Location: McCleary WA | My '57 Dodge came with a model 918 search tune radio in a box. Looking at the factory service manual, p. 91, a separate "power unit" is shown for this radio. Can anybody tell me what its function is, and where I might find one? Also, is it possible to add a hidden ipod jack to one of these radios in order to have more choices than just AM radio? |

Location: Madison, Wisconsin | Darryl, Once you get the original AM radio working your simplest way of adding an ipod jack to the radio is with a "redirad" unit. I and several others on this forum have one and really like this solution. https://rediscoveradio.com/ |

I'm not intimately familiar with the model 918 but generally with two unit radios the part with the dial etc. is referred to as the radio head and contains the "tuner" portion of the radio along with the first few stages of the radio circuit such as the R.F.amp,Convertor & I.F. amp. The "Power Unit" has the final detector stages the audio driver and final Audio output amplifier. I would suggest you obtain the radio schematic to give you the factual story on the radio...
Try http://autoradioschematics.com/ its a nominal fee they charge but its worth it to get the info. As far as where to get the power unit ...you're into swap meets maybe a wrecking yard as radios were pulled from cars and sometimes stored separately if you can find a yard that still has this old inventory ...who knows maybe someone on this site....good luck |

It was not until The 1964 Production Year that Senior MoPar's had a FM Radio. If a 1964 Dodge Polara had A/C the only Radio Accessory was with The AM Radio.

Location: New Castle PA | The 919 has a separate power amplifier that (in the 1957 DeSoto, at least) hangs on a bracket attached to the firewall kind of behind the glovebox. You need that amplifier to make things work, and the cable from the radio plugs into the amplifier.
