Extreme Veteran Posts: 417 Location: Bräcke,Sweden | This is from my 62 Chrysler/Imperial service manual. Don´t know if it is the same as in 1961. I have been given a couple of photos of the rear doors and I think that I can figure out where to make the holes for the rear door actuators. Would be really thankful for any pic's or info though (I have the '60-'61 manuals)

Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | Your posts on the power door locks and the power windows have been very helpful. I have a '60 New Yorker Town & Country that has power locks and the right front vacuum harness was cut off in the door jam. I don't have the car running so I can't test the locks. Maybe I should use a vacuum pump to power it up. A friend has a '60 New Yorker 4-door sedan parts car and I'm getting all the power lock parts out of it. Boy, that vacuum hose routing is a real bear. I've only gotten the right side stuff out so far as there is another parts car blocking the driver side doors. I did notice a single vacuum hose going down the right side of the floor but not sure where it was going. I'll have to go back and finish the removal and see what that was for.

I can't figure out why they decided to do a vacuum system in 1960 for all models but the Imperial, when Imperial had a perfectly good electric door lock system since 1958 that was simpler than the vacuum system.

They call it an automatic system like it's going to lock the doors as soon as you start the engine. And then the Plymouth one says it has sensors in the front seat so that it knows that the driver has gone out of the car and doesn't allow the doors to lock to keep the kids from locking you out. And then of course on the 3-seat wagons it says that when the doors are locked the third seat tailgate window switch is disabled. I know Wizard explained how they function in my thread about them - http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=76195 I don't know about the vacuum system being cheaper with the quality of the components they used in it. The brass Ts for the vacuum hoses are real quality. It's like the windshield washers, a lot of bits to make it all work. Of course that they dropped it after one year.
