Time to vote for your favourite colour for the '57 DeSoto Fireweep from the colour chips below...

...and what roof and sweep colours do you think would go best with your fav?

I've never been able to choose.

Tonight it feels like gold with frosty white roof and sweep.
Or maybe the opposite.....:)

Rosy and I talk about this often. I'm partial to my car's scheme. Although it can be hard to keep black looking clean.

I like Lagoon Blue with a Mist Green sweep and roof for a cool color combination
I like Fiesta Red with a Frosty White sweep and roof for a warm color combination

But then again, a '57 De Soto looks great in any of the combinations - it is just the way the car is.

Hot Pink would be a fun color.

Since I am very fond of black (black is beautyful) on big cars, my first choise is black body and roof with gold sweep. But since my 3rd car, as a 19 years old in 1966 in California was a DeSoto Golden Adventurer (like the one shown here and elsewhere on this site), I sure wouldn't mind one with the same color, gold body with white roof and sweep. But I'll agree with other(s) on here, the 1957 DS would look good in just about any colour.

I've never seen a '57 in a colour scheme that I didn't like!

I was lucky enough to obtain an original '57 DeSoto dealer's paint and fabric book that has large format paint chips, and I spend way too much time playing with them and trying to decide which combinations I like the best.

I tried to match the colours in the "chips" that I've posted above to the original chips that I have, using a cheap version of "photo shop". I think that they are pretty close, of course depending on the differences among computer screens and such. The Fiesta Red is much more "red" in really life. The Samoa Green is a little more "blue" in real life, at least according to my original paint chips.

Just when I think I've decided on a favourite, I change my mind AGAIN.

Thanks for your imput guys! Keep it coming!

I like the darker colors. That slate grey and orange or black and red make the car really look impressive. But I always like to have the color schemes that 'get noticed'. Explains why I have so many tickets I suppose...

I can't vote for a single color, as the entire basis of the 57 DeSoto getting top honors for design is
that best-of-the-best color sweep design, ... and thus, a TWO color option is mandatory for any vote.

I like the seldom seen colors and combos, particularly the very period-unique pastels. Just say "no"
to typical.

I had thought about doing so, but I'd need a 210 choice option list!

And in the words of Sweet Brown, "Ain't nobody got time for that!".

I too like the 50s pastels, and in general except for limos and formal sedans light colors look best on big cars imo... factory choices were limited, should have had Salmon, Lavender, Pink and some other real classic '50s colors... they would look so amazing on this body design. Also imo some of the other '57-9 makes had even better color choices, and when I do mine it may not be restricted to only factory colors for 1958.

Hey, that 2-tone gray DeSoto that J T Vincent posted is parked in my driveway! Oops! It's my car!!! LOL!

One side note to the gray/orange car. It's a BEAUT, but the upholstery is installed 90-degrees off of where it ought to be -- the pattern runs the wrong way!

I'd like to see a photoshop (if someone can do it) of a Leaf Green main body and a White sweep with a Black roof. And vise versa on the black and white, on a 2 door hardtop body.

BTW, Greg C. - There are several "tri-tone" paint schemes that I think would really suit the '57 DeSoto.

I contacted the Chrysler Historical folks to see if a "tri-tone" '57 DeSoto was ever made, and they told me that they had no records of any leaving the factory with a "tri-tone" paint scheme in place. My '57 fabric/paint book describes the roof and the sweep as always being painted the same colour.

But I still think that some "tri-tone" paint schemes would look cool.

Thanks Rosy! That green roof just doens't look right. The wagon shows potential but I'm thinking 2 colors is plenty. Guess the factory thought the same thing.

My next choice would be the Dusty orange main body and Slate gray roof and sweep. The reverse of the one shown above.

As I understand it, tri-tones were offered in 1956 only.

Not sure why I think tri-tones seem inappropriate on post 56-cars other than it wasn't done,
but the 56 cars do seems to wear the three colors more naturally - probably just that this is
how they were done back in the day.

In '56 DeSoto also had black/aqua/white tri-tones available in a number of different combinations of roof/body/side sweep, the Coronado featured it, and tri-tones may have been available on regular models as well.

In '58 Olds offered an amazing pale purple non-metallic color called "Heather" that would look absolutely incredible on a 57-58 FL car...one of the potential candidates for my '58. You can see it for yourself on: http://www.autocolorlibrary.com It's a great resource for color research.

In '56 Lincoln had a similar color called "Wisteria". A '56 Premiere convertible in Wisteria with white top and white leather interior was at the top of my "want" list for years, along with a '58 Adventurer convert. IMO the '56 Premiere was the ultimate expression of '50s understated "Class", while the '58 DeS was the apotheosis of '50s "Way Out Wild".

