Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Honestly, I'm not too concerned about issues with compression plug for my drain hole if it were as simple as that. Unfortunately, the drain bolt is almost touching the drag link and slightly hits the aftermarket compression plug. I'm not happy with that, so I will fix or replace the pan. Not sure if its worth it to buy another used/new one or just repair mine. Mine is dented up some and a nice one would be great. Is it normal for the drain plug to be so close[1/2"] to the drag link that it will not come out unless you turn the wheels or is the pan bent? So, what years, models, eng. size pans can I use for correct clearence?

Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Come on, didn't any of you ever change your oil? I may try to repair this pan but I'd like to know if that drain plug is supposed to be that close to the center link? Again, my plug is so close that it can not be removed without turing the wheel to get the drag link a littel out of the way. Maybe I have the wrong pan?

Expert Posts: 3393 Location: Chestertown, NY ( near Lake George) | My 59 Dodge 326 has plenty of room to the drain plug, I believe what you are experiencing is not normal on our cars. Someone with a 60 car should chime in here. Maybe the motor mounts are collapsed some causing the engine to drop?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | I was thinking about why yours would be close to the drag link, and all I can think is maybe you have the engine mounts bolted on wrong? They bolt to the back side of the bosses on the block and the front bolt hole on the sub frame, any other way will set you engine back. Measuring from the back edge of the L/H head to a flat bit of the firewall next to the water drain rubber thing, its about 5 1/4" on mine

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8947 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | not a problem unless the center link touches the plug during driving . i just changed the oem plug on my 318 poly to a new super magnetic one . if you had the old one to compare , to the newer one , you might see that it is taller than the oem one . i to had to turn the wheels to install , no big deal . without turning the wheels , it aint going to go in------------------------------------------------later this is the plug i used : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Magnetic-Oil-Drain-Plug-5-8-x-18-5-8-18-5-8... Member Posts: 9 | I HAVE SAME PROBLEM ! on MY 1960 Plymouth 2dr hdtp with original poly 318. Hard to get wrench on. I work @ NAPA as ASE certified parts pro. And the drain plug listed in catalogs is wrong. Memory serves me its about 7/8 Dia and 1-1/8" hex head. I can get you the correct number if you need it if yours is stripped. I must change out my motor, no oil pressure I think from a FOMOCO filter that came apart internally and blocked oil passages. No oil pressure. Pump worked shaft good, engine ran fine, not enough pressure to even put oil up tube to gauge. BTY have a 1960 4 dr for parts. No motor or trans.

Member Posts: 9 | For the record, I can't confirm this is the problem. I had heard of this happening previously to someone else with em. Got the car with Motorcraft FL1A on it. Haven't cut filter apart yet. Just so sick about ruined motor! Upon motor knock, removed pan, checked pump, checked shaft, (course it wouldn't run if distributor gear didn't turn) Bearings galled, deposits on crank. Not a regular driver, kinda a hash job by someone putting it together. I got it this way. Woulda junked it if was a 4dr. but 2dr hdtp. Have a 331 Firepower sitting next to it now - the plan. Car is 3 on the tree with sure grip rear end. And about that drain plug. Yup, 7/8" dia. 1-1/8" hex. head thickness with washer on it un-torqued .338 NAPA part number 7041933. I took a scraper to the RH front of the block and whata-ya know ! Silver paint under red valve covers, block stamped P31-027789. s**t. I really wanted to put in that nice cam & 2-4 brl setup I got 4 it. All black car with BIG FINS & I look so good in my bat man costume around Halloween in it.

Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | OK, so I am not alone with removing the plug issue? Apparently, just bad design? My pan is slightly dented at the bottom. I was just wondering if the dent caused the angle of the plug to be a little different? Guess I'll stay with this pan and weld in a new nut. I've been epoxing a magnet to the plug long before I saw them made that way. I also put magnets in the pan of my tranny when its down. I epoxy them in to be safe also. Wondering about the magnets inside a hard drive. Super strong magnets but do they last as magnets or do they break down.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8947 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | back when i had the bottom end of bertha built and went in to pick it up , the machinist said he almost repaired the dented oil pan bottom . i told him it was a good thing he didn't , cause it wasn't dented . to some it may look dented but not . it's made that way to drain more easily . not sayin you isn't dented though . those hard drive magnets are super strong . i have 2 on my workbench holding a scribe on one and a steel ruler on the other . inside the pans they should work great and they take up very little space -------------------------------------------later
