I have now tried to fit the Pertronix Electronic Ignition "Ignitor Chrysler 8 cyl" 1381A - this DOES ABSOLUTELY NOT FIT, not without scrapping your vacuum advance and rebuild your breaker plate and the pertronix plate as well.

I have been told that 1381A might fit double breaker distributors and/or the '61 and up aluminum distributors (could someone confirm this?) (if so, I should be interested to buy an aluminum distributor)

Sorry - our road is not always the flattop - but many times the winding gravel road

And here is pictures of the reason the Pertronix does not fit - the countersunk screw in the Pertronix bracket will be approximately in the same position as the stud and the vacuum advance movements will be binding due to the widht of the bracket.

NOT poking at you, but I am really curious why anyone would use something like Pertronix when MotherMopar has had the electronic ignition available for the last 40 years...?
Any thoughts out there?

That's interesting. Would the "guts" of an aluminum Chrysler electronic ignition distributor, be able to be swapped into a cast iron unit?

I put the Pertronix in both my 69 D100 LA318 and my 65 Chry 413. I don't have the packaging or the receipts anymore but both fit right into the dist without any problems, and have been running trouble free. But they do have to be wired correctly. I also used the 'flamethrower' coil on the 413, and opened up the plug gap another .005. I couldn't find any specific info on the plug gap, only that a wider gap was suggested. Jerry

Going back to Gary's question about why someone would use a Pertronix E.I. system, instead of MaMope's one(s):
the Pertronix systems fit under the distributor cap, so that they are hidden from view.

As far as Sven's question is concerned, I only am familiar with the 53-58 Hemi/Poly engines, which can use Pertronix's
1383 unit (if the dissie has a dual points breaker plate in it).

Sven,

According to the Pertronix catalog ( http://www.pertronix.com/catalogs/pdf/ptx/2010/ptx2010_ignition_con... ), the 1381A fits '62-'75 Chrysler engines with single point distributors.
You have a '60 Chrysler, right ? ... You need the 1382, it fits the '59-'71 Chrysler engines with dual point distributors.

Thanks guys, the Mopar "kit" has the control box, while (just as Neil writes) the Pertronix can be "hidden away".
@ Vincent, I have the singel breaker dissy - hence it seems like I have no other options but go for a '61 ('62?) > aluminum dissy (Yes, I hear that they should fit)

The 1381A Pertronix kit will only fit the Distributors from 62 and up, part number 303817. You can get this distributor from any
car parts store for $40 or less. This is what im using in my 59 Dodge. So buy the Dist, and the kit, you keep the coil and the stock cap.
Works great.

@Sven, I have the same problem, but I bought a dual point breaker plate.
I will convert my single point distributor into a dual one, so that I can adapt the Pertronix kit.

I wanted an electronic Pertronix unit to mount in my '59 Dodge 326 with single point autolite dizzy so I contacted Pertronix to see if they did a conversion for the single point dizzy's, here's the reply from Carl Alcocer Technical Support Pertronix inc

Cut and pasted from my email,

Currently we don't offer a kit for you application and I think We will make
one in the future.

Not sure how long "in the future" will be ??

I've explained my own conversion of a single point dissie to Pertronix ignition here : http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=42045

When I asked Pertronix the question many years ago they offered to build one that would fit the cast iron distributor. They wanted over two hundred dollars. I found a rebuilt aluminum distributer for less than $40 and the combination has worked perfectly.

Hmmmmmmm............ $200 as opposed to $40, yes, I can see why you chose the latter.....

I'll have to try and find a dual point distributor or breaker plate or just use the later LA distributor. Not original I guess but from what I've managed to read, the LA engine distributors are a bolt in as-is replacement ??
