Hola Yo'll

This started because of a person that has a 1959 Dodge and they would like to tow with it.

***********************

The Frame of a 1946 to ~ Any Division MoPar is already strong enough to structurally accept any 3,500 pound trailer load ( with brakes that
are on/ with the trailer ) --- as you know. Not a one of then need extra re-enforced plates or what ever added to the frame structure,
"to make it safe".

What is not said is that if one is pulling a Travel Trailer or any type of trailer is with any luggage - cooler's and etc can be placed in the trailer vs
trying to stuff them in the trunk.

It is hard to find Towing Data Sped's in 2014 for yester-year. Here is a link to some older AirStream RV Trailer Rallyes. Look at the Forward
Look cars used ... http://sierranevadaairstreams.org/memories/travelogues/772-harrison... . This is a 1967 link with C-Body
Factory Sales Information http: //www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/chrysler/tow/tow.html

As some of you read this you are going to be thinking, "I will never tow anything with my car". This may be true, but also think of using The
Hitch to hold a large umbrella to protect from the Rays of The Sun on a hot summer Day during a outing.

As a kid sitting in the back seat of the car on vacations, I could tell when a trailer caravan was on the road. Folks towing trailers doing 40 or 45 mph. Sometimes 10 or 15 trailers in a row. Dad would start cussing up a storm because he couldn't pass.

Of course, my boat & trailer only weighs around 1100 lbs. I have a little over 100 lbs toung weight. I bolted the tow hitch to existing holes on the rear cross member and welded a tab to the hitch that goes up behind the bumper. I then ran a 3/8" bolt through the bumper behind the licence. There is allready a hole there, just had to open it up a little. I would think this type of hitch should have around a 1500 lb limit.
Check out "The Big Trailer" with Lucille Ball and Ricky Ricardo. I think it was made around 1953-4. They towed a monster AirStream[?] up over the Rockys with[I believe it was] a new 6 cyl. Mercury[?]. Great movie and I read years ago that there were no gimicks, the car and trailer were real. You should have seen the hills and hairpin turns they had to negotiat.

Hola Yo'll

Here is some information on "The Long Long Trailer" movie and the vehicle.

The trailer used in the film is the 1953 36-foot Redman "New Moon" model, which sold for $5,345 at the time. The new car used to tow the trailer is a
1953 Mercury Monterey Convertible with a 125 HP flathead V8 engine.

Opening scenes were shot on Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Stage 12, the same location that Arnaz played his first film scene in Bataan, eleven years before.

The dangerous mountain highway featured is Whitney Portal Road, which leads up to Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. The
hairpin turn offers scenic views of the Owens Valley. During the scenes of Nicky and Tacy pulling their trailer in the mountains, their 1953 Mercury
Monterey convertible is replaced with a larger but similar appearing 1953 Lincoln Capri convertible. The distinct Lincoln grille is clearly evident in a shot
as the car rounds a curve. The more powerful Lincoln (which is equipped with a 205 HP V8 engine) was needed to pull the heavy New Moon trailer up
and over the steep grades of the Sierra Nevada where the scenes were filmed. Other scenes were shot on the Pines to Palms Scenic Byway
(State Route 74) in Palm Desert, California.

****
The Manually Operated 6 volt Trailer Brake Controller is made by Keyes-Hayes. In this era Keyes-Hayes units were "the state of art" and it was not until
their Patient's Expired that other makes could use their Tech Data.

The Vintage Airstream's shown in The Airstream Club link are all under 3,500 pounds if they have a single axle.

Thanks for the info on that movie. It has been many years since I saw it, so it was a little vague. It really is a great old flick and well worth watching.
Thanks again and HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

Hola Yo'll

When I originally asked about "Forward Look Towing" I had not gone through very much of The Ole Forward Look Photo's that was started --- way back when. Last night I spent
most of the evening looking at only 39 of the 181 pages of what I found out to be a very interesting thread. As I looked at the 39 pages I copied vehicles that have trailer's.

Here is a bunch "of them".

I want To Thank All that made this possible.

True - you are not towing any thing. I bet you did notice all those homes along the way had some type of camper parked to one side and some times you thought, " ... this would
really catch the eye if I was pulling that". You could of thought, " ...WoW - if I had that and stopped at a County - State or National Park and paid their $30 to $15 Fee - I could
save a few".

A lot of early trailers had short hitches. Makes me wonder how many times the fins hit the trailers on large turns! Good example of this would be a Spartanette almost every project I see had the same large dents on each side of the front.

