This looks like the same car that was at the Russo-Steele auction this January.

Beautiful car, no doubt, but I'm dissappointed to see, even at this 'level', that they still found the need to cut corners while painting the engine-bay.
Is it that hard to remove the heaterbox while painting the area? Or remove some hoses from the engine while it's painted (in the car)?

I wonder what it will go for.

This car, VIN LP2E68140, sold for $62,700 incuding commision at Russo-Steele, so I'm thinking it will do 40s-50s.

I'm surprised that this is a manual with that engine. From the other threads on manual transmissions, I thought even the most generic V8 was too much for the manual.

That engine is NOT original for that car in that configuration. In '58 the dual quad 318 was a FURY exclusive engine, the option motor in everything was the 350 golden commando.

If someone's going to claim that they have a one-of-one car, then they need to provide documentation (build sheet) that supports the claim.

Never seen a body tag like the one shown here E0523L...  Is this unique to cars built in Evansville ?

Yes, Evansville cars had these. Here's the one from my convertible, built close to this car.

CORRECT! But let me re-phrase your statment. The ENGINE, 'MAY" be correct. The 2,4's on top of it, are waht's not correct. Those WCFB's are '57. '58's had AFB's

look at the driver's side front fender, where it meets the hood,,,,,,,,, horrible in there!

Totally unrelated, but in photo 383.jpg there is a speed sign showing "24 mph" .... WTF ? Why not 26.4 ?

What happened to the 10-15-20-25-30-35 increments ? Is this a "Florida" thing ?

It would be fun to see the build sheet on this one. There is no way to state that is was one of one built, but it is one of one existing today! It probably started as a station wagon!

Granted, the '58 Fury engine, was (in theory) not available in other models.
But it was still a 318 with two 4-bbl WCFB carburetors (see the '58 service manual page 383).

The AFB's were only for the 350 and the 318 Super Pak which had only one 4-bbl (see the '58 service manual page 394).

There is no "theory" about it, of course the service manual will cover it because it was essentially a carry-over from '57 and is the standard engine in the Fury.
Could this set-up have been added at some point at the dealer, YES! Was it delivered from the factory, my money says NO until I see the IBM card which for anyone looking to cash in on a convertible should be more than willing to provide especially to back up this HUGE conflation; "THIS IS THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND KNOWN TO EXIST WITH THIS VERY SPECIAL DRIVE TRAIN." Those aren't my words, it's the seller of this car verbatim. In this case and since more than 50 years has passed and this is NOT the original owner of this car the only responsible stance to take regarding this is skeptical given the other obvious liberties taken within the "restoration." And I'm hesitant to even call it that since the engine compartment looks like it was painted with rattle can spray paint. I'm not trying to he hyper critical with this car or any others but if you're going to make big claims, pay the $45 bucks and provide the IBM card. It will only help to back up the truth if it's being told.

I don't have my '58 books (library) anymore. I remember seeing a '57 Fury(318) having WCFB's and a '58 Fury (318) having AFB's I thought the only 2, 4 equipped Mope in '58 with WCFB's, was the 300-D?

I guess it's just me, but this color does ABSOLUTELY nothing for this car IMO........Is it an original 58 color??? I mean, enough with the red amd white, but pick something other than this color............

Check the underside of the decklid

Real "professional" job there also.

NOS door panels.....with SCREWS in the bottom to hold them on???
WTF..."I don't think so, Tim!!!"

These kind of cars when offered up at these prices should be darn near, if not close to, perfect in the small details,
many of which would be simple and cheap to fix.

Since you brought it up, the door panels and rear quarter panels should have silver mylar sections too. The seat material is not the correct convertible inserts. So, it maybe "NOS", but it's not correct NOS.

What did the original convertible seat material look like? It should be different than the hardtop materials but in the same pattern right? Those seat covers look like they were bought through sms or something, the stitch work looks totally right but they were just installed very poorly.

Here's the correct material. Called "dogbone" pattern, I believe SMS sells the stuff. The stitching on the rear seat doesn't look right.

Bluebonnet Blue is a correct 58 color. May not be exact to the original.

Thanks for the info, that is why this site is extremely useful, I'd never have known if you didn't post that. I saw this car as it was discussed some time ago and the whole interior was wrong, it has since been changed to be closer to factory but there is obviously lots of nuance things wrong with this car which will prevent it from fetching a high dollar figure. I'd like to see the "before" resto pics to see what was done because we all can see HOW it was done.

I also take issue with this statement : "THIS NUMBERS MATCHING CAR IS THE RESULT OF AN EXTENSIVE AND SPECTACULAR RESTORATION INCLUDING AN NOS INTERIOR, STAINLESS EXHAUST SYSTEM, SHOCKS, AND NEW WIDE WHITE WALL TIRES." Oh how I'd love to get a peek at the factory IBM card and looking under the hood and in the trunk one can see what an "extensive and spectacular restoration" they did. It's a nice car so long as you overlook all of the incorrect things about it. Extensive and spectacular.. yeah.

I would like the factory air in the tires, if no one else needs it.

Plus the key fob.

And one of the lug nuts; not sure which one I need, I have to check the numbers.

Dunno if Dogbone was the material put into the verts, but this car would look pretty, with Blue Dogbone in it.

Speaking of Pretty, this pretty-vert happens to have manual steering and brakes on it, to go along
with its manual trannie.....and dual 1958 carbs, on a 318 engine.

