| I've had this problem on 2 cars now, even with lowering the hinges as far as they will go in slotted holes against firewall, the back of the hood sticks up like an inch, and is spring-loaded even on my 60 Plymouth....just wondering if there's something obvious I'm missing here? The hinges don't seem excessively wore out.
I thought maybe the front end is too low, but that's not the case as the door to fender gap is perfect.
Ideas, experience anyone? |

Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | I'd say that the rivets (swiveling points) and the holes are worn out. I have drilled out rivets and made over dimension new rivets and enlarged the holes for the new bigger rivets. That operation usually takes care about the excessive free play |

Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | i had the same problem with the left side of big red , it was that way when i bought her . i tried every adjustment possible and lithium grease on pivets . it needed a quarter of an inch . so it left me no choice other than to elongate the mounting holes to allow for the quarter inch down movement . once elongated no one will ever know but you ------------------------------------------------------------------------later |

Location: Williams California | Another thing to try is using a body shim on the front hood hinge bolts. I have used this methid before with some success.

Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | Wizard is right-your hinge pivot rivets are worn out. Drill them out and take them to a toolmaker to make you some new oversize rivets. I had this done to mine and they are absolutely mint now. Before I did this, whenever I lifted the hood and then closed it, I would have to walk to each back corner of the hood and push it down so that it didn't look unsightly.

Try soaking all of the pivot points with a spray lube like LPS2, grease is too heavy to penetrate. |

Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | I would not recommend doing that! That was what I tried first and then the hood would not hold up it's own weight anymore. Good for Christine assembly line moments....

Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | lithium spray on penetrating grease will get where ya need it . from the way it's stated , it's not a problem of holding it's own weight but being too high , do whatcha will but redoing the holes worked great for me . just as a side note !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i had my hinges off to strip em of all crud , inspect condition and repaint , including removing the springs . the wear was not noticeable at all , thats why i elected to redo the wholes . i even tried a spare hinge and got the same reveal -----------------------------------later

| Excellent, thanks to all, I'll try some things. I did WD-40 the hinges beforehand, got them loosened up. On my 58, the back of the hood will push down by hand, and stay there, after closing, but this one has lots of resistance. It's amazing to think the hood was opened enough times to wear the pivot points! You would think it's a GM or something

Location: Under the X in Texas | Rear hood height adjustment requires REVERSE LOGIC. I'm not an engineer so just trust me on this one. I've been employing this fix for 40 years on my cars.
Rather than add a washer under the forward mounting bolt between the hinge and the hood sheet metal, mount it under the REAR. You will be amazed at the result. I seldom find that two washers are needed per side. You may need to get some hardware store thin washers to achieve the perfect fit you are seeking.
Try it before you criticize it. |

Location: Hay Lakes, Alberta, Canada | The hood on my one '57 stays up on it's own still... I realized why the other day! Someone has put small helper springs inside of the hinge springs. Hardly noticeable! :D
Can sprung hinge springs cause the hood corners to stay up, as well as not hold up the hood anymore? |
