Well, last weekend John Quinn and Rick Clapham arrived with the Coronet convertible stowed in John's amazing 26' enclosed trailer. I wish I would have taken some pictures of the trailer - we were so busy unloading the convertible that I neglected my duties! After we unloaded the convertible into the garage, Patrick Van De Weghe arrived and we all went out to lunch.

After lunch, I thanked everyone and lifted the convertible onto wheel dollies so I could move the car side-to-side in the garage. The Gammel Dodge is right next to it, so I can start placing trim on both cars simultaneously. I took these pictures today. A beautiful spring day in the Mile High City!

Just spectacular! That color combo is a real knockout, and so unique... and an owner that appreciates all of them as they deserve.

It was tough to give Mike back his convertible but it belongs here and not in my car trailer. It was a good day moving this car and talking Forward Look stuff at a 50's diner with all.

Thanks Mike!

I hope this car will prove to be inspiration for others to preserve seldom seen colors
on our cars. This beast will be stunning when all bolted back together.

Looking Great Mike,
Cannnot wait to see the Convertible built up. I forgot you still had the Gammel, Are these the only 3 you have now ??. Are you keeping all 3 or does any have to go and where you keeping the Desoto now the garage is full..

Thanks everyone. I am really excited to start assembly on the convertible. I may have some more pictures to post this week! I enjoy updating the threads too - it is fun to see the progress over time.

Clive, one of the three has to go! I suspect that I will sell the Gammel Dodge once it is finished. The three cars I have remaining are each very special. The convertible has the shallowest history. I know that it was sold new at a dealership in New York state. From there and then to Colorado in the 1980's is a mystery.

I had the Body Shop re-create the "TJ" on the doors. I have no idea what that means, but it is part of the history of this particular car. It would be fun if one day, someone recognizes it and fills in some of the gaps.

I had the choice of going back to "year one" with the restoration, but I abandoned that idea by changing the two-tone scheme and adding the spring trim. I think it is also legitimate to acknowledge the human history of a car. After all, a car is inanimate. Several people used and enjoyed this car for decades. Like the "Frostbite", the human use of a car sometimes becomes more important than ultimate correctness (or someone could at least look at it that way).

Last weekend I worked on the grille for the convertible. I remember how agonizing restoration of the Gammel Dodge's grille was, and the convertible grille was equally difficult, if not worse. After pulverizing nine 0000 steel wool pads, I have a presentable grille.

Tonight my task was to open a huge, heavy PVC tube that came with the convertible to see what parts it contained. I opened it up to discover a cache of carefully wrapped stainless pieces - all damp with moisture! The news paper wrappings were from the Fresno Bee and were generally dated around September 1987! That time frame does not make much sense since I saw this car in a junkyard that year and again in approximately 1994.

Hi, Clive - I have no ideal what that "TJ" looking thing means. It was on the car since the first time I saw it, so I kept it.

There is a J Lazy T Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona. I'll have to give them a call and see if their brand matches or if anyone remembers the car...

That's very cool that you're sensitive to the car's actual history and you'll preserve the TJ of a former owner, when I first saw it I figured it was a cattle/ranch brand of some sort.

Interesting that the '58 Dodge grill looks like a much higher quality piece than that of my '58 Chrysler (just got it Tues and I posted a few pics under "Winne comes home to NY" under Member's Rides today). The Chrysler one is a flat and kinda cheap piece stamped out of thin aluminum sheet, while the '58 Ddge grille looks to be an assemblage of aluminum extrusions, a far more expensive way to make a grill. Dad's 67 Fury III had a grill made that way and it gave a real quality look to the front of the car. Maybe Chrysler put all their money into those big 2 piece bumpers!

Thanks, Roger - it is important to me that a previous owner could recognize the car, if they ever see it again. The way this one was heading, it would be all painted red and there would be no chance at all. Your Chrysler is outstanding! I am glad you talked about the grille. I had the impression that the two grilles were very similarly constructed. Yes, the Dodge grille is about 18 pieces of extruded aluminum fitted together with a few spot welds and mostly insert-and-bend tabs. I really did not enjoy cleaning that thing!

No the '58 Wndsor grill is a really chintzy looking flat thin stamping... and I know the NYer was the same, I had a '58 vert 25 yrs ago, and the old guy who lived in the house right behind us back in Baltimore in 1958 had a brand new black NYer sedan.... and the same cheapo grill. A NYer was one expensive car - hard to figure what they were thinking! Luckily it doesn't seem to detract from the car overall, and the massive double bumper does give it a good look.

We need an update on your Plymouth, Ray! Not quite sure on the timeline for this one...there is a lot to accomplish. I am going to install all the trim now. I worked on it all weekend and will continue this week. I installed all the eyebrow trim, the grille, and the front stone guard - there are still a few little bolts that are giving me some trouble, but I will flush those out this week and (with any luck) have the front bumpers installed.

You're around Cherry Creek, if memory serves? some of the garages were on back alleys in the area iirc, somewhat rare around here. Can't wait to see pics with all the "jewelry" on her!

What is the white Dodge in the little Avatar pic?

