The enthusiasm of this guy is a real joy, isn't it?

Cars have obviously got him by the short and curlies and he is fortunate enough that his hard work in other areas enables him to put down the money and effort to bring projects like this to reality. People like Bob certainly inspire others...

G'day guys, can anyone tell me if it is normal for the area around the window winder on the the rear trim card to bulge out about an inch on my 57 flight?????

Also here are a few shots of the dummy fit of the seats and the front seat surrounds in glass

In the parts catalog there seems to be a spring pressing the trim card against the vinder. This will deform the cardboard over time.

Thanks for the reply Ole. I checked out my 58 Sweep and it has a bulge and the conical spring behind the trim. Does anyone know if the Adventurer is the same?

Hi all, sadly John Dawson my good mate and main man on the project was tragically killed in a vintage biplane crash here in Queensland along with his wife and another motor racing mate the pilot, Desi Porter. We will regroup and push on but it is hard to look at the car and not think of him. what a talent he was!!!!

A real tragedy that was unfolding as we hopped on the 'plane for our trip to the US, we didn't hear the outcome prior to reading this thread.

Life must go on - and as the team building the Desoto has told me, John would want it finished!
I have been approached by Paul Kelly whom I had working on the car when the resto began (before he got sick). Well he wanted to come back to help finish the Flite!! He is feeling better and is also a clever guy.
Karl, who had worked closely with John, is excited about working with Paul again in getting the 57 finished (so am I!!). Over the past week, Paul has organized to have the dash pad vacuum-covered by the dashboard restoration people and has installed it in the car. Lined glovebox and lid have also been fitted. Door cards have been tidied up in preparation for the car to be sent to the trimmers.
The vinyl colours have been selected and an embossing tool made to impress the logo on the appropriate spots on the vinyl. We have altered the rear window winder handle with the inclusion of a spacer to allow the trim to remain flat instead of having the spring pushing it out.
There are still some dramas with the windscreen rubbers (er… gaskets) but hopefully Jeff Nichols will supply the correct ones for the job.

John, Mrs. Dawson, and Desi - may you have blue skies and a tailwind, always.

Dawson would be a great name for your car if you don't already have one in mind. Or the Johnny D.

You're doing the work of the gods now. Keep it up. Cheers.

Funny you should mention that. I think Dawson would be a great name infact it already has Dawson on the trunk (original dealer emblem) which I retained as a tribute to both the Dawson boys- John did the panel while Ian did the paint!

Wow. I stand in awe of your craftsmanship. I consider the fact that you took an American LHD model and converted it to RHD the most amazing part of this restoration. Never say die, eh?

This is an amazing renovation overall, but what really impress me is the dash pad and the mild modifications with the AC outlets, that still blends in nicely.
That said, it's also an amazing workload for to sit on the wrong side when driving the car

dont pick on us Aussies- given the choice I prefer to drive on the left (away from the oncoming traffic)

BTW there are many subtle, obvious, mild modifications which no one has yet picked up or at least commented on

Bob, what does the lever-type switch just under the drive selector box control? Just curious.

I like the way you've integrated the modern comforts and features into your red, HOT 'Flite, especially the heating/cooling and sound. And the window glass looks brand new!

BTW..do you have the clock for the center of the steering wheel? I can't recall.

You and your entire Aussie team are giving those very talented Scandinavians a run for their money when it comes to excellent craftsmanship!

Ah! Rosy you're a gal with a good eye for detail The lever is the park brake from a 62 valiant as we replaced the original box (actually it is now in the 58 sweep) with a later V8 torque flite with the park brake in built. It took a bit of work by John to piggy back the two selector boxes together.

The A/C outlets were hand turned on the lathe and have the same profile as the nacelles on the gauges. The radio has been completely rebuilt with circuitry from the USA incorporating the latest AM/FM/MP3 and Ipod/iphone interface coupled to a 600W AMP behind the back seat. All the side glass is brand new solex but the front and rear screen are original and in great condition.
alas the dash clock had to go as it would have looked too cluttered. but we have incorporated a wheel clock as per the 1957 accessories catalogue. the clock was purchased on eBay but the casing and retainer were all made from scratch on the lathe without ever knowing what the original looked like. Both the '57 Flite and '58 sweepboth now sport wheel clocks!!

Hej Bob,
I didn't know, that on DeSoto's are these clockwheels available, too. That's a really true treasure on your fantastic RHD-Flite

Just curious, is the clock supposed to be mounted with 1.00 as top high instead as 12.00, or am I missing something here?

Oh you really are a wiz! I just quickly assembled the sections to show how it is. when it finally comes together the steering wheel will be in the straight ahead position and the clock will sit with the 12 o'clock high. Good to see you are paying attention!

G'day ToM, there are plenty of clocks still avaible on ebay as they were used on other vehicles including VW. however they are harder to find with the fittings to retain them in the wheel- we made our own!
cheers

Thanks' man, compliments on the nice work with the retainer. Those clocks are rare and expencive at that - a very nice option to have though.
You mean that the clockwork was used on other cars as well? With exactly the same face?

Another note of left and right -The parking brake handle looks as it was meant for left hand drive cars, do anyone knows if Ma Mopar actually made a handle specially for right hand cars??

It's been bugging me all day that I couldn’t find this photo of the A/C nacelles we turned up on the lathe. FINALLY tonight after trawling through 100s of shots I found it. It turned out to be NOT that interesting but here it is anyway!!!

In my book this is great - I can see that you have copied the same looks as the instrument gauge bezel has. That makes the nacelles fit more nicely on the dashboard and for anyone but a DeS freak, they might have been there since back then.

Just for interest sake - some makes (and names) of steering wheel clocks:

MAAR (Swiss made, I think found on Olds, other GM's)
VDM
Rometsch (VW, Ghias)
Benrus
DeSotomatic
Moparmatic
Centromatic
I'm sure there's others out there

Great work, Bob - I've heard from other folks that they own the clock, but do not have the ring that connects it to the steering wheel. You did a great job of creating that ring and installing your clock!

Going to be quite possibly the NICEST FL Down Under.
Excellent work, great attention to detail.
Can't wait until it's done and you send us a bunch of photos from your maiden voyage.
Super cool, super cool, super cool.

You know, guys and gals, this is a very special place in the world to be, here in the forward look family. I just received a PM from Paul "springsweptwing" who withdrew his bid on the bumperettes as he didnt need his straight away. As a result the bid has dropped by some $400.00 I am very humbly blown away by such a wonderful jesture. I may still be outbid, but who cares, thanks Paul!!!!
