I have bought Jeff's (Resurrector) 1958 Dodge Regent Sport Coupe last August, and haven't posted about it in the proper "member's rides" section yet. So today's the day, and the beautiful fall colours in my area are a perfect pretext for a picture introduction.

I have created an album in the Albums section of this forum, to post more pics of the car, and to eventually post pics of the restoration work I'll be doing to it, as time, budget and parts availability allow.

What are the proper wheelcovers for a Regent ... the ones in the top photos, or the ones in the
bottom ? I sure like the look of the ones in the bottom photos better. The uppers look like a 71
Pontiac or similar ... not real 50's looking.

Hi
The ones in the Bottom photos are correct for a Canadian built Dodge, the ones in the Upper photos are Canadian '58 Plymouth wheel covers ....I know I own one thats completely original.

Exactly!!

I had here a nice set of the canadian 58 Plymouth wheel covers and put them on it when I got the car, but I went back to the original Dodge wheel covers after a couple of weeks. The Dodge wheel covers will remain.

Grunau, I'd love to see pics of your Plymouth!

Beautiful car! Maybe the nicest Plodge I ever spotted on the web. Magnifique!!!

Why does she have the rear view mirror in the middle of the dash, like a 1957? Did Chrysler Canada use leftover stock from the last year?

When will you start the Christine clone conversion ?

As soon as you finish putting a floor shifter in your DeSoto!...

...Oh, wait. You ARE going to put a floor shifter in your DeSoto!!

Seriously, though, I like Christines as much as the other guy, but this car will eventually go back to original in green and yellow, with black and white interior, Savoy sportone and Dodge front clip and script and as such, is as much un-Christine as a car with this body-style can be, and it will remain so for as long as it belongs to me. Just my personal taste and the opinion that a rare car like this (around 1600 made and not many left) should be preserved as the unique Canadian oddity it is.

The 57 rearview mirror is not original and was installed by the former owner.

As soon as I find the three dash edge moldings to replace the ones damaged by the 57 mirror, I'll put the mirror back in its original 58 location, on the dash.

Being a Canuck, the novelty of the unique Canadian hybrid model has to be special. Although
I must say this attitude was not the case in the 80's and 90's, .... at least in western Canada.
Back then, it was all about max bling and those guys were all bugging me for U.S. models and
talking trash about the Canuck cars.

Your car is exceptional in having a nice level of flash, yet being a little conservative with the
green color. Smartly understated.

I find the more upright angle of the front fender forward lean to be odd looking, but I am used
to the Plymouth nose.

I love my ugly green sedan for being the anti-Christine. Flash has it's place (I have a DeSoto
for that), but I like the quaint charm of the green and lack of accent color. Like you guys, mine
remain about as dead stock as I can make it. My only mod was to remove the back up light
"billboard" and finish the valance to match. O/W, it will look as if the Forest Service just took
delivery of their new fleet of 58 Plymouths.

I lived in Vancouver in the 80's...never heard any trash talk about the Canadian models coming from myself or from anyone else.

Soiouz - do you ever make it to any shows or events in the northern USA? I'm sure many of us would love to see your beautiful car in person some day.

We hope to make it to a few Canadian events some day in the future, so who knows, maybe we'll see ya there!

:)

I'm just old enough to remember some car shows from the 1980's and early 1990's and I have to say Doc is right. I remember very clearly people saying things like "it's nice, but it's just a Canadian car"... or "no one wants a Canadian model, it's best to use it for parts".. To be fair, though, that was also true of Meteors and Monarchs, for example, and the finned Mopars in general, canadian or not.

I've personaly witnessed the change of opinion about these cars in the last 12 years, max. Now, they've even become very popular and every event I go to, people come up to me and congratulate me on preserving such a rare car. People always tell me how they're glad to see one of these, as so few seem to have survived.

As for going to shows in the northern US, that's in the plans next summer, yes. I'll most probably go to Stowe, Vermont, amongst others.

I did a big chunk of my parts business with Canucks, and they were all there for the same reason,
they wanted U.S. model cars and parts. I guess the guys looking for Canadian model cars weren't
going to waste their time in the states looking for them, eh ? !!!

I never saw a change of attitude towards the export models until I joined this site .... about 2001 ?

Just sayin' - I myself, never heard any preference for "American" models over the "Canadian" models coming from Canadians during my travels. Not sure if I hung out with a completely different set of folks than did you guys, but that's the reality of my past experience, so not much I can do about it now. Just as one example, folks used to lust after my dad's old '64 Meteor way back in the day; he could've sold that car many times over. Still wish I had that car, darnitall, but it is long gone, unfortunately.

Soiouz, we are really going to try to get to more northern shows in the next year or two, so hopefully we will be able to get to meet up with you and your beautiful car some day soon!

LOL, Neil. Now that you mention it, I have seen the Christine tribute cars at shows in Canada...mysterious beasts...always popular with the crowds.
Hmmmm...Neil, I wonder how the Canadian Christines would do away with people? Maybe force them to learn the metric system?! Aughhhh!

I don't know why, and he must have really wanted to do it because it took a lot of effort to modify the moldings at the top edge of the dash, and plug the whole where the 58 mirror would be on the dash panel.. He's a member here so maybe he'll chime in to explain it. It must have been a simple matter of personnal taste, I guess.

You are right about so-called "Plodges" that were available in all the markets except the US. But Mayfair/Regent/Crusader were unique to Canada. Everywhere else, they were called Kingsway.

That's why I was saying that this Dodge Regent was a unique Canadian oddity.

Built at Lynch Road in Detroit, Evansville and (except 1955) Windsor for export all over the world, even Hawaii before it became a state.

First Plodge was in 1932 - Plymouth PB with a Dodge design front end by at Lynch Road. Next Plodge was the DT built at Windsor - Plymouth PE with the short Dodge DR front clip and end and instrument panel. 1935 brought the DV, built at Lynch Road and Windsor. The Kingsway name was adopted for 1946. Replaced by the Dodge Dart for 1960, built for export at Hamtramck and Windsor.

The Canadian Plodge came in two series from 1936 through 1941 while the US Plodge was in one series during that period, offering all Plymouth body styles, including 13 4-door convertibles in 1939.

That is a super looking Dodge.

Well done with your back to original restoration efforts.
If only Chrysler had sent these to Australia . We missed out on the coups here in Aussie. I have not heard or seen of any FL coups imported here back in the day.

She loves to ride in the old car too! In fact, the 58 is the only one of our cars the dog is not afraid to ride into.

Another update in the photo album, as I finally came 'round to restore and install original headliner panels in my car.

Here is my photo album: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?album...

The headliner is not perfect, as the panels I found were not perfect to start with, but it is way, way better than the glossy white roughly cut plastic panels that were in the car when I got it.

For good measure, I'll start with a "before" pic.
