Yes it is, 1956 Desoto Diplomat.
Wonder were it was sold originally? Mexico? Hawaii?

That is the best looking '56 Plymouth I have ever seen. Take that to an NDC club event and watch the confusion ensue.

I brought my 1956 Desoto Diplomat UTE to the convention in Detroit, yes indeed it does cause a lot of confusion.
Would like to have this car, my car and a standard American production car together for a photo shoot. 3 completely different body styles, all 1956 Desoto.

My Desoto is also a Diplomat just like the other one, but mine is Australian only production. On top of that, it is a car/truck hybrid like a ElCamino or Ranchero so it is really different. The car on Craigslist was probably built in Detroit!

How did you manage to get a UTE?

How did you manage to get a UTE?

After selling my 57 Adventurers (coupe and ragtop) I wanted another Desoto but something unusual and I found it in Australia.

I found (over the internet) a guy in Townsville Queensland Australia selling the Desoto and also a Plymouth UTE of the same year. I made the deal and paid a hefty sum in shipping and waited for them to get here. I have since sold the Plymouth after driving and enjoying it for a while. The Desoto waits in the garage for it's turn as I collect the parts I need to restore it. Many of the parts are 54 Plymouth so they are easy to find but some of them have to be purchased from Australia or the UK The brake components are made by Girling and the Electrical is Lucas. Luckily the export specific 9 tooth grille is in great shape as it would be very expensive to replace. The custom guys drool over it! The frame is from a convertible for off road rigidity and it is running 16" wheels for ground clearance. Unlike my Adventurers that had lots of options the UTE has one, tinted glass. No power goodies, heater, radio or clock. It doesn't even have turn signals but I will add them since I found while driving the Plymouth UTE that it is hard to shift with your left hand while doing hand signals with your right while taking a corner.

The engines are flat head sixes with three on the tree. It has a hydraulic clutch and 12V positive ground electrical system.

Interesting... So they used 54 bodies for the 56 model year? That DeSoto UTE looks like its ready to bite someone with that grille!

Yep, they picked up the production dies and some presses after the 54 model year from another assembly plant and started stamping their own bodies starting in 1955. The 54 Plymouth body shell stayed in production in Australia until the early 60s. The Chrysler AP1, AP2 and AP3 series (AP stands for Australian production) even used the 54 body shel with different quarters and front fenders. Here is a 56 ad to show that they are indeed 56. Somewhere I have a copy of the correspondence from the factory to the dealers announcing the new UTE that was coming out in 56.

It was the market that the Australians knew and unless they were getting American magazines probably all they knew? from 1954-56 there was very little change.
Below are production totals going by the highest serial number listed in the parts manual from 1958.
My Desoto is one of 275 made (SP25A-2 Diplomat Custom)
My Plymouth was one of 505 made (P25A-2 Cranbrook)
Obviously the upper model lines with overdrive and Powerflite transmissions are extremely rare.

Desoto
Diplomat Custom SP25A-2 serial #275 (standard transmission)
Diplomat Regent SP25A-3 serial #84 (Automatic overdrive)
Diplomat Plaza SP25A-4 serial #28 (Powerflite automatic)
total for Desoto 387

Dodge
Kingsway Custom D49A-2 serial #501 (standard transmission)
Kingsway Crusader D49A-3 serial #122 (Automatic overdrive)
Kingsway Coronet D49A-4 serial #29 (Powerflite automatic)
total for Dodge 652

Plymouth
Cranbrook P25A-2 serial #505 (standard transmission)
Savoy P25A-3 serial #122 (Automatic overdrive)
Belvedere P25A-4 serial #49 (Powerflite automatic)
total for Plymouth 676

I still don't understand why Chrysler never made them here till the 80s Dodge Rampage.
The Chrysler AP series proved it would work with fins and look great also.

The ones with the 59 Desoto look are the AP3 series made approx 61-62
The 56 Plymouth styled fins were on the AP1 series approx 57-59 (these had forward Look insignia hubcaps)
The AP2 series had fins similar to 58 Dodge and was made approx 59-61 but they did not make a UTE.
Note that the cabin area on all three series are still 53-54 Plymouth based.

yes the dash did change. let me find some photos.
Only found a AP1 dash photo, the floor shifter is of course added later and is mated to a Hemi 6 cylinder
