thanks!

Slow but steady progress. The axle is installed and completed, finished the brake lines, brakes and drums. The rims sandblasted painted and ready to go, I have 5 new tires and I ordered the portawalls . I also purchased all the new U-joints.
I can’t wait to drop the body back on the frame!!

Wasn't the Imperial motto "The most carefully assembled cars in America" ?

When new, and evidently again. Really nice work you are doing there.

Can't wait to see her.

When you get the tires and portawalls mounted and balanced . If the tire store offers Nitrogen for your tires take it.
With Nitorgen in the tires they last longer, You get better fuel economy, the tires stay cooler , The tire pressure stays the same.
It will be worth it . I have nitrogen in the tires of my 1961 fury .

thanks! guys. Wells that motto was later in the 60s I guess, the 57 was the begining of the bad quality years.
I will check the Nitrogen, thanks!!!

You have done a remarkable job with much attention to detail. I enjoy watching your progress as I am behind you in the process and you have given me many ideas about how to not only make it run and operate well but also look good for many years? This is a great lesson in FL car building. Thanks Denis. Keep the pictures coming?

With only 3 sunny days in June, July came a bit wet too but finally the frame was completed.
Power steering was resealed, cleaned and painted.

I also recovered my center carrier insulator which was a bit tired. But new reinforce, bearing and paint look good to go.

Does that mirror the original rubber carrier or is it something you came up with. If it's a mirror of the original, then ignore the rest of this post..... Its looks very stiff. The reason I ask is that I had a chevy s-10 long bed that had a 2 piece driveshaft with a center carrier. I thought I would "tighten" things up. Looking at the factory rubber for the center carrier it was sort of a spider, fingers of rubber with a lot of open space between them formed the rubber cushion. You could push on the driveshaft and see movement of the rubber spider as the fingers compressed slightly. I figured I would take out that "play" and put some shims in the mount so the spider was compressed slightly making it less able to be "pushed around". Next time I drove the truck there was a whole new vibration. That spider "adjustment" was the only thing I changed. I took the shims back out and the vibration went away. So I just mention this in case you get this thing back together and have a vibration you can't figure out. It could be that very stiff looking mount for the center bearing. Or it could be the vise grips you forgot to remove that are now resting on the turning driveshaft - another little incident I'd like to forget....

It is the original, the rubber was coming apart from metal, I just "sandwich" the 3 pieces again with 8 bolts to keep them together for a bit longer, no too tight just back together.
Yes the rubber had some spider webs cracks too, but the bolts reinforce help them a bit. I painted everything with a paint which is very flexible, and can protect the rubber from the elements.
But I know this is only a temporary solution, and I appreciate your advice. Thanks!!!

Getting there Dennis.

Here is a link to a drive shaft kit. This is the same as the one from my 60.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Driveshaft-Center-Bearing-U-Joint-Set-fo...

Looks like the one you repaired is for an Imperial convertible (maybe 1960?). I wonder if the 57 were the same as the later conv's?

I manufactured one by modifying another type. You can see a photo or two of it here.

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=31214&...

I got the idea to make one from the OIC, that and the fact that I could not find a replacement 2 years ago.

Steve.

Thanks for the info, kit looks complete. Your conversion look awesome.

Ok, great day for the Imperial the frame and body are back together, with steering column and the new wheels.
I also have most of the front clip sandblasted and painted. Project moving good with the good weather.

Another great day, after 7 years in storage the imperial came out to the sunlight and went straight to the sandblaster. The process revealed rusted parts that need to be fixed, but good overall later in the day I applied 2 coat of rust converter to the floor pans and undercarriage. Monday will be the time to deliver the car the my sheet metal guy. More pictures later.

nice so far! any update? And a question for anyone that knows. Seems there are 2 types of frames for these cars. One with an X type cross member set up and the other with conventional type as seen in this thread. What is the deal with that?

The X type cross member was used on convertibles and the 4 door hardtops to reduce body flex.

Those brake lines might be the new nickel copper brake lines that are dot approved now.
Used in europe and corrosion resistant

Cooper is very flexible and forgiven to vibrations, stress and rust. Is far superior to steel lines, I don't understand why it would be a bad material...

Copper is a soft (weak) material and has a low burst pressure tolerance and will also crack easily, especially at flex points (between the frame and the body and at the junctions for the rubber hoses)

The steel lines have a copper aspect to them (its an alloy) that makes the easy (not as easy as strait copper though) to bend and gives the flares in the pipe good sealing characteristics, but again, not quite as good as copper

I would not use copper myself and it would not pass road worthy inspections here in Australia

Sorry

I see, well in Argentina they only sell those tubings, walls are very thick and the same used for HVAC. It was not my choice for sure, the material and tools to repair cars is very limited overseas.

Denis, does your (soon-to-be...) ride have A/C in it?

IMO, 'all' 4-door cars should have A/C installed in them, because they are convenient to accommodate multiple
passengers, in great comfort....and 'we' want our multiple-rider cars to have COMFORTABLE passengers, when we go 'out' to dinner or, otherwise, socialize with our riding-guests.

The 4-doors are 'made' for riding comfort.

In the 2-door models, it's every rear-passenger for himself!
