What are you guys doing about the VIN tag when it's time for a restoration? These looks like hard to reproduce spot welds. But if you leave it in place, the paint/rust underneath doesn't get addressed.

The VIN plates literally pop right off from the dog-leg panels.

There are depressions left on the panels, so the VIN tags can be precisely re-positioned on the repainted panels.

Just use some sort of epoxy glue to attach it back onto the panel.

Agree. Pop off gently. Sand paint off spot welds on the body after paint, glue tag back on with 5-minute epoxy.

I would leave it on and just treat the rust around the plate. Here's why: The plate is made from thin aluminum. Trying to remove could bend or damage the plate. Also, if it's been removed and then reattached, it would appear like the plate's been switched. Could cause problems when you try to register or sell the car.

Just my 2 cents.

The plate is stainless steel isn't it? But, I wouldn't take it off unless there is rust behind it. Also, 5-minute epoxy doesn't have the strength that longer curing epoxies have. I would use a 24hr cure epoxy.

its stainless and you'd be extremely lucky to remove it without damage , its spot welded . if you're willing to take a chance , pull it . it just don't pop off like a snap button---------------------------------------------later

Yeah, my mistake. Still wouldn't remove it.

What a myth....tap it gently with a block of wood and it will fall off of the dog leg.

Glue it back on with some epoxy.

Here's some remonstrative photos on the subject.

First one/pair merely show that the VIN plate was installed after the dog leg panel was painted
(and, that the VIN plate can fall-off of the dog leg panel....

The second and third photos are of two VIN tags, with the 'second' one showing how easily that it
was removed from the dog leg panel, by using a 'pick'.

Note that the two holes that go through the VIN tags (AND through the dog leg)....have NOTHING
to do with how the VIN tag is attached to the dog leg, and how the arc-weld tip makes almost
no impression on the dog leg panel.

(Interestingly, in the second photo, you can see how corrosion is occurring behind the two 'holes'
through the VIN tag/dog-leg, and that 'this' VIN tag might well fall off of its dog-leg sometime in
the future, if that corrosion is allowed to continue).

The tag on my car came off fairly easily with a soft tap or two.

It might differ from car to car of course, but I think it should be easy enough if you take your time, and take a gentle approach?

Good luck!

FWIW, I just sent a stripped 56 Imperial to the scrap yard. Before it went though, I wanted to see how hard it was to remove the VIN tag. It turned out to be very difficult to remove and the center of the spot welds on the tag itself remained on the pillar. I am sure there was a lot of variability on the strength of these welds, but in this case there would be no way this tag could have fallen off.

The 57 tags fell off just like Neil and others said and 58 tags were larger but still came off easily.

I figured that I would give them the benefit of the doubt and carefully put multiple layers of masking tape over them because I sandblasted those kinds of areas at full line air pressure. When you try to take the tape off later ----- good luck!

before bertha headed for china , i removed the vin tag . it didn't just fall off and left dimples were it was spot welded . i used a thin blade stainless knife that i use for a box cutter . the top was the
worse part . inserting and prying back and forth till the top weld popped . the bottom popped after prying up a few times then a slight twist and pulling motion a few times . the car would have rotted
to the ground before it fell off on it's own ----------------------------------------------------later

"Headed for China"!!! Probably to make certified load chains out of the steel. A friend of mine just picked up his "pullin" tractor and snugged it down with NEW certified load chains and bear traps. He had to stop at least three times in 20 miles and retighten the chains as they stretched and loosened!!

Since the VIN tags were spot welded to the dogleg, does any actually know the purpose of the holes?

I have this issue with my Plymouth. Someday I would like the VIN plate to be removed but without damage. I have tried a bit, but no luck, don't want to do irreversible damage. The reason is I have some rust around the area that needs to be properly dealt with and the door check eyelet was damaged then repaired badly years back, I want it to look proper. One idea I had was to take 2 studs and using a very strong adhesive, apply them to the back side of plate. Leaving the original 2 holes untouched. Then drill 2 holes into the jamb area in the exact spot the studs would go through. Going back together, also apply butyl tape to the back side of the plate as an extra precaution.

Tap or pry it, with a small screw driver, or a pick.

It'll come right off.

Matt -

A stiff wire wheel on a drill should clean that area sufficiently. Then brush on some rust converter like the one made by Rustoleum.

Leave the tag where it is. If you try to pry it off, you run the risk of bending or damaging it, which gives the appearance that it's been tampered with.

Give me (not: the VIN tag...) a BREAK....

The VIN tag is physically attached to the painted dog-leg panel, by virtually NOTHING.

Give it a gentle, lateral, tap, or a pry, and watch it fall away from the dog-leg.

Then, when you're ready to reinstall it; rough up its back-side, to give it some decent surface area, and epoxy it back into 'place'.

[It's not like you're trying to peel off "Mylar" from a door panel..lolol...]
