I am going to start collecting vin and data plate/P&T plate info from any '56 Dodge owner I can find. If they have an IBM card, that would be even better. I would like to compare that info with the actual options, etc. that the cars have. I would especially like to get data plate info for D500 cars made in LA (Vin numbers starting with 426......). Through this research, (in general) I hope to understand the meaning of the data plate and IBM card codes (or at least some of them). A more limited objective is to determine what codes denote a D500 car. If anyone has, or knows of someone who has a '56 Dodge who could help, please let me know. I have had some help in my conversations with Neil and Tim Dupont. I have also gained some insights from the article on '55 Dodges by Mike Peterson. I can be contacted by email at rakruger45@q.com
Thanks, Bob Kruger

Bob, A picture of my data plate is posted on this forum. I ordered the IBM cards and will have them in a few weeks. I was going to post pictures of the cards when I get them. I'll certainly be interested in helping out since I also am interested in researching and documenting my C.R. D500 Golden Lancer. You've got my number. Talk to you soon.

I got a copy of my IBM card from Chrysler LLC today. It was faded in some places but legible. My car was definitely a factory D500 since the engine number (D500-7518) is written on the card. I can't determine what brakes or springs were installed from the information. the card has a selection for "Heavy Duty Package", but it's not marked, and some additional info sent with the packet indicates that this was offered only on Coronet V-8 and 4-Door Sedans and Club Sedans. It looks to possibly have been a police car option. There's a "Power-Pac 8 Cylinder" and a "Power-Pak 6 Cylinder" option (?). Neither are checked. Other options pertaining to suspension or brakes are "Heavy Duty Shocks and Springs" and "11 Inch Brakes." Again, none were checked.

That's about it. It didn't tell me very much about the original springs and brakes on my car or any factory D500 for that matter. I thought there might be a "D500 Special" option, but I didn't see it. Maybe "11 Inch Brakes" are for an engine only D500. Was "Heavy Duty Shocks and Springs" checked for a D500 car or were they standard issue for D500? Who knows?

Attached is another shot of the firewall data plate, and the card is below it.

Hey, Doug; could you kindly scan and send me a complete image of your car's IBM card?

The one, above, is kinda large.

Yours is the second LA-built D500 IBM card I've seen, and your card is a LOT more
legible than is the one that I've got.

It, too, has a series of 'floating' option numbers on it, which confirm SOMETHING
about the car's equipment.

Doug, does your car have a manual trannie in it?

Hey d500 Neil,

I'll send it to your PM. My car has pushbutton PowerFlite.

OK, as per a PM to Doug, without giving up my proprietary research, Doug's car is coded for having the option code "48_"
which, in his car's case has a "1", so it has the :"Misc Extra Eqp" option category, with (only-) option #1 in that category
being installed in his car.

Unfortunately, I don't know what that option #481 might include, or reference.

The other LA-built D500 IBM card that I have has that car having, only, a different option category : "Misc Spl Eqt" :"47_"
with the option #2 encoded onto it. Dunno what "472" would reference, either.

Doug's car does have some nice option Groups on it, though: heater/defroster; day/nite mirror; turn signals(!!)--they WERE an
option, in 1956; LT O.S. mirror; bumper guards; tinted glass; Jiffy Jet; even floor mats (originally); underhood light; undercoating;
courtesy lights; and power brakes; power windows; power steering; power seat-----at least, this is my interpretation of the 1956
Dodge Options & Accessories---how close did I get???

It also has a special "Power Equipment:" option, which may be included in the above listings, but, probably should NOT be included
in them, since it has this particular option group, in addition to the above items.

Unfortunately, again, the 56 D500's are seen to have differing option-numbers appearing under the "Power Equipment" category, and
my other LA-built D500 IBM card has NO option code under this "Power Equipment" option.

Doug's D500 does kinda share something in common with that other LA-D500, though: both cars carry two sub-options under the
"Tires & Tubes" category; both cars have option #3, but Doug's also has option #9, whereas that 'other' D500 has option #8
on its IBM card. Again, I dunno what those sub-options might be; "tires & tubes" are kind of ephemeral-OEM-items (long-gone-
by-now).

Unfortunately, neither car has a coding for "Wheel Eqp" on their IBM cards.

Both cars do have coding for "Stone Shields"---I know that makes y'all feel better, but, there-it-is.

As a separate option, Doug's car is coded for having "Tubeless Tires".

Its paint should be Sapphire White over gallant Gold over Sapphire White, and its interior trim is White/Black.

Its BDY is a V/8 model Custom Royal 2-dr HT, which (as we-all-can-read) was a relatively late-production car 7/26/56).

Two things which are unique to L.A.-built Dodges (besides the physical layout OF the P/T plates) are those back-less mounting screws
on the P/T plates, and the fact that a strip of masking tape was left lying partially-across the middle area of the P/T plates,
when the cars' bodies were painted.

That strip of tape probably held a Broadcast Sheet, for the purpose of confirming how that particular car body was to be painted,
but why virtually-every car, over quite a few model years, would be painted with that piece of masking tape left-lying across the
P/T plate, shielding it from receiving any-much paint, is a complete mystery to me (as are a LOT of build-details regarding the
56 Dodges).

On a lot of re-painted L.A. built Dodges, you can still clearly see the raised edges of the masking tape's existence on the P/T plates.

That strip of masking tape was removed from the P/T plate while the body-paint was still fresh....

Why Dose it say "TRUCK"
on the Data paper?
Is it from a D500 Pickup Truck?
