the police overtime required for her to come back....wow, what a cop out...(no pun intended.) So, here you have it, the latest, though, not the greatest, news on Miss B. its not enough that she sat in darkness for 50 odd years, but now to find herself back there again? GEEZ! give the ol girl a break. Put her somewhere that she can be appreciated, even if you dont lay another finger on her, just let her be seen....LOL.

im just so afraid that she'll end up like the old "lost" customs from the 50s and 60s. she'll stay in the corner so long, nobody there knows what she is, then one day, she'll pop up in a liquidation auction and "that old rusty plymouth" will sell for next to nothing, to someone who doesnt know, or care what she is. Yes, my mind is running away with me, but it could happen, something so simple as putting the car in storage, and lack of money...she could easily be forgotten. but, really, what can be done...i suppose....but wait and see.

chrome-fins, Thanks for the report--confirms what I expected. I wonder who owes who, what? U one says the owner owes him for work done? owner says U-one did not live up to their agreement?? Even if someone wanted to purchase Ms Belvie, my bet is it would be a real mess to sort everything out. In three -five more years of nothing being done, the only ones who remember the story will be us and the Plymouth club. Tulsa should have it but sounds like they want to be paid to take it off the owners hands. They just as well bury her in damp black soil and let her finish dissolving with some dignity............................MO

Its sad the miss B story. I guess a lot of us have been hit in the hip pocket. I would like to suggest that a plymouth club makes an offer for her but I myself am not really very financial either. The car I bought was also bound for starage after having been away for 10 or so years. I think another 10 would have killed it. With time an a lot of money mine will be all good again. I hope the same can be said for miss B. I will say the same as a lot of other people have said on here that it would have been good if they could have just stabilised the rust, shored up the chassis and put her in a nice glass box to remain the time capsule that she was. Sleep tight miss B

It is sad. I'd bet there isn't a storage facility anywhere which can produce an environment to arrest the rust completely and somehow even if there were, I doubt the money is being spent. Pretty awful attitude for Oklahoma too.

The Tulsa people are just a bunch of a**holes, if is not going to produce any money, then they dont want it. This car should be in the hand of a rich guy like Jay Leno.

In before Neil complains about the vault and how the car should have been welded into some sort of a steel case!

This is actually good news!

This means that Ultra One has not fully destroyed the car. There is hope that a museum could still get the car and display it as it is instead of more futile attempts to restore it.

Argh.... Fame / Publicity BUT No Fortune.......
I left Tulsa around 12.00 Lunch Time on the Sunday, From memory the top Offer for Miss Belv had hit $300k from a Unknown Bidder, I believe the first Bid was $180k.. Everyone Expected More and then Ultra One stepped forward.. I Gaurantee the Present Owners now wish they took the offer, I do too, As more than likely Miss Belv would be in a Museum in a Glass Case Surviving, Rather than in a Storage Unit Rusting...........

Brandon,
Thanks for taking the time to do a little checking up on progress [or lack of] on miss Belvedere. Too bad that she is left in limbo, apparently Ultra One did not accomplish a good enough job of what the owners were hoping for, and therefore not a good advertisement for their product. The actual owners of the car are clueless, and were easily led into dreams of a traveling exhibit, which is doubtful will ever happen.

The city fathers in Tulsa do not want the car back as they consider Tulsarama 2007 egg on their face, a testimony to hurried decisions and poor planning when the car was entombed.

As time goes on, there will be less and less chance of any museum wanting the car, and it will most likely be sold as salvage, unfortunately.

I think most people were unaware of this car being in the ground until they dug it up. I think most people had to be told the
story of it. I think if its in 20 days or 20 years, people will have to be told what this car is/was if it ever sees daylight. I think
it is a sad situation and feel someday people will be looking at a few tires and a panel or two on a pile of rust . . .

THAT is exactly what i am afraid of...and of course, itll be a local thing, so nobody will think to say anything about it. you wont hear about it til someone says "oh, yea, that thing was sold off and crushed a couple years ago"

"REALLY???!!!!! WELL WHY THE F! DIDNT SOMEONE SAY SOMETHING AT THE TIME??!!"

"Well, it was just a rusty old car. "

i can see it happening.......

Unless ultra1 will forward interested parties to the current owner. This car needs to be kept in front of people both online and in magazine articles.

