Expert Posts: 3480 Location: Montreal, Canada | Title says it all. I need a steering column assembly for a 1958 Plymouth with Power Steering. No need for the gearbox, really just the column assembly. THANKS!

Expert Posts: 3480 Location: Montreal, Canada | Still needed. I need only the shaft itself, not the whole column assembly. Has to be from a Dodge or Plymouth with Power steering, mid-1958 or later.

There is also a brass shim that goes in there as well to ground the shaft so the horn will work. I am not thinking your shaft will be damaged just something not right?

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | The grounding brass strap ( which is nothing but thin brass shim stock) goes between the column jacket and the steering gear housing itself. It wraps both inside and out ( of course) on the rubber sleeve between the jacket and housing directly under the clamp that tightens it all together. Take time to sand these contact areas and perhaps smear them with dielectric grease. The ground is necessary for the horn to ground and work. Yes, David, I think both those pics are 57 stuff. Very different from 58. Hey, if you get stuck, send the shaft to me and I'll cut out whatever you say and weld it together for you. I don't know why the hell I'm offering, I haven't even started my own steering gear rebuild project!!! Greg

Expert Posts: 1737 Location: Hay Lakes, Alberta, Canada | David, I have a 58 Chrysler here, that has power steering...and the book says that the column should be the same, provided that you have the same type of power steering box as it has in it (two types are listed in the parts book). Can you post the picture of your steering box again? I think we had a discussion about it before... and you posted a pic. Also, if I had your cars serial number, I could see which box you have...guess you can look that up too. LOL!

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | We've already been that route, Brad. Guess what, the book is wrong! The Chrysler frame is about 1 1/2 " deeper than a dodge frame so the jacket and shaft are obviously the same amount shorter. I sent David the correct ( I think) jacket. BTW most 58 constant control gears will give serious problems unless they have been rebuilt. Find a reference to the dozens of technical bulletins on that topic!! Personally, I scrapped all my 58s in favour of 59s years ago. Greg

Expert Posts: 3480 Location: Montreal, Canada | Greg, I remember that offer of yours, and it still is in the plans. The only bug I have is that I'm not sure my own shaft is in good shape, so that is why i was still looking for one that I would be sure to be ok. But now that I have the jacket (Thanks!), I should stop thinking about it and just get it done. Ill let you know if I decide to get the column shortened. And the gear box in my car is definitely a 1958 constant control unit. Are the 1960 units very different too? Thanks for the info on the pics I posted. i ordered the correct rubber parts from Gary Goers too, but havent received anything from him yet.

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | As per all those tek bulletins, the inner parts are certainly different year to year but I think they all share the same outer castings. 58 and later. Greg
