I was was taking a break from yard work yesterday morning and came in to serf the FL sites. When I saw this one in the "For Sale" section I started dialing know it would be gone. No answer from the seller after 3 calls and I assumed it was sold. The owner or relative finally called me back but was not to sure of the car then he said it was sold. I went ahead and left an offer thinking I missed another one. He mentioned something about his mother drove the car in college and it originally belonged to an uncle who bought it new in Wichita Falls,TX. An hour or so passed and he called back and they said they would sell it to me but I had to come now. I loaded up in my $200 Chevy van and my newly recovered stolen trailer and was Dallas bound. I hater leaving unorganized because it always bites me and this trip was NO different. Trailer ramps collapsed in the dark while loading. A $70.00 rollback bill and county sheriff at 1:30 am wanting to see all of my docs(he left me off with a warning for speeding) and falling asleep at the wheel($55.00 hotel bill). But if with ya want to play with the BIG dogs, i won't mention any names. LOL Enough of the dribble. Its time to see pics. Broadcast sheet was everywhere in pieces and this is all I've found of it. Is this a a D-500 car???

YUP; a Real Single-4 D500 model.

You can see that the P/T's do not confirm all of a car's options, but your P/T confirms both the quarter panel 'chevrons' and the
end-of-fin chromed inserts and the Radio/Heater Accessory Group: heater & radio, plus LT O.S. mirror, Day/Nite mirror, and back-up
lights.

You should very carefully tape-together (from behind it) the Broadcast Sheet, and then take it to an office supply-type store and have the
thing be laminated together, to preserve it.

Your P/T also confirms that your car's LT O.S. mirror is a REMOTELY-operated one.

What was it 'like', in finding, and removing, the B.-Sheet from behind the glove box?

Looks like the dashboard is finished in "black"....and, it is padded.

Its TRM code is for "Neutral", and not in the optional Custom Coronet motif.

But, it had OEM Spinner wheelcovers on it.

Axle is the 3.31:1 High Performance (2.93:1 was the Economy Standard ratio).

NICE!

Built o.o.a. 4/28/59, in Detroit.

Thanks Neil for your help in decoding. I had to tear the glove box to get the broadcast sheet. Parts of the BC sheet were littered around on the floor. I hope to find more of it. Fu..... mice/rats squirrels. This car smells. I have no keys so I removed the back seat and my HEART about stopped. Hub Caps, Yee High!!! All 4 of them. I'm in High Cotton Now. So I guess this is a true D-500??? So this axle was installed to make this baby move??? You asked for more and you shall receive.

Congrats again Dorsey! That is such a cool car and it's amazing you scooped it up before the deep pockets got to it!

PNT code 'PX3'

Seems like it should be 'PXP' for Coral - Pearl - Coral. Maybe the '3' just denotes the pattern that the first two colors should be applied?

The stainless steel wheelcover bases look to be in really good ccondition!

Especially in regards to the rusting around the rest of the body....the chromed spinners look to be really good, too.

No OEM undercoating on it.

The interior should have the rubber floor mats, and because the car lived in a humid environment, the 'good' news should be that those mats
(if they still exist) may still be soft and flexible....and otherwise Unobtanium.

I'm curious about the construction/finishing on those silver-looking, non-corroded rear body braces.

Yeah, your car got the optional rear gear...but, today ($4buk+ gas) the 2.93 ratio rules...

Danny; as far as the Dodge colors 'go' (or not!)...Red fades to Coral, and Coral (P) fades to pink.

In 1959, PX3 "Special Two Tone" decodes as Coral on the lower-and-fins, with "Pearl" on the roof and across the middle "Saddle" area.

It had carpet in it and it is original. If it isn't original somebody did a good job on faking the carpet.

Someone in Frisco,TX is mad that they were not able to buy the car and threatened the Grandson of the owner. I did not buy the car from the Grandson. I actually spoke with owner and he accepted my offer which was more than the Frisco,Tx offer. I drove over 5 hrs from Little Rock to Denton ,TX. Frisco.Tx is @ 25-31 miles from Denton. If this person lives that close why didn't they buy it yesterday morning???

Well, the good news/bad news is that your car's Broadcast Sheet shows no code under the option "358 Carpet".

That option-code would have provided for carpeting in a Coronet, that did not have the optional "Custom Coronet" interior in them.

The 'Custom Coronets' have carpeting in them, as part of that package----which included notched-backed seats and an extra amount
of Mylar trim on the door and quarter trim panels.

The TRM option-code, for the Neutral scheme in the Custom Coronets, is "948"....you've got "148".

Is its existing carpeting installed over the OEM rubber floor mats, or does it replace the rubber mats?

What kind and color is the driver's heel pad, and the carpeting, itself?

BTW, your ride had 5 (four were standard equipment) Rayon 7.50x14" Whitewall tires in/on it.

Rayon rode better, but wore out more quickly, than the Nylon tires, and, the 7.50 series tires provided good performance,
as has been shown and discussed on other threads on this website.