I've been following this story since Miss B was unearthed and it has become quite disheartening. One thing that keeps coming to mind regarding the cleaning or preservation of Miss B is that iron artifacts such as shipwrecks or items from shipwrecks may have the same problems and deteriorating processes going on as Miss B. That being said, I looked up some online stuff about preserving and cleaning rusty iron and it looks like maybe Ultra One should borrow John's (Big M) huge electrolysis tank and start there! It also looks like the storage environment has to be somewhat specific in regards to humidity and temperature to prevent further deterioration...poor Miss B. Here's a link to what I found about rusty iron:

If the Russians can perfectly preserve Vladimir Lenin, we Americans should be able to figure out how to preserve Miss B.

The car needs cleaned the rest of the way and to be sealed in solid resin cube like a 20X8X5 bug. Then bought by a museum and displayed with all the facts, time capsules and so on.

Tulsa screwed up and they know it. Dumb ass okies from muskogees.
What a screw up on the building of the tomb. I'll bet the guys shoveling dirt on top of it said, "These people are stupid. This sucker is going leak like crazy!!"

My belief is that the company that had/sold that concrete & gun-iting process approached the City fathers (& MOTHERS-)
and offered to provide that vault-system at no cost to the City, and probably asserted that that protocol would 'work'
just fine....

Their biggest boo-boo was in not-sealing the lids to each other, and to the sides of the vault.

The pics that we all took of the vault show that it leaked like a sieve, from above, and around its circumference.

Mike, a reading of this board will show that Miss Belvie was first discussed by us around 1996-1997.

Edit:...hmmm; there used to be a LOT more 'pages' to this board, going way-back to the very earliest
discussions, that were archived on the message boards that pre-ceded this website's current layout
and construction.

I'd guess that less than 1% of the U.S. knew about this car. (before it came out of the ground) . . whatever the actual
percent that know about it now, I still say not many people are aware of it - it's a shame it turned out the way it has -

That would probably be for the best!
Then John could build a special display for her and Miss Belvedere would become a local tourist trap!

He could sell t-shirts,postcards,he could charge $4.00 to have your photo taken with her and $1 to rub the fins for good luck!

Who knows, maybe John could try getting her running again and then he could drive her slowly up and down the isles of cars until she fixes herself up again!

GOOD idea, but a little-late, Lisa.

The rusty/crappy fluid which could have gone into those 'globes' shoulda been the stuff that was pumped outa " Da Vault"
a couple days before the car was ceremoniously hoisted out of it.

Now THAT would be a display!

A rectangular plastic enclosure with the 'car' residing about 1/2 way submerged in crap/rust, until you shook up the
enclosure, to simulate the water which leaked into Da Vault, from ground level.

That would sell!

Maybe we should contact the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce about this memento.

Maybe the Smithsonian would want it. I'm not sure they'll accept an artifact that defines five decades of stupefying ineptitude on the part of the American public in general, but it is at least interesting.

Maybe it should be sold as what it truly is: a $2k parts car. Use it to restore another Belvedere coupe and scrap what's left.

The best idea I can think of is putting it where it belongs. Lower it back into its tomb and rebury it. The rust repair company defrauded the car owner(s) and ruined the car.

There's really nothing that can be done to save it at this point. It's not a cherry original and it's all screwed up from its as-unearthed condition. For better or for worse, it should have been placed in a museum exactly as it came out, even before Boyd had a chance to smash the glass.

There will never be a satisfactory conclusion to the story. It can never be restored and it can never return to its buried condition. It's just a mess.

Perhaps a poor analogy, but, in legalese...the effect is called un-ringing a bell.

Any body actually know who owns the "orphan" now, other than the hoard of leeches who will claim liens on it?

Neil, you must appear in a strange legal environment. In the 50 years I've been admitted to the various City, County, State and several Federal Bar Associations, I've yet to hear a reference to "unringing the bell" in any of the courtrooms. But then I'm told strange thing are said to occur in California. LOL

It still baffles me that they didn't figure out a way to seal the compartment when they put her in there, I mean all that cosmoline was a good idea I guess, but it was buried in a place that sees lots of rain yearly, had it been buried in say Arizona, man what a sight that would have been when she was pulled out of her darkness. It would be cool to get a good solid parts car and switch everything over, but then that won't be Mrs. B it would just be a reflection of her former self.

