Expert Posts: 2119 Location: atlanta | Well, here we go, this snow event will be apocalyptic for some people here, kinda like rain events in San Diego, people just go nuts. I'm sure the buying frenzy has begun at the local stores with runs on propane, water, bread, etc. As for me, I'm not worried, and i don't over react to these types of things, the snow will be gone the next day, but just in case I have my snowplow attached to the truck, have enough supplies to last six months in my emergency underground bunker, plenty of ammo, my own water purification system, 1000 gallons of gas in an underground tank, three generators, satellite communcation system, and just in case I have built a helipad on top of the house, with a TACAN and IFR/IRL beacons, oh, and three cyanide pills for me and the puppies! LOL I'm sure those in Ontario will get a kick outta this event. Edited by fenix 2014-01-27 12:26 PM

Met some great Aussies who really knew how to party! Got to enjoy a major lightning display one night; what a show! Got to feed the fish and the stingrays in the bay, attend a corroboree, and enjoy all of the other touristy things that there were to do. Even visited "Sweetheart" at the museum. . Expert Posts: 2119 Location: atlanta | OK, looks like maybe 1" so far, another 1/2" and the puppies and I will evacuate to the doomsday bunker, can't reach my family, starting to panic a lttle, I'm to young, to good looking and to much to live for to go this way, besides, i've got a six pack in the fridge, anyway, if ya'll never hear from me again, tell them when the blizzard is over, our bodies will be in the convertible on the carport, damm wish i had never let that top down!, oh, and just donate all the toilet paper, milk, and bread to a local charity, taking the beer with me. :-) Update 5:30 PM. Governor Deal just declared a state of emergency for the whole state of GA. unbelievable, people running out of gas at service stations, people abondoning cars and walking. WOW! Update 7:30 PM. Absolute chaos on the interstates around Atlanta, now the temp is 21 and the roads are frozen, people are trapped on the interstates and running out of gas, and when they try to exit, they can't get up the ramps to get to any side streets. I guess it is an emergency after all because this stuff will not thaw till late tomorrow if at all. My Y keeps reading her facebook, and all our ATL friends are reporting 3-6 hour drives home from work, schools with kids still in them (at 7:40 pm!!), and your basic mess. Macon is just now seeing snow, my kids are happy. If we don't loose power I'll be happy. But the forecast is showing a high of 60 on Thursday! Pete

Are you watching the local news? be safe and stay home temps dropping and it's gonna be hell in the morning when the roads are sheets of ice. Edited by fenix 2014-01-29 5:40 AM

Expert Posts: 2119 Location: atlanta | it's 5:30 AM, people have been sitting on the interstates all night, kids stranded in school buses, and staying overnight in schools, people abandoning cars, running out of gas and sleeping in service stations, WOW, what a mess. Everyone went about business as usual and then all tried to leave the city at the same time, side streets weren't even treated, emergency vehicles can't get to crash scenes, and ambulances can't get to hospitals. I know this is of little interest to most people, but it's most amazing how all this came together to create this chaos of a "perfect storm". Weather will not get to 34 degrees till about 3:00 this afternoon and then back down in the teens again tonight.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1172 Location: Georgia | I turned the news off last night about 11pm. Amazing. The entire ATL closed at the same time, plugging the entire city. What an absolute mess. It still baffles me that the ATL schools didn't close until noon. Most Macon schools were closed all day yesterday and today, although the sleet/snow didn't start falling here until late afternoon. Expert Posts: 2119 Location: atlanta | It's on the news, cnn and fox, people are pretty irate, especially about the kids and schools. Of course nobody's taking any responsibility. I haven't moved since Monday afternoon, did my running around because I was here in 2011, same situation except I had to go pull the EXGF out. and it was pretty slippery then cause nobody had any idea about treating the roads, it didn't get above freezing for several days and everyone was miserable. Expert Posts: 2119 Location: atlanta | But they didn't, some kids were trapped on stranded school buses overnight, that's total BS, they had national Guard and GEMA trucks as well anything they could find to get those kids of the buses, but sadly some kids still didn't get home till the next day. As of now, looks like the GEMA director's heads expendable, they need a multi baled guillotine for these clowns.

