Not a close ratio transmission. second to third is a large RPM drop.

Why the "A" designation? I always thought that the "A" stood for automatic, as in A727.

Now that is a good question....likely with no discernable answer.....
We might surmise that 'A' does not indicate 'automatic', just something that 'they' thought was needed.
'A' being at the front of the alphabet and 'T' (as in T-10) stuck in the back may have been just a marketing ploy.
MaMopar did sell a handful of 62 RB cars with the T10 but the trans was too weak for the torque monsters and a new design was born.
Now I wonder why Borg Warner uses 'T' ?

The "T" in borg warner rigs stands for Transmission - then the ammount of speeds. Aka T-5, T-4 , etc . After they were bought up by tremec they kept the old naming convention for the old parts.

Mopar also used the T-10 in their 63 models. I have always wondered why you could get only the T-85 3 speed (used as the design basis for the T-10) behind the 62-63 max wedges if you wanted a manual but not the T-10 which was equally as strong. As was previously mentioned not strong enough.

The transmission in this setup is a late A body A-833 overdrive from a feather duster. That is why it has the shorty tail housing. I have the same setup in my 1960 Plymouth, but the trans came out of an early 1980s pickup. It has a long, cast iron tail housing but the main body is still aluminum. There are a lot of versions of this transmission, check out brewers performance if you would like to learn more.

The over drive does have a pretty large gear ratio jump between 1st and 2nd, but that doesn't bother me as I'm not racing. The little hemi and the 318 poly should both have plenty of grunt to handle the drop in RPMs. After all, the old slant six could do the job as well.