Yes, that dogbone material was the insert material used on convertibles.

Did the 1958 318 c.i. base Fury have carry-over 1957 WCFB's and/or DID the 1958 WCFB versions carry different brass tag
ID's on them?---I'll bet that the 1958 WCFB's WERE different (-tagged) from the 1957 Fury WCFB's.

Did PLY put the 'football' air cleaners onto the base-318/WCFB Fury engines?

This car carries its coil on the driver's side of the intake manifold. In 1957, with the 'snorkle' type air cleaners, the coil was
installed on the rear of the passenger's side of the intake manifold.

Could the coil be installed on either side of the intake manifold, or, was this 'left-side' installation a purely 1958 protocol?

The '58 football air cleaners seem to take up less space than the 57 snorkles, which may account for the coil being
able to be installed onto the driver's side of the intake manifold.

The stock Fury motor was identical to the '57 version but it does/should have the wcfb's and oval air cleaners. The coil is mounted on the rear passenger side top of the intake manifold.

I bought my 58 convert in around 1980, it still had the original interior (If you could call it that), it was rough but it was not the dog bone stuff, it had the same material as in the Belvedere hardtop. At the time i replaced it with a modern material that would hold up better. And it did, its still in the car and in good shape.
the car for sale is real nice, I think a little pricey, but to each its own. HAPPY MOTORING! Victor.

That's odd, because according to the interior trim guide, that's the correct stuff. Also, my convertible, VIN LP2E66942, built pretty close to this car at the same place, has that dogbone style inserts. It is original interior, even had the hand written build sheet under the rear seat cushion.

I, obviously, don't know the history of Victor's 58 Belvie vert, but, replacing OEM seat material with something close-but-
available has always been a common procedure in maintaining a car; and, sometimes in the 'restoration' of a car.

Until recently, the correct 57 Dodge vert-cloth ("Gotham Texture') was not available, even at SMS, so a lot of Dodge verts
(even, the $190K-guy, sold at 57 Heaven's auction) have had the hardtop ("Staccato") cloth installed in them.

Now/recently, SMS appears to have Gotham Texture (which was also used on the Custom Sierra wagons) loomed-up and
available in both the red/black and the brown/black motifs.

The other two styles of Gotham Texture are 2-tone blue, and green, so, SMS probably can dial-in those colors onto their loom
if anyone were to order those 'rare' colors.

Ok, but, from the Carter (or, 'your' own) records, are the 58 Fury WCFB's different (brass tag-number-codings) from the 57
Fury V800 WCFB carbs ?

I can't imagine they are different number castings but I don't know the answer to that for absolute certain.

..No, not casting numbers; actual Part Numbers, reflecting different internal jetting and settings, etc.

Externally identical items, but internally, differently set up.

nobody mentioned some of the more important things pertaining to the integrity of this car.... look at the trunk photos.... where are the body mounts!!!!!????? you can see the trunk is made from sectionally welded panels as patches [what you can see where no matting is present- they forgot to drill holes for, make the structure of, or covered over the rearmost body mounts. look at the side pic- i say poorly installed JC whitney rocker caps. as for the seat inserts, it may have been plant-related, a nice original 'very i looked at 10 yra ago had the same seat insert material [with tinsel] as the 58 sport suburban i just did, and 3 58 belv's of mine. ironically, i have the green dogbone inserts in a 2dr wagon- the seat covers [upholstery] carrier mopar tags, was told by prev owner they were NOS items that he bought and had installed by his upholsterer....
there were WCFBs on the 58 318 with ovals, i recently learned thought 58 output is still 290hp, the cam specs are different than 57, thus jetting/metering is slightly different for the adjusted powerband that yields the same horsepower, at lower RPM... i thought both 57 and 8 318 dual v800's had the .405" lift cams.... non-fury dual quad engine in 58= golden commando 350. if this was any variant of a fact dual quad car, it would have a 150 speedo. the seats all have sweat stains or weather stains on the inserts as well, door panels are incorrect, warped, and basically suck... sad someone paid so much at auction, but it the ones with deep pockets that pay for shiny things, with no knowledge of the vehicle itself....

may be hard to see... but here's the green dogbone in a 2dr wagon, the frt seat would be the same as a 'vert or hardtop [folding] but wagon rear seats are unique...

funny- looking at the pic now i think the samples posted earlier tricked me! this has more of a shape like S's... but the same rubbery shape-on-fabric material though- seems more waterproof like you'd want for a 'vert just in case!.... too many cars to remember the little details!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the kind you have there is 57 Plymouth Conv inserts.

Bring a Trailer

His and Hers: 1958 Plymouth Belvedere Convertibles

This seller is offering two restored 1958 Plymouth Belvedere convertibles, one in Toreador Red and one in BlueBonnet Blue with a rare dual-quad engine/transmission combination. These cars weren’t common even when new, so seeing two for sale at the same time is unusual. These have some of the all-time great rear fins. Find the red one here on eBay and the blue one here on eBay in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Over at forwarlook.net, this seller has been getting raked over the coals for his restorations that look to be done for the novice buyer and not someone looking for a well restored and original car. those guys forget that not all buyers care about originality and correctness.

That certainly seems to be the case with this seller! With most of these dealers, you can expect a certain bit of puffery in the description, but perhaps this dealer takes it a bit too far - or so their building reputation indicates.
