Expert Posts: 2788 Location: USA - KY | I forgot to mention, Bob, that I'm jealous that your pink Firesweep came with the dual rear antenna, and the "Deluxe" roof trim pieces already in place. I've found the antennae (a miracle), but I still want the roof trim. This is such an interesting (and amazing) thread! Keep on a-postin'!

Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | Thanks Rosy, I guess I was lucky with those (and didn't know it)!! I also noticed, while I was theiving the boot lock striker plate from the pink car, that there is a metal box behind the back seat and just visible from the boot, with what looks like radio valves and wiring to it. Does anyone know its function? Is it a collector for the aerials or some sort of booster amphlifier for the radio?? There are no speakers in the back. Bob

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13049 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | I think that it is a reverb - the grayish two cables goes to a speaker, or the remains of one, or hangs in the air close to a speaker position?

Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | Hi, I have another question. I bought this speedometer/odometer unit on eBay and fitted it today to my refurbished dash binnacle. However i noticed the odometer numbers are red while the one Ireplaced had white letters. What car is this unit for????? Expert Posts: 1488 Location: New Castle PA | 1957 DeSotos are correct with either the red or the white numbers. I have many pictures of both. I don't know if both versions came from the factory, or if a replacement unit had the red. either way, I'd use it. Your restoration is TRULY an inspiration! Fantastic work. I'd vote for you for president, or maybe Raffaele in Italy (restoring the Adventurer convertible from a pile of junk)!

Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | Thanks Ed, very flattering but Raffaele is my hero as he's doing all the work himself!! My job in the project is to feed the "black hole"!!! and organize! Regarding the red numbers, I decided to put the odometer/speedo in anyway as the white numbers were flaked and faded. And as you can see they don't look at all out of place with all that RED!!! Bob (57 dash red numbers.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 57 dash red numbers.jpg (64KB - 316 downloads)

Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | I was going to ask you guys that!!!!!!! We have been kicking this around all week!! But seriously, the alternator is second easiest. I also have a power steering pump to fit (easiest) and then there's the A/C compressor! I will be mounting the alternator in the bottom right corner as you face the motor from the front. The water pump pulley and the double V belt drive on the harmonic balancer, as supplied by the engine builder, are too close to the front face of the motor to be useful!!! On my engine it all hinges on the water pump pulley, so we are going to find a std. shallow pressed steel Chevy pulley from the wreckers which is only about 1" deep instead of mine which is about 3" fron the front of the pump boss to the v drive. There will then be plenty of space for the alternator. Then I'll turn up a spacer to line up the 2 belt drive off the balancer. Once the brackets are fabricated and the Alt. lined up, I'll buy an aftermarket WP pulley and turn up a new double pulley. I have bought three "low mount" brackets from 'HOT HEADS' for each of the bolt-ons but these are also too close to the body. However, before I send two of them back I will make a pattern so we can fabricate our own. The power steer bracket looks like it will work. The A/C compressor will have to be located in the valley made by the rocker cover and the front carby and with the extra clearance produced by the modified pulleys should mount there without too much drama. Iam going to stick the radiator in temporarily to make sure there is still room with the mods. I will keep you abreast of our progress. It will be soon though, as it is holding up assembly of the inner guards and guards on the car as we want to avoid scratching paint. BTW all suggestions welcome. Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | Oops! Now you tell me!!! It's not that I don't care or that I'm lazy. and it's not too late to repaint the inner guards. It was certainly debated with the Dawson boys at length and my preference was infact, iridescent dark grey as on the steering column and dash gauges! However, there are many things on this car that we didnt know (being downunder in the deep, deep south) or that are personal preferences (if you look close)! So I do appreciate you're pointing it out, Brent and I've taken it on board. They might yet end up grey or P&A Black (what ever that is)! Thanks Bob

Expert Posts: 1730 Location: Michigan | Bob, I have looked at those brackets on HH. However, I have noticed that once you head down this path, the GM adaptions become a slippery slope. EG. Use the timing plate adaptor and GM Water pump and then you need GM Pulleys and a new radiator becuase the hose positions get swapped! Use the HH intake and you need to fabricate a mount off the intake to support the stock generator. Dump the generator and you need to get a GM alternator and power steering pump. Change those and then you have to convert from 6V to 12V!!! All small potatoes for you I'm sure considering the work I saw on the dash to convert the car to right hand drive. But a bit more than I wanted to do to my car. I wanted to swap the engine and keep it close to original. I didn't want to completely re-engineer it.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | Thanks Mark, I know what you're saying, sorry I couldnt be of help. I still have the original generator so I'll see what I can come up with trying to attach it to the 392 and make it look stock. BTW I suppose I did get a bit carried away with the dash but I wanted it to look factory original but "in the looking glass". I love this car, I love its outragous, imposing size, its Exner aerodynamic fins, its drag race bred Hemi, its sleek ageless classic lines, its Chrysler heritage and now its Brand New yet brazen appearance!!!!!! Ah! I feel good

Elite Veteran Posts: 1120 Location: Brisbane, Australia | G'day Mark, I have not had chance yet to look at your generator fitment, however I spent a couple of hours on the weekend setting up the boltons for my 392. I am fairly pleased with the positions which will require only simple brackets which Karl and I will fabricate in mild steel this week. Then we'll get them water cut in AN grade alloy. The power steer pump is represented in cardboard but I have included a pic of the compact pump/resevoir I have ordered from 'Summit Racing'. Expert Posts: 1730 Location: Michigan | Considered what radiator your going to use? The hoses changed position with that GM pump. The catalog shows options from 200 - 700 US without much description as to what your getting for your money. Interesting how the 'vintage look' are some of the most expensive cores... I think this weekend I may start dismantling the 55 so I can begin working on the engine compartment. These photos are very motivating.. even if it is 25 degrees F outside.

It is owned by an engineer, Ian who has had the car since 1997. It may upset a few purists as it is to have some mods including an under bonnet 671 huffer for his Hemi and acording to Ian, will be a blue and white version of my 'Flite. Can't wait to see it happen? Also hard to believe, his business partner David has a 57 Firedome RHD as his daily driver!!
