Veteran Posts: 279 Location: Klein, TX | I read on another thread that 2-1/4" width is proper for the white wall. Before I spend big $$ for some radial diamond backs, I would appreciate the groups thoughts on the best width of tire e.g. 205 75 R14 or ???? Also, any thoughts on the white wall width. I have my steel wheels all ready for the new tires. (painted wheels 2 (10).jpg) Attachments ---------------- painted wheels 2 (10).jpg (62KB - 89 downloads)

Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Bill In 1957 "the black wall" was the most sold tire for any maker - their division's and etc --- in the world. The most sold tire in 1957 for your 122" wheel base car was the 7.50 x 14's. The 205 x 75 x 14 Radial Tires of today are a good diameter match that will keep The Speed-O indicating where it should and The Engine RPM's near where it has the best Torque for The Vehicle Speed's. Those guys look like little donuts on our cars. Had that size on my car, for its first set of radials...live and learn. Ask your shop for a diameter of the 205's; we need tires that are slightly bigger than 28" diameter. The closest metric size to our OEM bias ply 8 x 14" tires are P225/75R14

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Agree 205s are too small, and P225/75R14s are like hen teeth these days, except at the big buck antique vendors like Coker. I snagged a set of 4 new modern radials in P215/75R14 last year that were still in a warehouse, they are better than 205s, but still a tad small, so I may use 'em on my 64 Dodge 440, and get 15" Mopar steel wheels for 225/70R15 radials for the '58 Windsor... still available and affordable. Won't be able to use stock wheel covers though :-(

Veteran Posts: 117 Location: Kättilstorp Sweden | I use American Classic 235/75/14. I choosed 235 to get a little higher profile to get the speedometer more accurate . Magnus (DE_1959_41_02S.jpg) Attachments ---------------- DE_1959_41_02S.jpg (194KB - 96 downloads)

They've got them in 8.00x 14" size, but they don't say what the WWW width is. The tires are "American Classic" brand, I'd at least call them (and Diamondback Radials Co., for sure) to discuss WARRANTIES and availability, and pricing.

Veteran Posts: 279 Location: Klein, TX | I checked with Diamondback on the 235's. They said that they do not have access to that size at present, but hopefully by Jan. 2015, they will have that size available. Closest they have available now is 225 70 R14.
