Location: Northern New Jersey | I know its not a Forwardlook Question; Which Marque was the first with bucket seats? I think the Chrysler swivel seat appeared in 1958, though not a real bucket. I remember seeing a 300-E with buckets, but I don't know if it was correct.
Any Ideas? |

Location: Kansas City | In 1957, the very first '57 Chrysler 300-C was a convertible with bucket seats up front. However, that was a one and only deal. I also know that both Pontiac and Oldsmobile produced cars in '58 with bucket seats. Well known car collector Tom Gerrard owns an example of each one if memory serves me correctly. They are of course rare as can be, but factory produced. Then again, it all depends on how you look at it. I believe Model A Fords technically had bucket seats up front too. That is a real good question FIN NV. |

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | A bit on trivia, FYI, in 1960 the Chrysler 300-F bucket seats were both sitting on the same frame underneath. They were not individually controlled, when you moved the driver's seat the passenger seat moved as well. The mechanism was concealed underneath the carpeted section of the center console. The frame under the seats was exactly the same frame as used on the regular swivel seats with center armrest.
I belive the Pontiac Bonneville was first in 58 with buckets. I`ve never seen a 58 Olds with buckets but maybe some did. Did olds build a Starfire in1958 |

| My '33 Chrysler had bucket seats that were independently adjustable and tilted forward to give access to the back seat. I'm sure there were others built earlier.

Location: Parts Unknown | I once looked at a Packard Twin-Six, technically not a model year car, but a factory-numbered
"series" car. It was sold new in 1923. It had low back bucket seat up front.
This leads me to think of those real early "horseless carriage" type cars with the tuck and roll
leather buckets. I think bucket seats go back to the very beginning, it you allow some latitude in
defining what is a "bucket seat".
BTW - All GM makes were available with the hard shell backed bucket seats from 58 thru 60.
I owned a couple Buicks with them. |

Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | When the question was asked I was specifically thinking of full sized cars, but canman is right in saying the early Corvettes at least had full buckets.
My ex-1962 Chrysler 300-Sport had the optional leather interior with fully contoured front bucket seats and a center folding armrest section. The seat was in three sections just like the swivel seats from 59-61 but without the swivels. Chrysler advertised this specific interior in the sales brochure as "fully contoured bucket seats" but like the 300-F and G they were all connected on one seat frame and all 3 sections moved together. I once had a long discussion with a lawyer who argued up and down (take note: never argue with a lawyer!) that mine in the 62 were not true buckets because they were all on the same seat frame. At that time he said Chrysler's first full true buckets were on the 300-F without realizing that it was exactly the same setup, the seats were both on one frame but without the folding armrest in between, but the console on the F and G hid the moving seat frame underneath.

In my little universe a bucket seat is a seat which is recessed in the middle (seat and back) to provide side-support for cornering.
As such, I don't feel that for instance 66/67 Charger-seats are 'bucket seats', but just individual seats.

Location: Parts Unknown | Several times, while restoring a car, the interior has been removed to the upholstery shop and
in the interim, the car had to be moved. Nothing quite as quick and easy as an upturned 5 gallon
bucket to sit on while driving it when the interior is gutted.
All other "bucket" seats pale in comparison.

A true "bucket seat" has bolsters on the sides of the main cushion/backrest. An "individual seat" is a single seat that can be operated independently of its neighbor but has flat cushions and backrest. |