Location: Parts Unknown | Is it just me who got the message that every day is a mission, and every day people get dead. My job is to complete the mission and get as few of my people dead in the process. Run every day's tasks and plans through that "filter" and this stuff doesn't happen. Inconvenient, yes. Disaster, no. Just deal with it. Tomorrow's mission may be a real hell raiser. BTW - I've had this much snow and ice on the ground now for a month. It was late in coming this year. It usually starts around 01 November. Lack of preparedness does not a disaster make. This was ALL of Atlanta's responsibility to not get caught with their pants down around their ankles, not the gov'ts job to DO SOMETHING about it !

Expert Posts: 2119 Location: atlanta | No, but taxes are paid so gevernment can treat roads and make them passable, that official's generous saleries and retirement accounts are earned by JUST doing their jobs, and we are talking three inches at most. In any other city that is even occasionally used to snow it would be a just another day. I don't completely blame the city/state officals, more like a 65/35 split against the powers that WERN'T there for the people. Disaster? no, emergency? yes. Doc, don't know ya, but i'm sure you more experienced, educated, and possess a fair amount of common sense to know everyone does not view their daily routine as a "mission", unless you consider making sure the DVR is set for the Jerry Springer show as mission, for most the only thing that the word "mission" triggers is a hankering for tacos. I would venture to say many don't even have a daily plan, unless making it to five o'clock counts, much less thinking about leaving the house with a full tank of gas, water, blanket, first aid kit, etc. As Collective Soul, the soothsayer's extrodinaire of Stockbridge Ga. sang: "It's the World I Know"

Location: Parts Unknown | Hints, Lies, and Allegations ..... Good stuff, that CS ! The world I know is heavily laden with lazy-assed muthafukkas whose only concerns in life are getting inebriated and getting laid, with ZERO sense of personal responsibility for all that reality may bring. Now, I don't really have an issue with this, as it is outside my scope of power to do anything about. Where I DO have a problem with it is when these same persons feel they have the right to b!tch about what comes their way as a result of their own choices as it regards intelligence intake, processing, and preparedness. Do we have the right to think "tacos" when the subject of "mission" comes up ? Sure ! Do we get to blame others for our "emergencies" that result from being on a taco mission when the intel clearly indicated a need to beef up for a snow situation ? Absolutely not. It is not Govt's job to kiss our sorry little self-indulgent asses every time we spill coffee or discover the creek's too high. There wasn't a soul in this country who did not have ample warning that Georgia was gonna get some snow. I am on the very other side of the country and rather buried in my own "business" and I knew about it. WTF ? ! Allow those who make choices to reap the benefits of those choices, good or bad, and lose the attitude that someone else must be responsible !

Location: Parts Unknown | Last week I pulled the trigger on some new winter tires for the truck. My old ones have plenty of tread, but were getting a little slippery on the polished ice. Picked up an extra set of stock rims for easy swap out and will use the old ones for non-snow/ice months and squeeze a lot more miles out of these new ones. Glad I did, because we've been getting steady snow since 2 days after. Today we got about 8" and I finally had to go full shammy on the street cleanout and sidewalks, etc. with the snowblower. There is a perverse pleasure in clearing snow and snow driving, if you're prepared. The neighbors had 5' banks along their driveway from clearing it. The old snowblower made short work of those banks, pitching the snow back another 20' across their lawn.

I have read some comments elsewhere where northeners are laughing at us here around Atlanta about being p***y's, and how they can handle 15 inches of snow, and how 3 inches of snow is called July in Vermont, we aren't talking snow here, we're talking and inch of ice covered everything, this will be hell, and not just here up the carolina's. I post if anyone's interested, but the power WILL go off at some time. I'm hunkered down, I have a bad feeling about my 61 vert on the carport,, there's atree that has alway's leaned, but I don't know if it can handle what's coming. will take pics and post if the power is up.