The guy in TX will probably never get-over his 'loss' of your car, and may well blame all kinds of future events on his being "cheated"
out of buying your car.

Nothing that you can do about his Mad-on...

It appears to be factory original carpet with the thick jute padding under it. I will look closer tomorrow and update about the carpet. Since the seats are trashed I am going to install and electric swivel seat out of a '59 Imperial. I will post pics tomorrow of the door and back seat panels. The first things I'm going to do is pull the plugs and fill cyl's with MMO. I don't know why but the fan is super close to the radiator and has rubbed the fins. I have an AAJ brake system and I think I'm going with front disc setup. First is to get it running then that will dictate my plan of action.

=========================================================

He threatened the grandson in what way ? Was it promised to this other guy ?

Disirregardlessly, cash talks and if this clown really wanted it, he should have beat
feet over there and made it happen.

Threatening someone over one's own failure to act is pretty cheesy.

Something about he had bought it. I thought to have a contract there must be some kind of consideration($$$) exchanged. I don't want this thread to turn into some BS. I will post more pics and info tomorrow. This car is far from perfect with all the rust but I'm happy. Trunk and floor pan pics tomorrow.

59 Dodge 2 door hardtops are a lot of things, but not really ugly. Super cool unique design. Now a 61 dodge........
If you want ugly take a look at the 59 hearse in the "" ebay and other finds" catecory.

Neil, the pics show factory carpet but it was installed over the factory mat. I new something was fishy when some of the seat hold down nuts were missing. I'm not too old YET to crawl thru the back seat opening 3 different times before I got the trunk open. Here are the latest pics of water damage. Will a '59 Plymouth trunk pan work in this '59 Dodge???

Shiv-ver (a cute way to avoid saying sh!t)...the floor mats are way-gone...but, the existing/remaining heel pad looks to be GOOD!

You (or the car's new owner, if you 'turn' it) can have your upholstery shop re-sew that heel pad into the new carpeting (since using the OEM
rubber mats are NLA).

Be sure to save some good remnant of the carpeting (like: around the heel pad), so that your shop can get/install that same style of material
when that time finally comes-around.

As your car is not undercoated, that is the remains of the OEM-lousy primer-sealer showing itself in the trunk area.

If you can remember to do this, when you get around to sweeping-out the remaining trash in the trunk, I'd appreciate seeing what the application
of the primer-sealer looked like, in the trunk area, and the undercoating that was applied to the inner-sides of the quarter panel.

Was/is there any evidence of that "mastic" being applied across the trunk floor???----or, just that primer/sealer 'stuff'?

I don't see any mastic on the filler tube or at the far end of the trunk.

A 59 PLY trunk and floors should 'drop' right into the car.

Nice shot of the remote mirror control.

The car's former drivers were BOTH left, and right-footed brakers.....but, they didn't spend a lot of time 'jumping' onto the accelerator pedal.

Actually, you should save the entire remnant of the front carpeting section, as it will show your upholstery shop how EASY
and simple that the necessary "blind-stitching" of its conformation really is.

Also, it will show them how little selvage-trim on its edges is needed.

In the rear section, the only selvage that is installed is at the corners, around the base of the arm rests.

Very simple, to re-create the OEM carpeting.

Ok, here the latest scoop. Trunk and drivers pans need replaced. I'll ask this question again. Will '59 plymouth pans interchange? The pics show that this is NO trailer queen. This might be the MLK car since this listening device was found under the seat.

...Said 'yes', above, but others can say the same thing, too...

Was there any (how much?) undercoating-mastic applied in the trunk area?

That thing looks more like DRAIN orifice...lololol...which the car really needed!

Dunno (obviously) when the carpeting was installed, but, the leaking-water stayed under the rubber floor
mats, quietly rusting thru the floor pans.

Rust never sleeps.

Trunk floors likely won't interchange. Floor pans...not sure, but in either case, it would be better to find floor and trunk pans from a 57-9 Dodge. Maybe Big M ?

That microphone was out of the OLD phone all of use to use. I vacuumed the car before I read your post Neil. I will see if I can figure out the sealing question. Well the inside is no longer a mystery so its on to the motor. Pulling plugs and filling Cyl's with MMO, pulling radiator and R and R heater hoses. Its time to spend some more $$$. This car has its fair share of rust just like the '59 4dr HT custom royal. However, I can't afford to buy and keep everyone that I find. We ALL are upgrading our fleet whether its 1 or 10. This 2dr HT is staying with me and I'm selling the '59 4dr HT. My understanding is that there were fewer 4dr HT made than the 2dr Ht. I will update as I get the motor running.

Gas tank is out. Tomorrow I'll clean it with muriatic acid and coat with WD40 to keep from flash rusting. Sending unit looks great and not clogged with dry fuel. I'll order a new sock as the parts store in Little Rock don't have them or even know what I'm talking about. When I give it to them they don't even know what it is. There was nothing in the tank, yea!!!

