Hej Bob,

it's first time to see your thread, you are crazy to jigsaw the dash, but it's cool to see a RHD DeSoto, and the result is more than perfect.

Thanks Tom, it is starting to come together. We have done so much on the conversion I keep forgetting it must look strange to the rest of the world! After Easter the dash should be fully back together and the radio installed so it will really look the part.

This is coming along very nicely, you are doing such a fantastic job, your skills are very evident by the completed work thus far!

Do you plan on insulating the body for road noise like originally done, with fiberglass matting ( dash/cowl areas) and acoustic deadener /undercoating on the floors, or do you have plans to use other material or anything at all?

I once drove a frame-off restored Mopar that had none of the sound deadening materials replaced and it was the noisiest thing on wheels I've ever driven at highway speeds.

Hello Ian, first off I am the project manager and financier with a fantastic team of mates who are artisans with metal, wiring, fibreglass, paint and mechanical aptitude. Without them this project would not have happened. I get to say what gets done and when I'm not happy with the result (which isnt often). I say how I want the car to look, the special features like placement of the push buttons and the trans brake, intrgrating the new AC slides and switches so they look original, how large I want the back wheels to be, where I want the alternator, AC compressor and power steering pump to go and these guys make it work. I welcome input from the team (and have heated discussion about my ideas). I still get to do some hands on stuff but am busy running a business which in turn helps fuel my classic car addiction.

As regards insulation against road noise, we have the 8 or so rubber spacers which insulate the chassis from the shell. I chose not to spray body deadener on either side of the floor because it looks so good in paint. My upholsterer assures me that the materials he will be using on the floor, roof, firewall and behind the back seat will do the job. He has done three Beasty cars for me sofar and all have minimal road noise. However, I still like to be able to hear the stereo rumble of a V8 in full flight.

I do not know if this is supposed to be a trade secret or not, but do you have a budget for this build and if so, how is it going?

For everything you have done and I can see being done, this is surely going to be a high priced car when finished?

Just love it and to echo some coments from above, you can park it at my place (cheaper than sending it to the states

with Kelly getting sick and having to find another restorer at trade rates, I'd say I am a bit over budget but then again the result is probably better than what I initially set out to achieve. I dont like half measures and my team won't do anything but the best so it costs, but like all good things, the quality lingers long after the price is forgotten!

When I first looked at the first photo in your last group of pic's, I thought that the red item on the roof (car cover?) was a big, red bow!

I guess the DeSoto is a present, of sorts.

Can't wait to see it all done in all of its DeSotoliciousness.

Not too much to see this last week. The A/C & heater hoses have been run to the bulk head. the bonnet has been fitted to check carb clearance (no dont ask!). The A/C swith gear is ready to be mounted. the SS corner mouldings required a "Mothers Look" to be found amongst the many parts. As we had no success tracking down the dealer emblem on the boot ( trunk) we decided to make one based roughly on the dirt smudge left after the original was prized off. Most of the zinc plating is back, sorted and has allowed fitting of the window mechanisms etc.

Good to see your gerat rate of progress Bob.The car realy is looking a million bucks!
Looks like your Desoto come from the same neck of the woods as my '57 Belverdere.Mine was delivered to "Dick Poe-Chrysler-Plymouth Inc" of El Paso in January of 1957 and i'm guessing it spent most of it's life in roughly that area,as i found the last registered owner was from Alemeda and the bloke that bought it to Australia picked it up in El Paso.
It's a bit of a treat to find out some of your cars history.
Top work again Bob.