Hola Yo'll

...Justin
As is - The "Finned" Boat will cause interest.

...Chuck
The Max Tongue Weight on all 1957 to 1963 AirStream Dual Axle Travel Trailers that are 22 feet long is 420 pounds. The single axle AirStream "Bambi"
Units of the same years have a Max Tongue Weight of 200 pounds.

Even if one does not ever have any interest in the camping or fishing part - there are now Picnic Tables - Sun Umbrellas - Cycle Carrier's and a whole
bunch more items that can be used if one has the 1 1/4 inch square tubed hitch. Every square tubed unit has a Max Towing Limit of 3,500 Pounds ( start
looking around and we can see 3,500 pounds is a lot of Camping Trailer ). The same 3,500 Towing Pounds is below The Max for all Forward Look Vehicle's
so there is still some long looong heavy trailer's waiting to be pulled.

If you have a Trailer Hitch you will never hear ..."Ugh - why that". You will learn to be knowledgeable of the subject because of the new friends that you
are going to be meeting.

The black Dodge truck with the camper top looks to be towing a Scotty Highlander, I haven't seen one with the roof air though. Great thread. I have a 61 Ply, it has a single bolt through the rear bumper and a 1 inch square tube under and behind the bumper, just thinking about what and how they towed with that scares me!

While we are on the subject of trailers...

One of our NDC members built what I think was a great little trailer for hauling items to and from car shows. The trailer had two hitches, and a swivel-type wheel that kept the trailer from accidentally hitting the rear of the car.

It worked great...well, that is until some idiot driver in a Dodge Ram King truck rear-ended the much beloved old car last summer. The trailer was rammed into the rear of the car, the gas tank caught on fire, and the elderly owners barely escaped the car prior to it exploding, a la Hollywood Movie Style.

Another great old car lost to the ages.

That would have to be one of the weirdest trailer ideas I have seen

So, having 2 hitches, it looks like 1 next to each bumper overider?

That set up looks like it would increase the tail swing of the car considerably

Personal thing I guess, but I wouldnt do it

Having the 2 hitches off centre would mean that that would be the only trailer you could tow as well

Hola Roger

It was not until 1967 that one can find one can find any type of data on MoPar Factory Trailer Hitch's ...http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/chrysler/tow/tow.html .
Do take note on The Cost and what was offered with The Tow Package.

I have nothing specific to back this up, but my suspicions from the time were that on a corporate level, Chrysler either hadn't "discovered" the RV market or chose to ignore it as far as cars were concerned. Prior to the introduction of trailer tow packages, there may have been some dealers who catered to RV/trailer types who knew enough to upfit the vehicles these people wanted to buy with the proper extra cooling, braking, tires and other equipment. Chrysler was dipping a tentative toe in the water building motor home chassis and had a certain amount of credibility and success particularly with the Travco units.

Hola Kevin

me thinks ... that due to some sort of "Marketing Research" - The Chrysler Corporation already knew what was coming from customer RV Travel Trailer Sales. Look at the movie The Border Incident made in 1949'ish and all The 1950 something Towing Photos that have 'showed up" since then.

The Brakes - Tyres - Cooling and etc part was already used with Government Contracts ( aka Patrol Cars and all ).

Oh yes, I agree that most of the trailer upgrades used on the mass market cars were parts that were already in the system and were effectively bolt-on. Found an excellent example of that when a friend took a front sway bar off of a '56 Imperial we were parting out and bolted it up to his '51 Plymouth 3p cpe. Coulda/shoulda swapped the front coils too, made it really handle well.

Here's a tow hitch on my '57 Windsor Town & Country wagon. Difficult to say if it's homemade or made by a contemporary aftermarket company. It looks like it could pull the Queen Mary.

Probably used to pull a big house trailer. There was '56 Packard I seen with a hitch attached and welded to the frame and bumper. Do you know if the previous owners were full timers? That was very popular then.

The movie was "The Long, Long Trailer". The car was a52 Mercury. There were no 6 cyl Mercury's. They were all V-8 until the early 60s.

Hola Yo'll

In "yester-year" folks did not correctly know " The Engineering Spec's" of what their car could tow ( the Truck People could find this information quickly ). What they did know was
"... it'll pull it's own weight". Armed with this information - this is how Tow Hitch's were made.

and --- as today, The Trailer Brake Controller was not on their "Safety Shopping List".
