Next time I have trouble pulling a drum, can I borrow your puller? It sounds like a big mother!

when i get done with this taper bulls**t , you can buy it if you want , i have 2 , the other is probably twice as stout as the one i used . there will never ever be a tapered axle in any
car i ever own again . the one i used is doesn't have the impact bar , so i used an impact wrench on the hex head shaft , for a bit . then i went to an 18" ratchet , with a 26" cheater
pipe . for a while i thought it was goin to budge , yah right . it budged the stud right through the drum ----------------------------------------------later

There's another way... whack the studs back into the drum about 1/2".
Use hardwood if you want reuse them again, use the fisthammer if the studs can be trashed. They will be.
Maybe grind away the swedges around them first if they have them.

This will free up the drum from the hub which is now only held in place by the hubcenter.

so what you're saying is beat the studs in , that will release the drum . then simply remove the drum to get at the axle retaining bolts ????????????? ---------------------------------------later

And you could then use a grinder disc to split the remaining hub, if some body wanted the axle.

I know that they can be very resistant to get off Chuck, but you are the only one in the world that I heard that pulled a stud through the hub.

If you must do the cowboy stunt and beat in the studs for to free the drum, then you risk to beat the s**t out of the thrust washer - but there seems not to be any other options.....

Greg[/QUOTE

Chuck, I'm curious also. What did you do? Did you waste the rest of the studs and pull the axle, or did you throw in the towel and pull the whole tapered axle assembly and replace it with the non-tapered assembly on hand?

i haven't done anything but get pissed and put the wheel back on . the broken stud is still in the puller . what i will do is , beat the studs in to release the drum , then pull the axles . that won't happen
for a few days . the real reason i'm doing this , i'll post in the nether ------------------------------------------------later

I'm glad to hear others get pissed with some of this crap. A while ago, I suggested to grease the tapers before reassembly and a bunch of members on this site jumped on me for suggesting such a thing!! Yeah, right!

At one point, I pulled a truck load of drums off junkyard cars just for stock. I had a couple drums that turned nicely on a lathe and cleaned up with almost no "hot spots". But, they had damaged studs. I tried to pound them out because my machine shop had exact replacement ones and that didn't work. I pumped my arbor press until it started to make frightening sounds! So, I took them to my machine shop and they couldn't press them out! Let me know how you make out with phase two! It sure as he'll didn't work for me.

Maybe you have invented the best way to do this job! Pull the dam things right through the drum!

I'm a 57/58 guy so I don't know what Wiz means about a thrust washer but I have a bunch of axle shafts with the chamfer seats for the inner bearing crushed by pounding on the ends of the axle shafts.
