Hello all,

This is my first post and I'm also a newbie to the Forward Look cars. I've been in the automotive business my whole working life, primarily servicing vintage Mercedes-Benz automobiles, but also working on the likes of various other European Marques such as Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and Bentley. So yeah, I'm a bit more of a Euro gear head, but all the same, I'm ready to add a piece of Detroit iron to my stable and a '58 Fury has to be it.

I'm not a concours guy, I drive my cars, so I don't need anything perfect, nor do I want anything perfect, for that matter

If anyone has a candidate which they want to sell, please let me know. Not picky about color(s). Prefer auto over manual, and prefer an unmodified car. Some body needs are ok, although I'm not a bodyman so nothing rotten please, but I'll take something with several mechanical needs since that's my forté.

Feel free to email on QV5000@gmail.com or call me (513) 519-7302. I'm in Cincinnati and buying long distance is no problem. I buy most of my cars that way.

Regards,
Aaron

You understand that these are fairly rare models, just over 5000 58s made, a little over 7000 57s made. Expect to pay accordingly in any condition.

They came in one color: Buckskin Beige. They only came with Automatic transmissions. They came with 2 engines 318 dual quad, V800 and 350 Golden Commando. Oh and this red one. the only one known to exist.

"They only came with Automatic transmissions," WRONG. I'm sorry to have to point that out but 1957-58 Furys did NOT only come with automatic transmissions.

Hope you find a car, you might find it harder than you think! Those Furies are popular, and not many left. less and less available every day. I think they stopped making them some time ago

Keep us posted on you progress.

Over time, the buckskin beige tends to fade to bright red.

So the Canadian car is $20K. Not sure if that's high for a project car of questionable quality. I asked the seller for some additional, larger photos so we shall see what the result is. I guess I probably need to hop a flight and go see the car in person, although I'm not sure what specifics to look out for regarding the car itself as it seems to be a bit of a Frankenstein. Sure I can spot shoddy work on a Mercedes or a Jaguar but this might prove more difficult.

Will keep on it and report progress...

bergxu,

I'm a fan of the '58s, so nothing against them, but as a "Euro gear head", why not add something made in America with what many automotive historians refer to as "European styling"?
Something like the '53/'54 "Loewy Coupe" (designed by Virgil Exner) perhaps?
Personally I prefer the '56 Sky Hawk over the true "Loewy", but I don't think I've heard it referred to as "European" anywhere nearly as often as the "Loewy".

FwdLk56;

Well, to answer your question; because I've always owned British or German or Italian machinery so if I'm going to put some Detroit rolling stock in my stable, I don't want it to look European

Besides, I want something with some pop culture status and a Bandit Trans Am isn't gonna cut it

pop culture - so you're into the '58 Plymouth Fury 'only' because of the movie "Christine" ???
what next, a Plymouth Laser RS because of "Fast and Furious" ???
or a Dodge Daytona because of "The Wraith" ???

just messin', lol...

No, haha, I find the aesthetics quite attractive. It's between a '58 Fury or a '58 Eldorado, but yes, the Christine attraction does certainly give the car some instant recognition

Should get a caddy hearse, then you will have recognition

Actually, just about any finned wagon or hearse would do, a lot of people would think it was a ghost buster car anyway

Personally, I've never understood why folks go for a "pop culture" tie-in for their cars.
I love finned cars for so many reasons, hundreds of them, ain't none of them got anything to do with "Happy Days" 'pop culture'.

The way I've always seen it is that folks that know NOTHING about cars but "see them" in a movie are the types of "car guys" that go for "Back to the Future" DeLoreans, "Dukes of Hazzard" Dodge Chargers, "Bullitt" Dodge Chargers, "Fast and Furious" Dodge Chargers, "Knight Rider" Trans Ams, "Smoky and the Bandit" Trans Ams, "Bullitt" Mustangs, "Gone in 60 Seconds" Shelby GT500s, "Vanishing Point" Dodge Challengers, "Gunball Rally" Shelby Cobras, et cetera.

You either love CARS or you love pop culture.
The way I've always seen it is you can NOT love both.

It's like asking some of the Harley folks I know WHY they love Harleys and they DO NOT KNOW, they know NOTHING ELSE, they only know the "culture" and the "image" that lead them to Harley and are CLUELESS about any other motorcycle, NEVER looked at anything but a Harley.

Bel Air, GTO, Corvette owners seem to be the same way, they "like" the car only because it's what they "remember".
In '56, there were 1,570,000 Chevies *puked out* at the factory to 570,000 Plymouths, 241,000 Dodges, 128,000 Chryslers, 109,000 DeSotos, 70,000 Studebakers, 11,000 Packards.

I love CARS.
Don't give a rats pituitary about "pop culture" 'populism'

You'll find that most of us on this forum are the same way.

We loved the '58 Fury *before* there was ever a 'pop culture' "Christine" movie that featured it.
We loved "cool" *before* 'pop culture' made it "cool".

We love the movie "Christine", but that love is SECONDARY to our love for the Plymouth Fury.