The 2 pics above are the inside of the tank. These next 2 are after Muriatic acid bath and car wash rinse. I added WD40 to keep the inside from flash rusting. 2 filters should catch anything I missed. I think it turned out pretty good. $15.00 for 2 gal of muriatic and @ $5.00 for WD40 + $2.50 car wash.

I see nothing wrong with the floors. It has the optional in motion cooling system. Keeps your feet cool, and if they sprung the extra for the trunk you never need to worry about your groceries going bad!

It's still somewhat porous, right?

BTW, your car's Broadcast Sheet is 'blank' under the Undercoating option-box (50_) , but, the area above the gas tank looks like it is undercoated, as does the area next to it.

Do you see any other evidence of undercoating being applied to the under-side of the floor pan?

What is also interesting is that the Undercoating option has only two initial-numbers on it (50) which indicates that that option would have
more than just one iteration/application of it...... (unlike the Gills and Chevrons, which have only 1-application/3-digit option codes)......so,
there would appear to be at least two different applications or versions of Undercoating on the 59 Dodges....which would be identified
by the (missing-) 3rd option code digit.

But, again, your car's coding indicates that it only has whatever-amount of mastic on it which was the standard-application onto all the 59 Dodges.

Maybe, by 1959, DOD/CHY realized that additional rust-proofing was necessary on all of their cars (altho your ride could have 'used' some MORE
protection on it).

That must have been another D-500 optional cooling feature. Those HP motors are always causing problems; tickets, loss of license, floor board holes. I guess I better sell this thing before it cost me a bunch of money.

Randy, that is an early version of the Flow Through Ventilation system, which was created to help cool off the
interior of Hot cars, like the D500's.

How is a rusty MoPar different from a Boat?

A boat is a hole in the WATER....into which you throw money.

Ok, here the latest scoop. Trunk and drivers pans need replaced. I'll ask this question again. Will '59 plymouth pans interchange? The pics show that this is NO trailer queen. This might be the MLK car since this listening device was found under the seat.

......

Not sure about 59 Plymouth trunk pans being the same as Dodge but I do know that a 58 Desoto Firesweep trunk pan is exactly the same as a 59 Dodge. I bought a reasonable one from a 58 Firesweep from John at Big M and had it sent down here. I guess that maybe 57 and 59 Desoto Firesweep would probably be the same ? . I recall John saying that Firesweeps shared the same frame as Dodge.

That might expand your searching avenues for a useable trunk pan.

Hope this helps,

Terry.

Thanks, Terry. I have a line on a couple of parts cars that I hope will give me what I need. I'm slowly picking at this new '59. The heat has finally arrived in Little Rock. However, highs in the mid 80's later this week.

I got an email from the previous owner with these 3 pics. He was a Texas State Trooper. I have asked for more pics of him and any of the cars that he drove on the force.

The trooper unit appears to be a 1973 Plymouth Fury.

Fantastic score, Dorsey!!

That (your) D500 got to be REALLY driven by its highway patrol officer-owner!

You KNOW that he regularly drove the wheels off of the car, because of the "professional courtesy" that was extended to all Lawn-
Enforcement Types back then (and today)....

He probably rarely looked into his car's rear view mirrors, and may have voluntarily engaged in "competitive exhibitions of speed"
at various times.

Ask him about any memories that he has, regarding his driving of the car!

Nice tires on it, too (thin-walls).

Ask him if he upgraded them, or made any other modifications to it.

I spoke with the trooper and his uncle that lived in Bowie ,Tx and sold the '59 to his son in 1977 for $200.00. The car was passed around to family members while they were attending college. The car was parked in 1998. The uncle claimed he had the '59 Dodge to 150mph with a grass hopper on the hood that never blew off. The trooper joined the force in 1970. The '73 Plymouth in the pic had a 400ci mtr and was faster than the '59 Dodge. The pics are from 1973 in Houston, TX.

Wellllll....with the "High Performance" 3.31 rear gear in the car, "150 MPH" is a bit of a stretch.

His memory may be faulty (like me remembering a couple conversations with Ronbo, at WPC national meets...when it wasn't he with whom
I had actually been speaking).....and he might be recalling his having pegged the 120 MPH speedometer in the car.

All I can say at this point is that it fired off. I now know that it runs. I will update info in a couple of days when I get everything put back together on it.

I replaced water hoses and installed aux. gas tank and it fires right up. The longer it idle the less noise it made . I just wanted to yard drive it but the trans does not engage in any gear. It was real low on trans. fluid but i topped it off but no go. I drive std transmission FL cars and this is really my 1st TF trans to diagnose. HELP!!!

If it was low, you might have to have a couple of goes filling it, but just sitting there with it idling and going from D to R (giving it a few seconds between shifts) might loosen it all up for you

Might not hurt to pull the pan and have a look though, the trans may have been the reason the car was parked up years ago?