Thanks for the paint chip link. It was pouring rain all day and our insurgent friends are not
prone to going out in inclement weather. A good time to indulge in some paint study.

Wisteria is "up there" as the final word in great pink-purple pastel colors on a 50's car. I think
it might look real good on a 58 DeSoto ! The key to pulling off a loud color like that is to downplay
the other flashy aspects of the car. It is too close to "the edge" to push it, as the car easily becomes
over-the-top and just plain obnoxious. Yeah, I know ... a lot of 50's fans don't believe such a
concept exists !

I will be spending more time when I come home dialing in paints and all that has changed since
I last in the booth. Back in the day I only shot acrylic and nitrocellulose lacquer ! ... tells you how
out of touch I am !

Looking at the Google images of 56 Lincolns - and I agree, the 56 was a top shelf design for 50's
elegance - I really like the car in turquoise, yellow, and that Wisteria color.

I was reminded that the 56 Linc beat the 57 DeSoto to that outrageously awesome forward thrusting
side trim design. I will always be a fan of the 58 Linc for that enormous battle cruiser car it was, but the
56 is a stunning design as well. My only critical objection is the nose is a little "busy" for an otherwise
sedate and elegant car. Love the door handle escutcheons !!!

You're just too modest to admit that you're modest...

Sorry I forgot to tip my hat to you Ed. Always loved that color scheme. My car was originally Lagoon Blue and Frosty white. It looks more menacing in black and blue. On a slightly different note, I have to admit I like the Firesweeps a lot. The Dodge fenders somehow fit the bumper better than on the senior cars, but I would like the Hemi and therefore it's a draw. Speaking of seniors-- Senescence Gray. Nice one Neil.

Several of you sound like a Chevy owner trying to talk about Mopars. In regards to tri-tone vehicles, Simon is correct, Dodge was certainly not the only FL vehicle to have a tri-tone paint scheme. While Dodge did have tri-tone color combinations, other FL vehicles did have tri-tone paint schemes as well. The Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis, as stated previously, also had tri-tone paint standard. My uncle has one and they not only were tri-tone, but there were multiple color combinations available. Other Chryslers did not have tri-tone paint schemes available. Furthermore, there were NO 1956 De Sotos produced with a factory tri-tone paint combination. The only FL De Soto to have tri-tone paint was the 1955 Fireflite Coronado Sedan, which came in a possible six color combinations of aqua, white, and black. 1956 and beyond did not have any Coronado model or tri-tone paint schemes for De Soto. FL Imperials never had tri-tones and I believe (but certainly won't swear to it) that Plymouth never had a tri-tone paint scheme in the FL years.

My '58 Firedome was the mist green with a darker green sweep & roof, and that was pretty cool- but I was more interested in the Hemi.
But my all-time favorite paint was the 'saddle shoe'- frosty white with a muscatel-though I remember it being a little more towards brown- sweep & roof that was running around campus then ('69 or '70).
As others have said, though- there's no paint that could make a '57-'58 DeSoto look bad.

Muscatel is quite brown in appearance .... at least after it has weathered a bit. Maybe it was
more red when new ?

Here is a car that I know is Frosty White and Muscatel Maroon - the Schwartz family sold it after this pic was taken to a super nice fellow who treasures it. Beautiful '58 Firesweep!

I cut that ad of the yellow & white '57 out of my parent's Nat Geo when I was around 12 in '61 and still have, alnog with the cowboy ad they had, forget the copy... is it possible for a 57/ Des to look bad in ANY color combo? I'm not sure that is possible!

I knew, Brent, that's you would appreciate the beautiful '56 Linc in Wisteria, as our taste is very similar, however we've disagreed for years on the front end design of the Dodge/Sweep vs Dome/Flite's headlight & fender-grille integration. But in reality it's kind of like deciding between filet mignon and prime rib, oui? ... frankly, how can one go wrong? I have a hard time convincing some of my Euro-car loving friends, at times, but in terms of sheer artistic beauty FL cars can more than hold their own with an Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale or anything else Continental, and the number of "our" cars presently in Europe confirms the growing worldwide appreciation of the brilliance of the Exner team's creations. Deciding on the proper color scheme for a '57 DeSoto is surely an exercise in gilding the lily, and, really, one is hard pressed to come up with a bad one!

I am kicking around in my vacuous head if that Wisteria might just be too much of a good thing
on a car like the 57 DeSoto. I suspect it is. The not-quite-so-flamboyant body of a 56 Lincoln
carries it well. The DeSoto is so much less "formal" and the Wisteria paint would just be over-the-
top to a point of being kitschy. That color would carry well on an Imperial though.