Personally, I love some of the movie cars, Christine being one of them, Mad Max coupe,Elenor Mustang, Ecto 1 and especially the blown 57 chev from Running On Empty and (to some extent) the General Lee and the Dodge from Fast and Furious and others I cant think of right now

All of them (except maybe Ecto 1) were basically hoon or hooned cars that were raced through the streets as high horsepower muscle cars, but I wouldnt say I was into pop culture, but I wouldnt say no to any of those cars

Oh, and the minis from The (original) Italian Job were pretty cool and as much as I am not a VW fan, how could you hate Herbie

Thanks all. The purists here don't put me off--you have that in any automotive camp. I have a '54 Jag XK120 but I didn't buy it because of its role in any movies with Sophia Loren or Steve McQueen behind the wheel, same goes for my TR6 and my 308GTB--even though the Ferrari gets tons of annoying Magnum P.I. comments but I knew that would come with the territory, and I'm sure those with Christine knockoffs get the same but don't mind it since that's what they were going for. I don't think that many people will make the Christine association if I find a Buckskin Beige car, except for those who are 'in the know' about that movie. So yeah, the pop culture part of the car is a neat part of its history but it's not my main driver nor my singular reason for wanting one.

And to anyone who feels I'm not a real 'car guy' because I brought up the movie aspect of the Fury's past, I've owned my own shop for 12 years now and turn wrenches all day long and participate in many concours and SVRA events with my customers' cars all over the country so if that doesn't qualify me, this must be a tough crowd I guess!

I didn't intend to imply that, lol.
But yeah, reading back I see how my wording sounded like that

It was intended to the type of 'car guy' that doesn't know the difference between a Chevy 350 and a Mopar 350, a Ford 289 and a Studebaker 289 (figuratively, not literally, you could name two European engines that I don't know the difference between).
The type that owns a classic car ONLY because they have "money" burning a hole in their pocket and a "car" is a way to "show off" that they have "money".

I'm just ECSTATIC that you are adding AMERICAN iron to the stable and you chose MOPAR over some "everybody has one" make and model

oh, ps, I don't buy into the "buy American" (I have an "immense" 'hatred' for Harley, for example, but respect those that own one that KNOW what they have instead of building up some "image"), so I hold no ill-will due to the European models in your stable.

Lol, no offense taken. Believe me, in the Ferrari world, there are a TON of 'poseurs' with the money but not many with the know-how. In fact, any Ferrari of '70s or '80s vintage with a blown 2nd gear synchro was likely owned by one as they just bought the car for image and thrashed it like any other car. And of course, most, not all, but most guys who own modern European sports cars aren't true gearheads in the old sense of the word. They may appreciate the car for what it's capable of but Lord help us if they can figure out how to check the oil. Oh well though, just how times have changed.

Mind you, there are also guys like Jay Leno who are complete gear heads who also happen to have the money to have flash stuff. And many of my customers are that way--they'll turn wrenches on their 246 Dinos or Testarossas but bring them to me for the headache jobs

What kind of bugs me as far as the whole "pop culture" aspect goes is that now that "Christine 2" is in the making or wherever they are in the process of things is that I've heard a good half a dozen local "opportunists" ask if I know anybody with a '58 Fury for sale

That kind of "car interest" makes me sad
Like the only reason the "interest" is there is because they see "dollar signs" in selling when the movie is in theaters, like they're going to park it right at the movie theater with a for-sale sign in the window

I think you would find its a later engine, trans rear combo, so thats why the floor shift

No park position in the pre 62 (I think) trans, so the buttons are not a strait forward hookup

It looks good, but I would want a really good look at it, I can see the bottom of the rear quarters have been done (not a bad thing), but I would want to see how well they have been done (fully welded or tacked on)

Do you have a budget in mind for this?

You would spend another 30-40K undoing all the "personal taste" choices that were made i.e. door handles, nameplates, trim, paint, and the entire interior not to mention the mechanical not bring right. Better to spend on a real Fury that's closer to how you want it already.

I've heard it from a couple 20 year olds and a few 60/70 year olds.
I'm not a movie-goer and don't follow social media, so no clue where the rumors of a Christine 2 are coming from
Part of me hopes it is true... Part of me hopes it is NOT true...

Probably $20-30K total. I would approach the car with the mindset of using it and enjoying it for a while as-is, such as with the NJ car, and then would make changes I felt appropriate. I see that the hubcaps on the NJ car aren't Fury items--are those still available as repops? Who is the best company to buy parts for these cars from? I would like to get an idea of typical parts prices.

If it's more, it's more. As I said, I don't really know what parts cost, etc...but I can handle all of the mechanical labor myself so that saves quite a chunk of cash and, being in the car business, I have people for the bodywork and paint and upholstery. Remember, $30K goes much farther when spent "in the trade" than by retail customers.

On a 58 Plymouth , like the one in Canada , Rechromed Set of Bumper Wings will sell for Approx $3000, that NOT including the Bumpers. The Side Inserts And Chrome Trim are another Big $$$ item and can bring another $2000 for complete set up, So there is $5000

These 58s have a huge following , Hence they are Not Cheap , Especially a 2dr HT