Grant, the history on my car is a bit sketchy. It had a bumper sticker on the rear bar which showed it was owned or driven by a student fom Texas Uni in the sixties. It would be lovely to have as much history as Raffael in Italy has on his fantastic project! cheers

May has been a bit slow as we have been waiting for refurbished parts to arrive back. Almost 1/3 of the bright stainless is still with the polisher holding up progress on the fitment of the windows. The new side glass pieces have been cut, furnace hardened and they look great and fit well. The colour of the glass is a very close match to the original Solex. Both doors have been fitted temporarily so adjustments can be made. Unfortunately the front panels need to come off one more time as we noticed that the front harmonic balancer seal was not properly fitted and is leaking oil. This is annoying as the sump has to come off to remove and refit the parts which means lifting the engine sufficiently to get to the sump. Disappointed that such an obvious thing was overlooked by the US engine builder.
The air cleaners are finished and await bead blasting and gold paint. They now fit snugly under the bonnet with good clearance.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME
I need a good quality rubber/plastic moulding for the RHS top of the bailey channel adjacent to the quarter vent window for my 1957 2D Flite. The moulding which is metal backed is held in place by a rivett. Please PM me if you have something to offer. I believe the part is common to several of the FLs from 1957 to 1959.
thanks
Bob

Hi Rosy its getting close to having all the external panels on for the last time. I'm not sure how long it will take to fix the Hemi but once it's done the guards will go on. The last piece of chrome for the dash arrives tomorrow so then the dash will all come together. I have chosen the leather for the seats and the interior roof lining. Just waiting to hear from the upholsterer for a time slot. I need a small part before we can assemble the RHS door but John Fowlie is working on that for me
so you like Italian donuts hmmm...zeppola di San Giuseppe

Oh...I forgot to mention that Gary Goers might have that part you are looking for; the one you mentioned above - " rubber/plastic moulding for the RHS top of the bailey channel"? I have no idea if he would have something like that, but it might be a place to start looking?

Good luck!

thanks to Gary Goer we now have the rubber mouldings for the top of the quarter windows and a brand new hood lining. Paul Kelly has been busy fabricating the rear parcel shelf and the door cards in fibre glass. These take considerable time as Paul likes to creat a mould to cast the finished product rather than go straight in and make the part in glass... Time consuming but he tells me it is worth the effort. here are some shots of the process.

A very special thanks to ROSY (FIN ME) who has offered her help in the sourcing of hard-to-get parts resulting in their successful acquisition. It tis greatly appreciated.
Thanks also to Gary Goer and Charlotte who are so professional and provide a fast and friendly service and the supply of quality value-for-money after-market FL parts!!!!!!!
Grazie tanto
Bob

Hi Dave, the rear springs were reset lower and an extra leaf added. The front has not yet been beefed up - it's easy to adjust the height by winding up or reducing the tension in the front tortion bars. I'm told that the 300's have a higher rated tension than my Desoto so if it is too soft a ride I will investigate this.
thanks
Bob

Surely Australia's nicest (and most expensive!) De Soto...

Look forward very much to seeing it in the flesh, Bob. And I think Dick Hart would appreciate it too.

Very impressive work - a very good idea to make the door carboard in fibre glass - that will fix the problem forever!

That battery location is pure genius! Be sure to cover it so you don't accidentally short the terminals with something.

work is still progressing but lots of hidden stuff. The mighty Hemi has been fired up without the mufflers (Mmmmm.... hemi stereo!) power steering pump and P/S unit finally plumbed together. The brakes are fitted and bled and the door cards have been shaped and are starting to look the part. The radiator has been dismantled with top and bottom tank being removed. A transmission oil cooler piping was fabricated and fitted into the bottom tank. The top tank was repaired and panel beated and a new overflow pipe fitted. The radiator is now being reassembled ready for painting (photo tomorrow)

Hey Bob, your car is absolutely outstanding!
I was just wondering about your disc upgrade? Where did it come from...Hoppers Stoppers or the Castlemaine Rod Shop? as It will be the first thing im going to do when my 55 NY lands from the US.

Hi Craig, the brake setup came from Hoppers but it is one we got them to modify. If you mention my job to them I'm sure you will get the right one. It is a great setup and easy to install (thanks to our refined design! Ha!)
I have had a few enquiries so I will post some photos of the brake mods. How far away is the '55?

Bob