Hi, Roger -

That one is the first car I ever owned. It is a '58 Royal Lancer sedan gold and eggshell. I bought it in 1986 and owned it for about 25 years. When I bought the Firedome convertible, I sold it and a bunch of other cars. It went to Sweden and I haven't heard anything of it since...

Here is some recent progress on the front end.

The casual observer may now skip the remaining portion of this post.

For my own notes, these bits of trim and front bumpers were very frustrating to install. First, the stainless trim I extracted from the tube needed a lot of attention prior to installation. If I could send that back to the person who worked on it I would and tell them start over again. The inside of many of the pieces was dirty and there was some red paint still remaining on the inside edges. The moisture made it necessary to go over the exterior surfaces with fine steel wool. Worst of all, the bolt threads were all dirty or coated with gunk, which made the simple act of threading a nut to secure the trim a hassle.

The front bumpers were no easy task. I drilled the bumpers to install the optional spuds. Unfortunately, I drilled one too many holes in one of the bumpers! Luckily, a neighbor is an expert welder and repaired the damage. The grille was difficult to install and I took many attempts with different lower bolts to finally get the right ones. Even the exact same bolts from the Gammel Dodge would not go! All-in-all, it felt like something that took five minutes to install at the factory required hours on end for me! Ok, there's my rant. That feels better.

On the brighter side, the Dodge block letters and the stone guard were simple, easy installations!

The bumper tie bar is at Denver Bumper Works getting replated. Although not many of my parts placed on the car so far are show quality, none of my tie bars were up to snuff. I lowered the Coronet grille emblem one notch from its original height - I think it will look better when the tie bar is on.

Looking good is right! I should have never given you the car back after storing it.

Keep the pics coming,

Also Mike I found the 59 SF interior quarter window (pocket) panels that you inquired about. If you can use them, they are yours for one Diet Pepsi!

What a beauty - I hope to see it in person in Denver one of these days! I can't get over what a great color combo that is, one of the best I've seen on any FL.
Daughter is going to Thailand/Cambodia in June/July, so we won't be visiting Denver this year for the first time in 6 years, but we will for sure next year.

I finished the stainless trim surrounding the windshield, and I was ready to work on the back end for a while. I took these images today as references to a starting point. I removed the rear bumper and disassembled it. I painted the inside surface with primer and black paint to protect it against corrosion. There was quite a bit less preparation work necessary on the rear bumper than the front bumpers.

Tell us about "sierra script" on front fender please! Do you call the car Sierra? or what?

Hi, Morgan:

I wondered when someone was going to ask about that! When I converted my car into a Spring Special, I had to drill script holes in the front fenders. The hole pattern is exactly the same for the 1958 Dodge "Sierra", "Royal", and "Coronet" scripts. I happened to have all three of those and a set of "Custom Royal" scripts too. I wasn't going to use the Custom Royal scripts because they have a completely different hole pattern. Once you drill for the Custom Royal script, it is practically irreversible.

I chose to put on the Sierra scripts because the name fits well with where I live, at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. It is also the call sign for the first letter of my last name. If the next owner wants to change it back to a Coronet, no problem! For now, I am going with it - a personal touch, the privilege of ownership.

There a couple of scripts I do not own - "Suburban" and the "Custom" script from the Texans. I would love to get sets of those to see if they have the same hole pattern as the Coronet.

I can already tell that the back end is going to go a lot faster than the front end did! I dissassembled the rear bumper and painted the insides black. I buffed out all the parts with 0000 steel wool and put it all back together. I added the optional rear bumper guards and a set of exhaust deflectors and presto!

I did not attach the Custom Royal stainless piece above the bumper yet. I need to find someone to straighten that out a bit! It is just a little too rough to go on the convertible just yet...but that's a nice place to store it in the meantime.

I think your "thinking" about the script on fender is very neat. As i understand this car is a "keeper"! a small personal changes is totally ok with me! It will be a headturner, can´t wait for more pic´s! Hope you find out more about the history of the car. Morgan

Thanks, Morgan and Matt - Matt, I should be ready to measure those fins very soon!
I will be very surprised if there is any difference between the fins of the convertible and the hardtop!

If anyone ever asked what is my favorite feature of the '58 Dodge, it would without doubt be the crenelated tail light bezels! Sixteen delightful crenels in each bezel! Sixteen merlons in each bezel! Sixty-four crenels in all! Sixty-four merlons! All needed a good polishing before they can be installed

So the fin-end caps and everything to do with the fin ends was a big problem. The way those studs lay out, they can jam and get very stubborn. I put the first scratches in the new paint work installing those bad boys. The Spring Special fin end caps are a pain to install. I put the second set of scratches in during that process

Same here. I put some small scratches in my paint putting the fin-caps on. Even worse, I titghten them down a little too much and wasn't watching what was happening. It crushed the pain between the caps and the fin. Hard to explain without a photo, but it's ugly.

Hi, Tom:

I guess misery loves company, so thanks for telling me that! Honestly, those dang caps are terrible to install. I am sharing drilling templates for a bunch of these trim items in a different thread, but I was totally unsatisfied with the holes I drilled for those caps, so I can't share those templates. Plus, you have to drill at wierd angles under the fin! Horrible! I don't know how the factory and dealers delt with those dang things.
