Location: Plymouth Spaceport | Does anyone here have any tips for removing hairline wiper arm scratches from a windshield?
I can't seem to catch my fingernail on them so I am hoping they can be buffed out.

Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | the rule of thumb , is if your finger nail doesn't catch em your good to go . just find a good buffing kit and go for it . i've had to pass on free glass because it was unrepairable -------------------------------------------------------------------------later |

I have read through all the links and most of what I've read sounds discouraging,but since I can't really catch my nail on the marks I am going to try buffing them out.
Other than that the '60 bubble windshield is perfect. |

Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | i came across one for free but they were tooooo deep . if you try the deep ones , they may clear up but i'm told by glass suppliers that the vision would be blurred . i still wished i would have tried though . mine on big red is starting to fog and delaminate------------later

I have some deep scratches that I buffed out with a kit I bought at a car show. They were very deep scratches. Your info is right, you can see a distortion in the affected areas. At least now they are smooth instead of white lines across the glass. |

I'll tell you exactly how to do it. The windshield of the 56 New Yorker I'm restoring had wiper marks that I could just barely catch. And I very sucessfully polished them out with no visual distorsion and at very small cost.
Order from McMaster-Carr a piece of 1/2" hard felt they describe as suitable for glass polishing. 1 square foot is the minium order. You will need about a 4 inch square piece.
Next go to your local glass shop and mooch a baby food jar full of cerium oxide. Failing that order a pound at about $25.
Next take a 5" pad for your DA sander and trim it down to 3" diameter.
Next cut a 3" diameter disc of your felt and glue it to the DA disc.
Next add water to your cerium oxide to make a medium consistency paste.
NOW THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. PUT YOUR DA SANDER IN ORBITAL MODE. DO NOT EVER EVER EVER USE IT IN STRAIGHT GRIND MODE.
All you need now is a CLEAN spritz bottle and CLEAN water.
Clean your glass very well. Smear some paste on it, wet the felt, spritz the glass, and commece to polish ALL OVER the glass.
OK I LIED. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART. DO NOT CONCENTRATE YOUR POLISHING ON THE SCRATCHES.
Unless you want distorsion you must polish wide areas, pretty much the whole expance of glass. If you polish out only the scratches you will see distorsion. If you polish the whole thing you are removing glass evenly.
ALWAYS keep the glass wet. Keep reapplying paste and keep spritzing. Do not let the paste start to dry. Keep the DA moving just like you were buffing a car.... You are.
Do as I said and you will not shatter the glass. it will not even get warm to the touch.
Every once in a while towel off the glass and check your progress. You will soon get the feel of it.
It's messy so if you are doing this in the car cover the car with plastic.
This will remove wiper scratches and acid haze but will not remove the micro pitts from sand etc.
Expect to take about 2 to 3 hours or a six pack. Which ever comes first...................Bob.