C'mon, Walt....that's a hoary legal precept!

Once a witness (e.g.) mentions that the defendant passed a lie detector exam, and the judge admonishes the jury to
ignore & give no legal weight to that testimony....the 'bell' has been rung !

Bill, the Mensa-dropouts, in Tulsa, '57, overlooked sealing the LIDS (3) to the vault; but, by Exner, the
walls and floor were water proofed!

Ok, I'll bite......I called this thing along with MANY others way back in 2005, that this thing was gonna be a rusty POS when it came out..Of course, she was..Everybody has a basement..They ALL leak at some point..Now, with that said AGAIN, so what would everybody say if this thing hadda came out of the ground in Excellent conditon? I can hear it now....
"Oh, the horror! They are actually DRIVING a piece of history?? What are they thinking? After winning the d@mn thing, they are gonna actually try and DRIVE it?? How dare them!!"

And you know this is how it woulda been....So, maybe this thing deserves to be "restored/cleaned up" to where someone can actually try and enjoy looking at it...

In retrospect, the Tulsa folks should have unearthed this turd in the middle of the night about six months early. Pump out that vault, sweep it clean, buy the twin from '57 Heaven, slip the good one in there, throw a six pack of Billy Beer in the trunk, and cover up the whole mess. None of us would have been the wiser! Give the new owner the keys and have him fire it up and drive it right out of town, happily ever after! End of story.

Meanwhile, the turd gets crushed into a one foot by one foot by one foot cube and is catapulted into the ocean, never to be spoken of again.

entombed her, so poorly, in 1957.

I would pay money to see that.

But if you look at the whole thing as a way to boost up the sales of the car, the rust inhibator, the City of Tulsa and get people out to do things, Both events, the burial and the un-earthing did their job, they both got the pulic out and put it back in peoples minds anytime you can get free talk/chatter it's good for the hobby as a wholeglad it made the news.

I have come across a 57 Plaza 2dr Post since the unearthing, and tried my best not to buy it, but it was to no avail, Ginger, the car in question now is in line with the rest of the fleet

I'm just happy as a clam to hear Miss B is still around - there has to be a place for her somewhere, especially considering vehicles I've seen that were much worse in their "before" condition (wrecked, sunk, exploded, crapped on and left to rot), yet made it into museums thanks to proper cleaning & preservation techniques. Considering the environment she had to put up with (very hard on the makeup) I think she did rather well. The vault contractor? Well, that was what I've come to expect from "experiments" that carry a monetary benefit for the experimentor. I'm just surprised that some combination car-buff & funeral director/forensic pathologist didn't pass a note to Tulsa's city counsel under the table, since top-seal vaults for people work about as well as Miss B's did. Had they put the lids in the ground first, drilled some drainage holes through them, put the car on about a 6-inch pedestal on top of the lids and then lowered the precast sides & "bottom" into the hole upside-down, it wouldn't have cost any more and she may have had a chance. A small inspection port under a valve box & lid, marked "water" to camouflage it from would-be vandals, wouldn't have hurt either. But that's water under the bridge now - or in the motor I guess. The above suggestion to contact some of those preservation companies is excellent - they could help with some tips for stopping any ongoing corrosion. Perhaps the outfit that worked on raising & preserving the Hunley? Perhaps a marine museum around the Great Lakes area would be better for fresh-water issues. Whatever it takes; after all, a cool babe like Miss B would be a terrible thing to waste.

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride, and also Ms Belvedere would somehow be restored, without sacrificing any other of the few remaining survivors from that time. It just kills me to read, and see what wishful ignorance did to a once perfectly good automobile, and how no one from Tulsa now wants anything to do with the results of their folly.

The City fathers-and-muthers didn't even use Elmers-Glue-All to seal up the vault's lids.

And, their last-best defense of the car was to enclose it in a stitched-together plastic-nylon baggie, instead
of putting it into a welded-up steel enclosure (like they did, for their precious Time Capsule---which was found,
floating, on the accumulated seepage, but, in 100% as-good-as-1957 condition when it was cut open).

Ms. Belvie is nothing but a grim laughingstock, to Tulsa.

And, think of the excitement and euphoria (the Boydster's presence notwithstanding), if the steel enclosure had been
lifted out of the vault and the 'coffin' cut open in front of the assemblage, on the stage at the convention center!
