Location: Parts Unknown | The echoed pattern of the forward thrusting roof carried out as the side color sweep on the 57 Fireflite 2HT makes this the ultimate side profile that Exner ever oversaw. I'd drop this car about 3", but WOW !!!! .... ... what a stunner !

Location: Parts Unknown | There are certain elements of the 58 I prefer over the 57, but that sidetrim/sweep was as good as it got, and I lament that they did not save it for 58! Even being a lover of the top-down cars, I gotta admit, that roof and that sidesweep are the ultimate statement in balance and drama ever put to mobile sheetmetal.

Location: Under the X in Texas | DeSoto never painted the underside of their cars body color, it should be gray self-etching primer. Nor was the differential pumpkin ever gloss brilliant red; red oxide was original. And plain vinyl inserts in the seats were the inexpensive way to go instead of buying an SMS cloth. The tail pipes don't enter the bumper venturis as original though most would consider that a plus. With 10 minutes work the restorer could and should have rattle can blackened the brilliant blue shock absorbers. The car is well worth 2/3rds of the opening bid to participate in this auction because I have to wonder what else I can't see in the too-small photos provided.

Location: Parts Unknown | If I were seriously looking for a 57 Flite coupe, the biggest problem I would have with the car is the red paint. I just don't like red cars. But in the bigger picture, that ain't much to get whooped up about ! Note this is yet another top-line Fireflite with manual windows !

I have to say though, while the exhaust exiting out the bumper outlets beneath the tail lamps is cool, I'd be leary to risk exposing some good lenses to it.

Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | GORGEOUS!! My favorite FL car and in stunning colors. I love it. I don't understand why the car is standing four inches too high though. It looks like a "donk" the way he has it there. Good, better, best... I have to say though, while the exhaust exiting out the bumper outlets beneath the tail lamps is cool, I'd be leary to risk exposing some good lenses to it. I remember cars running around Milwaukee during the mid to late 1960s with rotted bumpers were the exhaust exited through them. I remember seeing '57 Chevys with their the reverse light "pod" block-offs removed and the exhaust re-routed through them. They rotted there, too. K.

Location: The Mile High City | Totally spectacular!! Worth every penny of the asking price - the only down side? Get one rock chip from road use and the value goes way down I bet this car looks better than the day it rolled off the assembly line! Here is my favorite photo. They must have used a ladder. Either that, or Dikembe Mutumbo is the current owner. (1957 Fireflite up high.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 1957 Fireflite up high.jpg (44KB - 127 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Well, I'm not a big fan of red either but I definitely love this one, the grey makes it an outstanding color combination. I wonder if all vinyl seats were an option in 1957? I think the upholstery could have been tweaked a bit by "pulling in" of the seams between the center inserts and the outer bolsters. The 1957 300-C interiors are very similar to this pattern, and they were factory done that way - with the seams pulled in. It gives them a slightly more "cushy" look. It has Manual Brakes !!! I have to say though, while the exhaust exiting out the bumper outlets beneath the tail lamps is cool, I'd be leary to risk exposing some good lenses to it. ************************************************************** The exhaust ports were a great design idea from that Geo. Jetson School of Personal Rocketry and a real attraction "gadget" for those of us that are attracted to such silliness. The only time a person would ever know these things are functional is when you start the car up on a cold morning. Otherwise, they pretty much just hang there for looks. Inasmuch as I like "e. all of the above", I forego the chilly morning start up visual part of the programming and duct my lines out the back, keeping them high enough to be out of sight, with a 45 degree downturn at the bumper and a flush "sausage cut", again to keep the pipes hidden. This gets the exhaust clear of the car and chrome as well as anything. Then I restore the exhaust ports with the original inserts so everything looks like it is 1957 (58) and all is well. Best of both worlds. No, I don't get those frosty morning start up visuals, but the chrome stays nice !

Expert Posts: 1488 Location: New Castle PA | Yes, a great job of putting this car together -- nicer than any of mine in most ways. My only comments, like those above, are that with "just a little bit" of care, this could have been "correct" (has wrong doorpanels and seat inserts, painted trunk insulation, painted underside of hood when it shouldn't be, etc.). The car used to have a white roof and lower sweep. I don't know why he changed it, or which is factory correct. Not a big deal, and he had the right to do whatever he wished, but if he spent $100K as claimed, I think he should have spent $101K and made things "correct".

Location: Parts Unknown | Ed, If the objective was "charcoal", isn't this color a bit light ? Or did DeSoto have a more "silver" metallic in 57 ? I don't seem to remember a color like this.

Expert Posts: 1488 Location: New Castle PA | You are probably correct, Doc, but I'm not sure from the small pictures, the quality of the photograph, my computer monitor, etc. that I'm personally in a position to judge colors. I have pictures of my Firedome, for example, that look RED in some pics, PINK, in some, and ORANGE in others. Same car.
