Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Just picked up this 1960 Desoto Adventurer 2 dr ht this weekend from LA. Was a Craigslist purchase., previous owner started the restoration and ran out of steam...had it 12 years...Most of drivetrain already rebuilt, motor, torqueflite trans are done...Has a boat load of new parts included in sale. Minimal rust located mostly on passenger floor, lower rear quarters and trunk...have all patch panels to fix. Came with new tires, all new parts for brakes, rebuilt radiator and a ton of other new parts..etc... Being put in the "deep freeze" until I get my '59 Sport Fury finished up enough to drive. Love the lines of the 60 Desotos...tons of trim to polish (ugg) and the bumpers are huge, specially the front one...luckily all the parts are present for the car., emblems (expensive if missing), all trim in excellent shape..original motor and trans. Interior is shot...so will need completely restored., but all in all a nice solid restoration project! Been following this car for a couple months on Craigs., and sent about 50 emails back and forth and finally purchased it...persistence prevails this time.!!! Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | big m - 2014-08-11 7:04 PM Nice score! I remember seeing the car on Craigslist several years ago, glad it went to a good home. ---John Hey John...thanks., I think I did really good., I added up $11K in new parts including the engine rebuild and trans rebuild. And there are boxes and boxes of new stuff, trim, mechanical parts etc...I remember I spent $3K alone from the machine shop for my 318 poly motor, another 1K for the engine rebuild parts...and I built it myself...so I am sure it would have been $5500 to rebuild my 318p. So the 383 probably cost at least as much. I am sure I will need a thing or two from you one of these days for it.!

I plan to post photos during the restoration and keep every body here posted. It also has PS,PB and added on AC. I had the AC taken out for the time being but it will be back in after the restoration.

I grew up riding in a Maroon Adventurer 4 dr and loved it until it's end in the early 70's by way of the rust worm. I was only 13 when my dad got rid of it and the Forward Look bug bite went deep. Enjoy!!!! John

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | My brother and my first car was a 60 DeSoto 4 door hard top that someone left at my dad's storage units, we fixed it up together and drove it last year of high school and college. Its kind of weird and I know you felt it with your car, but there was a mystical feeling that the old car put off that I still remember. And I still get it when I drag another one home. Like they are telling a story.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Well, I lied., was gonna put the '60 Desoto in "Deep Freeze"., and well., while I am waiting for my 59 Sport Fury Upholstery to be done...I can't sit home and twiddle my thumbs, right???.... Soooo....I already have the whole dash out and apart...all the parts are stripped and primed, ready to paint... The inner fender wells are out, stripped and primed and the radiator support and support brackets are all stripped, primed ready to paint!..haha...can't sit still! Already have a new gas tank for it., a nice pair of fender mirrors off "the bay" and new weatherstripping! I do have a question on the dash.....I am assuming the whole dash gets the same blue paint that the exterior color is suppose to be???...I am going to fill the dash pad holes and smooth out the dash...I think they look a lot better without the pads. (matter of taste) I guess. Cheers,. Guy

Expert Posts: 2519 Location: central Illinois | Pretty sure all 60 Desoto dashes are 2 toned. The dividing line is under the curved upper, where the dash pad used to be, and the flat where the glove box is. The side mounts are also the same darker color as the upper section. To sum up, the lower section from the horizontal slit on one side to the other is lighter color. The rest is the upper section and is a darker color. Pretty sure the sections that make up the "pods" where the gauges sit are a flat finish while the rest is gloss.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7206 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | So last night the FL server seemed to go out of service - when I tried to post my message above. It didn't respond, or so it seemed. SO I'll try again and load the photo of my 60 Adv. model in the same basic color scheme! Thanks for the good dash info....I painted my dash the same as the body color..the whole dash..cleaner looking then two tone...don't care if it's 100% correct. It came out gorgeous..did a base clear coat, then wet sanded and buffed it out..will post a picture soon. Edited by guyman 2014-09-22 1:37 AM

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | The quarter panels at the bottom in front of the rear wheels will have hiding/growing rust that will start to show up after you paint your car. This is a problem area on these cars. I highly suggest dealing with this area now even though it looks good. It sure sucks to see bubbles start showing up on a new paint job. Awesome job so far on your DeSoto. Glad you finally saw the light on cars ! I have an older brother that is into Fords, He has a 69 Torino with a 428 CJ, and a 68 Cougar. I have been giving him crap for a lot of years. Problem is he's losing the car bug and getting out of cars all together. When I was 17 I had the chance to buy a 71 Mach 1 that had a boss 429 in it and a 4 speed, not sure if the engine was original to the car, but it was a very clean car. Still kick myself for not getting that one, but 5,000 when I was 17 was not going to happen. Try finding a boss 429 nowadays.

Awesome job so far on your DeSoto. Glad you finally saw the light on cars ! Absolutely correct! Mine had only a couple little spots but when they were opened up, all kinds of rust! My body guy opened up the quarters from the wheel lip all the way to the rocker, blasted it, treated it and sealed it up. Made a new piece that exactly matches the original. The other spots most prone beside the trunk is the fender eyebrows and bottoms where they meet the rockers. That car is a pretty shade of blue and will look great when done.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Got the car pretty much striped, the bottom is finished, seam sealed and painted with black eggshell black single stage enamel. Rear quarter on passenger side is done, driver side cut out and patch panel in position to weld....coming alone nicely. Whoever had the car before on the back put about 10 pounds of bondo in the rear taillight panel...I took it all Out and body hammered the panel straight.... Now only a small skim in a few spots to make it nice again. I left the bottom holes for the large stainless pc. Thought it might add a little detail to the dash. Guy

The dash looks way better in person.....three coats of clear, then wet sand n buff.....turned out nice. Now I may have to redo my 59 SF dash...lol...it turned out nice too, but not as nice as this one did. Edited by guyman 2014-10-13 2:36 AM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 451 | Got the lower quarters finished, and the back of the car too. That metal is really thin back there....someone put a bucket of bondo on the back light panel....I took it all out and dollied out the metal and it popped back to it's original shape. Metal was in great shape, just full of bondo. So now the panel is straight and ready for primer and blocking.
